Not as pictured, but still strong
The 2x2 inch plate on top of the base you see in the picture is not really there. I think the original may have had this extra support plate, but the new unit I just received from HD had the pipe welded directly to the base. The positive is that this is actually a heavy duty steel base. It comes with 4" bolts to hold it to the roof. The pipe opening is 3/4"ID so I imagine it will fit any Good Directions weather vane. The 3/4 pipe has two small bolts that tighten down onto the weather vane pole to keep it from coming out of the pipe.
I wanted to do something different, so I rebuilt a windmill weather vane from the garden. It weighs three times the amount of a large copper weather vane and sits 23" high and 36" long. The base is still able to handle this design. Because it is placed on a copula with a 3/12 pitch, I had to bend the legs flatter, then bolt through the roof into a 2x10 wood plate inside the attic. I placed the legs in a N/W by S/E direction since most of the wind comes from that direction, although I don't think it will matter since the legs are wide and long.
I would suggest buying this more expensive unit rather than trying to cut cost. I have a feeling that friends will want my advice going forward and I will suggest the heavy duty mount. It can be bent to meet any roof pitch, just add some shingle asphalt goo or metal roof sealant goo when installing.
