Questions & Answers

How do you put this in when the damper handle is in the center of the fireplace. It's like 9 inches long.

Asked by: Tom
My husband carefully cut in the solid part to allow for the handle . The directions tell you where to cut.

Will it work for a 22in x 18in fireplace? Ordering for sister in Spain. Her chimney is 3 stories tall. Would this help?

Asked by: leena
Would probably work for that size by not inflating all the way. works well to stop down drafts.

HI My fireplace hole coming from the chimney is round and the damper opening is rectangular. Which product, round or rectangular would work best? Thanks..... tired of being cold all winter long
Asked by: Dave
The rectangular one would be best. Remember that it conforms to the opening since you be inflating it once it is in place so it will automatically conform.

The fireplace plug probably cut out 98% of any draft...very thick material but a little awkward on installation. You partially inflate (which is easy to do) and bend it into a "V" shape and then put it right before the damper. Then give it a couple more blows and expand it to the area. I didn't put a slit in mine. I have some glass doors/gas logs in my fireplace so you can't see anything. Make sure the area is fairly clean. Take a small broom and brush the area. I don't feel I got the ends to seal the very best, but it's good enough. Will attach pictures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works, very well I bought this product several years ago when they were first introduced at a Home Show. I have an older fireplace so purchased this style to fit the elongated Battic Door. (the round style is for the new fireplaces with the round battic doors) It was very easy to assemble and install (by myself, no helper). Just make sure you do not inflate it fully until you have it in place. (I go back every once in a while and make sure to check inflation, just like any balloon type product, it will lose air and I have used mine for several years now, only have to re inflate about once or twice a year if that). Immediately I noticed it stopped the constant whistling from the air being sucked out of the house. I don't even notice the product in place (I tucked the tube out of site), the stem is there to hold it in place and it is black. This is one of the products I use to help reduce my energy cost in an old house that used to be an energy drainer.

We don't use fireplace so this product helps block cold air. If we wanted to use fireplace seems easy to remove. Did not cut hole but stuffed plastic around chain and pillow in chimney. Really keeps room warmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product performed as advertised I found the Battic Plug online and installed it as soon as it arrived. I have severe heat loss in my cabin, with a very inefficient fireplace. We have had one of the coldest winters on record. The Battic Plug definitely is keeping the draft to a minimum, and keeping my inside stone wall much warmer. I monitor this constantly with an infrared heat sensor. Since I am the installer (smaller female), I recommend safety glasses, work gloves, and a work shirt -- because I needed to climb partway in the fireplace to tuck in the corners and sides of the plug, and I got debris in my eyes, plus sooty hands. Just didn't have the arm reach necessary inside my fireplace. I removed the plug for a fire on Sunday, and am glad to say it was even easier to reinstall on Monday.

It's still a little too soon for me to appropriately rate this product, which is why I've given it 4 stars and a "no" as far as recommending it. The instructions were easy to follow, and it was very easy to put together, though the "locking mechanism" seems like it could have been better made.. I guess the space above the fireplace is perhaps a bit narrower/smaller than this thing is/was designed for, so there was really no way for me to insert this in the "v" shape suggested by the instructions. (Looking back, maybe I should've tried a V along the long axis instead of the short axis, but I think that space is still too small.) Thus, I tried to follow the rest of the instructions, particularly fitting the "back" of the chimney as tightly as I could, then plugging the front and making sure the "handle"/stick was long enough to keep the thing propped in place. The plug seems to be stuffed in place, but only time will tell whether the leak is actually semi-resolved or not. I do need to have the fireplace fixed/repaired in some way, because the leak is bad enough to result in over a 15+ degree drop in temperature in that room relative to my thermostat. Wow! Even though I bought this a while ago, I only had the opportunity to install it over the holidays. Once I get my heating bill :-) I'll have a better idea how effective this is/was. It would also be nice to know whether/if this thing will need reinflating over time, especially because lower temperatures will probably make the plug seem less full of air.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not sure who designed this thing I purchased this thing hoping that it would help eliminate some of the odors from drafts coming from the fireplace during rainy days, which is usually due to colder air getting through the damper. Boy was I disappointed. This thing is awkward to install and doesn't really fit tight enough to keep drafts from getting around the edges. This is especially true if you have a handle on the damper, which most fireplaces do. The handle is positioned to one side when closed and it gets in the way of this thing. They've provided cutout slots in center of it to allow the handle to get through it, but who's damper handle is positioned in the middle of the chimney when closed? I'm an engineer and I bet I could come up with a better solution than this crazy idea. One good note is that it may provide some insulation, but if your going to build something you might as well build it right. This just isn't the answer for $50. Maybe $5.
