This would be virtually impossible to do and if you attempted to do so you definitely would NOT be happy with the outcome. Grohe smartboxes are meant to be used on either new construction or complete bathroom renovations where this smartbox would be securely anchored to the wall along with running new water outputs to supply tub spouts, showerheads, wands, and optional secondary side wall outputs. Pictures attached show a typical earlier generation Grohe rough-in box which depicts a tub spout and a single showerhead

This Grohe Rapido SmartBox is a well made rough-in box which must be installed prior to any of the thermostatic valves. Similar to a prior Grohe 35026000 except this particular rough-in box will allow you to ultimately have three water outlets for those who want more than the normal tub outlet and showerhead. Two ½-inch NPT brass plugs are supplied with this Smartbox so you can have a little as 1 outlet to as many outlets you wish with the addition of added Rapido Smartboxes. This particular Grohe 35601000 is easy to install and will fit in shallower wall cavities unlike the older Grohe rough-in which had deeper wall cavity requirements.

The Rapido Smartbox is required if you are installing any of a number of Grohtherm controls. It consists of a round plastic box with a heavy brass ring inside that contains the pipe connectors. You first install the Smartbox, connect it to your plumbing, and test for leaks. There is an insert which takes the place of the valve/trim assembly while installing and testing - you discard this afterward. The instructions provided are in a small printed booklet with "IKEA-style" pictographs that are often hard to decipher. I recommend going to Grohe's web site, downloading the PDF of this document, and printing it full size. Even then some of the instructions can be confusing. There are a variety of ways you can mount the Smartbox in a wall. What I ended up doing was mounting a board between two studs and screwing the box onto the board. I do have some advice for particular installation steps: In Step 3, when you are creating the hole for the Smartbox, be extremely careful not to make the hole any bigger than specified. The reason for this is that the valve and trim doesn't cover much beyond this circle. Even so, try to get the Smartbox as centered in the hole as you can. Step 4 shows you screwing the mounting flange to the shower wall. Do NOT do this unless you'll be covering the outside of the wall with tile, etc., as the trim plate will not cover these screws! In my case I had a fiberglass tub surround and just pushed the flange up against the inside of the surround. You will end up with the plastic cylinder of the Smartbox protruding into the shower area. The instructions for installing the valve/trim have you cut this flush with the outer surface. It wasn't at all clear to me from the instructions that this is what they wanted, so be aware. Once it was all done, it was nice and secure, and the valve worked well. But it was more of a hassle than I expected, and I would have appreciated more detailed installation instructions.

Great build quality
Bought this for a 3 head shower system - I chose this line specifically because it offers individual pressure control. Rough in box is of extremely high quality and I'm not worried about embedding it in my wall.
