Questions & Answers

Hot Water Tank Vented To Chimney?

If I have a hot water tank that looks like it is vented to my chimney in the basement can I still use this product or will the exhaust from the hot water tank build up inside my house? I am not exactly sure how venting a hot water tank works.
Asked by: Mikej
In our case the hot water tank is not vented to the chimney. Product works very well in the chimney. Bob

The product does not work well in flues smaller than the dimensions because the bladder is made of material, when inflated, that pushes the plug out. If they made the bladder in smaller sizes or more flexible material, then perhaps it would work better. It does not help that the cost of materials could scarcely cost more than $2.00. I am evaluating other plugs now, I may return one of them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install - stopped the draft I purchased this after a home energy audit found that we were loosing heated / air conditioned air through a pretty significant draft in the chimney. It was very easy to install - we didn't follow the directions exactly because we didn't want the post to be visible, so we just stuck the partially inflated fireplace plug in the chimney and continued to inflate it until it stuck. It's been a few weeks and its has stayed up there without any problems. I have noticed that it has cut down on the draft from the chimney. I expect it will help lower our heating/air conditioning costs, but haven't had it long enough to notice an impact on our bills yet.

You could still hear wind loudly through chimney so I climbed on our roof and wrapped an old towel around and in the baffles of the chi vent then covered it in a trash bag (thick contractor bag with drawstring) and clinched drawstring then covered in a Weber round grill cover bag

My fireplace interior dimension is approximately 1 inch wider than width of insert. I filled the shortfall with styrofoam board cut to fit. Room temperature has been 5 to 8 degrees F warmer. Stopped cold draft and condensation issues.
