Questions & Answers

Cable broke 1 year and 2 months after installing. Has the manufacturer come up with a solution?

Many people are having the same problem.
Asked by: Ron
Same thing. Cable mechanism broke on the one I had (old version cable connects on side). I knew when I bought it because I had a receipt for the tank bolts I replaced at the same time, but didn't have the fluidmaster receipt of course. Fluidmaster tech support sent me a replacement (new version cable connects on the top). Easy replacment as you can use your existing fluidmaster old version connections and pretty much click in the new one. There are few companies that stand by their products and customers like this. Will buy again, actually already have purchased another fluidmaster part for another toilet. Here is a youtube video that shows replacing out the old version with the new version: "Replacing the Duo Flush Valve" by "TheToilet Pro": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEEp0nUgdpU&t=4s

Does it work with any tank lever or just the one included in the kit?

Only works with the supplied lever system.

1) The toilet does not flush completely unless handle is held for a full flush. What needs to be done so handle does not have to be held? 2) Half Flush has to be set to 8 in order to flush. This seems to defeat the purpose of water conservation if it's almost set to the same as full flush. What can be done to improve on water conservation? Thanks.

I can't find a way to edit the comment I made on 02/09/19 so I'm adding this addendum.   The explanation I gave for why the tank dump valve stays open after the flush handle is pressed was speculation based on the fact that I took a Fluidmaster Duoflush unit apart and I couldn't find an air bladder.   A standard flapper dump valve contains an air bladder and it's the buoyancy of air trapped in the flapper that holds the valve open while the toilet tank drains.  I said the Fluidmaster held the drain valve open with force from water draining from the tank.   However, that was only a conclusion I jumped to when I couldn't find an air bladder in the Fluidmaster.   I failed to explain that I was only speculating about how it worked.   After I posted my previous comment, I looked at some of the Fluidmaster patents, which are on-line, and it appears that there actually is a buoyancy chamber in the Fluidmaster Duoflush, it's just not sealed up, or located in plain sight.  Apparently, in the case of the Fluidmaster Duoflush, the air bladder has been replaced by an open-top vessel that's hidden in the tall cylindrical tube and the open vessel takes the place of a submerged air bladder.      The important thing to take away from this addendum is that the answer I gave is still correct and these detail's about what holds the dump valve open when the tank drains are not important, unless you happen to be a purist.  The problem with having to hold down the flush handle to get a full flush is still due to having a low water level in the toilet tank, which in turn is due to the adjustment of the float on the tank's refill valve.   And, the solution to the problem is still to rotate the adjustment knob on the refill valve completely clockwise to get the tank to fill to the maximum level and that will make the need to hold down the handle to get a full flush go away.   I'm sure it's possible to optimize the water level in the tank and get the dual flush feature to work as advertised.  Fluidmaster does explain the entire adjustment process, assuming you're smart enough and patient enough to read and understand their instructions (I was neither).   I tried to get it to work as advertised, but I ran out of patience and gave up, so I can only tell you how I was able to adjust the Fluidmaster so I didn't need to stand there and hold down the handle until I got rid of all the solid waste in the toilet bowel.  If you want it to work exactly as advertised, then forget this and read all the instructions (I wish you luck).

I installed this 4 days ago. It was great for the first day. However, the Flapper doesn't seem to close a lot of the time, leaving the toilet running constantly. In a traditional toilet system, I could tweak the length of the chain to try to address this issue; but with this product that does not seem to be an option. Is there anything that can be done to address this?

