Hot Water Tank Vented To Chimney?

If I have a hot water tank that looks like it is vented to my chimney in the basement can I still use this product or will the exhaust from the hot water tank build up inside my house? I am not exactly sure how venting a hot water tank works.
Asked by: Mikej
In our case the hot water tank is not vented to the chimney. Product works very well in the chimney. Bob

16 in. x 40 in. Rectangular Fireplace Plug is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 250.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install - stopped the draft I purchased this after a home energy audit found that we were loosing heated / air conditioned air through a pretty significant draft in the chimney. It was very easy to install - we didn't follow the directions exactly because we didn't want the post to be visible, so we just stuck the partially inflated fireplace plug in the chimney and continued to inflate it until it stuck. It's been a few weeks and its has stayed up there without any problems. I have noticed that it has cut down on the draft from the chimney. I expect it will help lower our heating/air conditioning costs, but haven't had it long enough to notice an impact on our bills yet.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ok, but not worth it. This product is easy to inflate, but difficult to install and not as effective as I'd hoped. Another reviewer was right in that the material should be more elastic in order to form a better seal around the walls of the fireplace. It blocks most of the cold air coming in, but not all of it. It's bulky and hard to fit in the fireplace. It takes a while to get it in there just right. This might a be a cheaper alternative to installing a gas stove, but at $50 it's pricier than it should be. Still, there's not a lot else to choose from in this category. If you use your fireplace often, this isn't worth it. It's very troublesome to take in and out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product performed as advertised I found the Battic Plug online and installed it as soon as it arrived. I have severe heat loss in my cabin, with a very inefficient fireplace. We have had one of the coldest winters on record. The Battic Plug definitely is keeping the draft to a minimum, and keeping my inside stone wall much warmer. I monitor this constantly with an infrared heat sensor. Since I am the installer (smaller female), I recommend safety glasses, work gloves, and a work shirt -- because I needed to climb partway in the fireplace to tuck in the corners and sides of the plug, and I got debris in my eyes, plus sooty hands. Just didn't have the arm reach necessary inside my fireplace. I removed the plug for a fire on Sunday, and am glad to say it was even easier to reinstall on Monday.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A Dud It was a messy job as ash kept falling on my head and face. I would recommend wearing safety glasses. It took me several tries to get it positioned so it would stay. Certainly not a job I'd want to do if I was going to use my fireplace often. When a few weeks later I opened the fireplace doors to remove the balloon and start a fire, I found the balloon had deflated enough that it had fallen to the floor of the fireplace. I haven't tried putting it back it in; maybe I will try it again after the weather warms up for good. Maybe the frigid temps we had caused the balloon to contract enough to fall out; the air tube was still closed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It works, kinda sorta.... The balloon portion of the plug seems to really want a ledge to keep it sealed against the flue walls. I have two fireplaces, and in one the flue slopes up to the damper without any ledge where the slope to the damper begins. I found it nearly impossible to get a good seal in this fireplace. My other fire place has a slight ledge, and the balloon fits better. However, you do have to be willing to really get up into the fireplace to properly locate and seal the plug. It's not for doing in any kind of nice clothing. If you use the fireplace regularly, this product isn't going to help -- it's too much trouble to install

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could be great but . . . If our flue was not oversized, this would be a great product. But our opening is at the upper end of the dimensions of this plug and as you inflate the thing, it actually loses some of its length and width so that it is smaller than when it is deflated. As a result, there are gaps. I tried several deflations and repositions but just couldn't get it tight. Rather than return it, I decided to stuff some insulation into the gaps. We don't plan to take it in and out, so I won't need to go through this hassle again. It definitely cuts down on the draft and the escape of our heat. If it weren't for the sizing issue, I would give it 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product. Does What it Says. We've had the fireplace plug for a couple of months and it works. It's like a heavy, heavy duty balloon that stops air from coming in or going out of the chimney. Because it's black and sits up inside, you don't see it, however you can see the support rod that come down the back; a small price to pay. I just removed it easily (by twisting the inflation nozzle to let out the air) during this cold snap to start a fire. The only negative, was we had some difficulty figuring it out even with the instructions but once we got it, it was easy. And it seemed awfully expensive but if it holds up, it was definitely worth it.

After reading all over the board reviews I went ahead and purchased this item. My pre-fear was the installation as several had said it was difficult. It was a piece of cake albeit I did not have to cut a slit. Don't let the reviewers who claimed this was difficult to install deter you. It fits nice and snug and has eliminated the cold air draft, time will tell as to the energy financial savings I will incur but it's not about the money, it eliminated the draft. Have had it about a month December - January. Can't wait to see how it helps keep the cool air in during this Summer. Am completely pleased with the product, and it was delivered very quickly.
