Will this remove rust sediment in the water

Asked by Kim November 14, 2020

Yes, it will remove rust but that will decrease the life of the filter if it it significant. You should use a sediment filter to get the heaviest out first, then the GE filter to get contaminates that the sediment filter misses. Replacement sediment filters are much cheaper and will hold much more sediment before needing to be replaced. Most sediment filters are designed for whole house but should be easy to find adapters to convert for under sink use.

Will this filter operate installed in the inverted position?

These filters are designed to be used in an upright position as are all others I'm aware of. The design allows water to be delivered gravitation-ally and sediments to be collected in the bottom. Use in an inverted configuration will likely impede their performance.

Why does the water coming from the filter have a plastic like taste? I've flushed about 20 gallons and still taste the same.

sorry to hear that. I've been using these same filters for ten years now and I've never had a plastic taste. I normally get a slight bitter taste (maybe the charcoal filter) during the first few gallons out but it goes away each time and the water never has any taste at all. They been working very well for me.

I've had this GE Smartwater system for over 10 years
GE recently upgraded the filter cartridges, the old ones didn't remove BPA, I think, but these new ones do. I change both cartridges every six months, I write the date right on the filter in black felt tip marker so its easy to know when to replace. I know some rotate the cartridges, only installing one fresh cartridge at a time. I pipe the outlet of filter to my refrigerator's ice/water dispenser. The refrigerator has it's own filter, so in reality, all my potable water has been through three filters. Each box comes with the "white paper" specifying exactly what it filters out. I piped mine with soft copper tubing and compression fittings, its never leaked in ten years. Removing old and installing fresh filters can be difficult, once you change filters a couple of times it becomes easy. I like to think that the filters are protecting me from contaminants and it is comforting. Can be expensive, water quality is good without home filtration but its good to have just in case. I recommend.

It filters water, but how much varies from filter to filter. Sometimes they last three months, sometimes a month, and our water usage is pretty consistent. Even when new sometimes the flow is strong and sometimes weaker. They went dry once after three weeks and GE did not care and would not do anything for us. We had purchased it elsewhere and because it was more than 30 days after purchase we were stuck. In summary, it does a good job filtering but may not last long.

After usage for a week or so the flow becomes terribly slow. It’s been like that for a long time. Bought new, then a week or two, the flow slows to a drip. Terrible.