Sorry can't answer this one out right. Do know answer is in installation directions. Remember twisting the body to adjust float levels. Sorry

Fluidmaster DuoFlush Complete Fill and Dual Flush Conversion System is rated 2.7 out of 5 by 581.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth the objects it doesn't flush In theory, this thing should save some money on water. In practice, it wastes twice as much water, due to having to flush 2-3 times to clear the bowl. Never knew I could get so upset over something as simple as a toilet. I don't believe this was made to work on non-low flow toilets, first of all. The tank never seems like it fully empties into the bowl, and especially with enough flow to work on clearing whatever's in the bowl. The stopper closes way earlier than the rubber stoppers ever did, which I believe is the cause of the problem. Even on the highest setting, the full flush just isn't enough. Seriously, if you're like me, and willing to give something a chance, even looking past a few bad reviews... save your money.. I'm not kidding... Especially if you don't have a low flow toilet. Next chance I get, I'm throwing it away, and installing a simple stopper flush kit that won't leave me lingering in the bathroom for 5-10 minutes longer, trying to get the bowl cleaned out with repetitive flushes and sailor lingo...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Broken.... Again Love the idea, hate the product. I installed my first one a little over a year ago. After about 10 months the cable broke and the unit was useless. To their credit the customer service sent me a replacement product within a week of calling with absolutely no hassle at all. The replacement literally took less than five minutes and I was back to half-flushing like a boss. That was about 2 months ago and the cable just snapped again. I am done with this product. To be fair, I never had any problems at all with leaking. Besides the cable snapping, there are at least 2 other problems. My kids (6,4) we're unable to put enough pressure on the cable to get it to flush either way (up or down). Problem 2 when pulling up for the half flush you very slowly loosen the piece that keeps the handle secured to the toilet bowl. After a few weeks you have to lift the kid and re-tighten it down. This should have been an easy thing to address during the design process. I am going to try a different brand and see what happens.

I really like the idea of this product, but after updating all my toilets to this and then having to do maintenance replacement on two units so far my conclusion is that the concept does not work at this price point. It would be better to increase the cost and have a higher quality product - that would provide more value. Issues to date: - the cable from the flush lever breaks after 1-2years at the lever. It looks internally like an aluminum wire and attached with a crimped end, similar to the end of a bicycle brake cable. It has broken at the crimp twice for me. - the product is being updated constantly - may be an attempt to both cost reduce and improve functionality - the latest lever attachment does not stay put and moves when you flush making it non-effective. I have solved the issue by using a zip tie - see pictures. Not sure if I will give Fluidmaster one more try when my third unit needs replacing again, or go with a more expensive brand right off. I will see how the reviews go when that time comes.

We bought 2 of these--one installed as the directions said, but the toilet runs and runs and the handle needs to be manually moved to neutral for the water to stop running. The other did not install according to the directions, the flush valve did not seal but we weren't able to remove it either, and we had to call a plumber. The plumber was confused by the "gadget" that we installed, could not remove the flush valve either, and long story short, we had to replace the whole toilet. I'm glad to have a new toilet, but this gadget did not solve ANY problems and cost me hundreds of dollars!! Not recommended...just call a plumber first and save yourself the aggravation.

Complete Fill and Dual Flush Conversion System,. This system is not complete. It requires a $15 flush valve if you have a Mansfield toilet like me. Instructions call out additional parts if you have a brass flush valve. How can it be complete when it is not? Thanks for wasting my time Fluidmaster. :( :( How can you cheap out and not incude the needed parts? You should get zero stars.

The problem is the flapper does not close without giggling the handle. It feels like the cable is caught on something. The water refill is slower than in the past so people leave the bathroom before the tank fills. The flapper remains open. My first mouths water bill was $86 compared to around $60 a mouth in the previous 24 mouths. I will replace the unit with another type of flush device.

I called tech support and they said "Sorry about that". They pointed out that there were toilets listed on the box that were not compatible but no mention of Kohler. Again "Sorry about that". Overall the whole experience was ridiculous or maybe Fluidmaster have not heard of Kohler. Not looking forward to the drive to Home Depot and the waste of my time to return it.

I ended up removing the fancy though non-functioning duo flash valve for the dual flush valve because it kept leaking water and thus every minute or so, keeps adding water to the tank to compensate for the leak. I think it has to do with the putty which did not seal properly. I was able to salvage the fill valve and will likely end up trashing the duo-flash valve.
