Q:If operating with 240 volts What does this inverter draw in Amps? Thank you
          by|Nov 2, 2022
          1 Answer
          Answer This Question

A:  The Forney Easy Weld 140MP (271) is only operable on 120V input power. If you plug this unit into 240V it will destroy the PCB inside the unit causing it to become inoperable. However, on 120V input the max amp draw is 25A with a running amperage of 13.7A. Thank you for your question.

VERY versitile and easy to use. A 120v 20a circuit works great and doesnt trip breakers. Easy to store and transport. Setup is VERY easy and instructions on the manual are VERY well written and easy to follow. BEST welder out there and better than HF welders. an EXCELLENT price for a Multi-Process (MP in model name - Do NOT confuse with "i" model!) welder that does stick, MIG (gassless), and TIG (with gas if you buy the additional TIG accessories) I would not use the included 20a to 15a converter thou as it seems really not well made. I used 12Ga Jcord (extension cord) and high end nema 5-15 male and nema 5-20 female sockets to make my own 1 foot converter. Also do NOT plug the welder into a GFCI outlet! It trips the GFCI constantly which is NOT a fault of the GFCI or welder as you should NEVER plug a welder into any GFCI.

Great for beginners to intermediates .. the 140MP multi-process Welder overall is an excellent product. It allows for MIG welding (with or without gas), Stick welding, and TIG welding. At 120-volts it can operate off most 20-amp circuits, with 30-amp being preferred according to the manufacturer. (In my case, I ran off a 20-amp circuit with a 3-foot 12-gauge extension with no problems.) Selection between processes is clearly marked on the machine and the plastic coated 1-page Quick-Start are superb (one for each process, and Spanish is provided as well.) To simulate a beginner, my test was simple: Build a foot-long steel box and attach it to a work trailer, it was needed to hold a spare tire bracket on the side of the trailer. The process used was MIG welding without gas (using flux core wire) on 1/8" steel. (I set the switch on the front panel to MIG.) All surfaces were cleared of paint as preparation. The goal: spot weld the two angle pieces together, then weld the new "box" to the frame at the top and bottom frame of the trailer. After feeding the wire in the welder according to very clear pictures and verbiage, I set the feeder tension to 2-1/2, as the recommendation was 2-3. Using the chart on the inner side of the wire feed area door, I set the two knobs on the front panel to the recommended setting for the material and wire. Follow the directions as to the connection point for the Ground and its companion wire (to the appropriate Plus and Minus front panel ports). Suit Up for safety (Leather apron, arm sleeve protection, welding gloves, and most important a helmet for eye protection.) NEVER skimp on safety. Suited for safety, the box was spot welded together with ease. The Forney performed as expected. On the last spot weld, the unit failed to arc and feed wire. Looking in the Trouble Shooting section, which was easy to follow, the difficulty was the wire feed tension was too high and had spider-webbed the wire inside the wire feed box on the welder. I redid the wire and reduced the tension to "2". The unit performed flawlessly for the entire remainder of the weld. Next, the box was clamped to the trailer and spot welded. The spot welds on the box side that was exposed was given a longer weld to cover the gap better. Finally, a longer weld was completed in each of the four connection points. Flux core welds are dirty and messy, as there is no gas to envelope the weld and give it a cleaner look. But, as a beginner, just get a wire brush and clean the area. (My photos give an over view of this project.) I did have to deal initially with Forney customer service since I received the wrong welder. They were friendly and professional. They went out of their way to get things right. MIG with flux core wire or Stick welding is a great way to start out (or deal with a problem where you don't have access to gas); next step up the ladder is to use gas for more professional welds. The Forney 140MP is ready when you are!

I am a beginner welder. Since this unit could do three types of welding, I thought I would give it a try. The unit unboxed and setup quickly and easily. There were instructions included for all forms of usage and are super easy to follow with step by step pictures. Wire is not included for gasless MIG and all the other usages require gas. I need to practice with feed speeds to get a feel for MIG but instantly got a good structural weld that could clean up easily with a grinding wheel. Lightweight unit that's plug in anywhere so great for small mobile jobs....up to 3/8" thickness metal. The internals seem like they are good quality and unit comes with backup pieces categorized as disposables (wearable parts that require replacement with use and time). Internals are pretty straight forward, easy to navigate and sturdy. The ran runs nice and quiet. Does not come with a TIG torch or pedal so if using for TIG there is some additional purchasing required for that but does have the MIG torch and stick weld unit. Switches between modes in minutes.
