Works for one minute and then is unresponsive

I successfully set up this timer in the upstairs bathroom, and now I'm trying to install one in the downstairs bathroom. After getting it all set up and switching the breaker back on the fan turned on for one minute (as expected). Then it turned off (as expected). But now none of the buttons on the switch will turn it back on again. Thinking it may have been a faulty switch, we exchanged it for a new one. The new one exhibits the same behavior. Any idea why this is happening?
Asked by: bran
I had the same problem. I reversed the "hot" and "load" connections, waited 5 or 10 minutes before trying it again, and it works perfectly.

How do the LEDs function?

The timer works, but I don't understand the LEDs. I expect that the time I select would light the adjacent LED, but it only flashes for a fraction of a second every 15 seconds. Is that intentional?
Asked by: Jim
I bought a timer years ago. You push the time button and a green led turns on and stays on for the time you pushed. It works exactly the way most of the people on this review thought it should work. I thought I was buying the same switch because it looked exactly alike. The new switch just flashes when you push the time you want. The LED is blue. I thought I had wired something wrong until I read these reviews. Turns out the old fan timer is Pass & Seymour. So if you want your timer light not to flash but stay on buy the Pass & Seymour. The GE is just fine for me though I found it a nuisance at first because I didn't know the difference. So be aware of how different timer brands act and choose to your tastes. Just wish I knew the differences before I bought the second timer may have chosen differently.

I only have 2 wires attached to my current fan switch and a bunch of wires behind it that bundled in wirenut connectors. The GE switch has 3 wires, I'm assuming the 3rd wire I'm missing is the ground. Where should I attach that?
Asked by: JW
First check to see if bundled wires are grounds, which they probably are. If they aren't, and you have a metal box you could ground to that. Then just hook up the black and white wires normally to the timer. Hope this helps. Also the timer needs to charge for about a minute or two before you use it. Good luck.

Customer Reviews

In-Wall Digital Countdown Timer is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 121.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from nice timer, shame about the flashing lights! The timer looks good, and I like the number of minutes/hours available - these are the 2 reasons I chose it. Problem 1: Oddly, even when the switch is not in use there is an intermittent flash of purple light from 2 of the indicator lights every 20 seconds or so. I have no idea what purpose this serves, and it's really annoying at night so I am going to have paint or tape over the lights. Problem 2: The electrician tried hooking this timer up to a WhisperGreen Panasonic fanlight but it didn't work. This fan has a continuous fan capacity and booster which I have preset to an hour. We set continuous to zero and booster to 130 CFM, but this timer doesn't work with the 130 booster, whereas a springwound timer does work. So I am using my HomeDepot timer with my other fan (Whisperceiling 200CFM) and it works ok with that.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wouldn't buy again As others have noted, you need to wait about 10-minutes after installing before it will work normally. I suspect most of the reviews claiming it was DOA were simply not reading the instructions. The benefit of this unit is that it works without a neutral wire in the box and is suitable for vent fans. If you have neutral in the switchbox, I recommend getting a timer that uses the neutral and pay attention to whether it supports motor loads if switching a vent fan. The lights on this only flash once every 5 seconds, so it's really annoying that you can't easily tell how many minutes are left or how long it'll run if you just hit the big button. You just end up standing there staring at it waiting for the led to flash. This one died after about a year following a power outage. It's getting replaced with a Leviton 6260M since it's switching a bath fan, I have a neutral in the box, and I like how the Leviton operates better..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good for bathroom fan I decided to buy a timer for the power room fan because we kept forgetting turning it off. This timer works perfect for us. It does not need a neutral wire. The blue blinking light does not bother us at all. Actually I like it. The preset timer settings are 5min/15min/30min/1h/2h/4h. We usually use 5min/15min settings. I would prefer a 10min setting rather than 2h/4h settings. The price is much more reasonable than other similar timer switches on the market. Just remember to wait for 1 minute to charge after switching on the power. It is documented in the instruction.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Useful device We use this device as a timer on a water sending pump for our hot water heater. The previous owners of the house were very environmentally conscious and plumbed the house so that water only leaves the hot water tank when this switch is in the on position. Needless to say with children we discovered that the switch was nearly universally on and our water heater bills were insanely high. We put this timer on the tank and now the kids only get to set it for what they need as far as showering, dishes etc. Usually 15 minutes for a shower and 2 hours for the dishwasher. The only complaint I have is that you have to observe the status slights for 20 seconds to observe whether the system is on, then observe the bottom light for another 20 seconds to observe if it is off.. We have not had a failure of the timer yet in the month we have owned it and the psuh buttons give a very satisfying "Clunk" when you push them to tell you you have pushed them far enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great timer for the $ We have kids and this is a great solution to keeping the fan running after a bath, etc and not having to worry about shutting it off. It also replaced an older rotary timer which was getting stuck. We already have these styles of switches, but if you don't you'll need to consider getting the toggle-types so the plates will work. I was a bit concerned after reading some of the negative reviews about the light (blinking) that is emitted but they must have fixed it as I have 3 and none do it that I can see. Installing is easy, but I've experienced that they don't want to work right away...almost like they need some power for a minute or 2 then everything is fine.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bizarre user interface I've used other timers similar to this, and on those items you press the desired time button and the LED indicator for that button comes on to show that the load is now on for that duration. On this timer--you can't tell this from the packaging, you only find it in the instruction sheet inside the box--it says "The LED will blink to let you know the last time used....Time will blink every 20 seconds to show the last time used." So in other words, it blinks once when you turn it on--adding no value, since presumably you are aware of what button you have pressed--and then after that it will blink once every 20 seconds. Why not stay on the whole time? It's not like it's battery-powered or generating a lot of heat....makes no sense to me. If I had been able to shop around I would have purchased the GE 15088 countdown timer instead, which I have used previously and didn't need an owner's manual to understand.
