Questions & Answers

What is the purpose of the load output? I am assuming the output with the light bulb symbol is the load output.

Is it preferable to connect an inverter to the load terminals as opposed to connecting it directly to the battery? Why?
Asked by: Pete
I don't want to be contentious, but "Me" in Oregon is not correct (with all due respect, see more below). The only reason i know is that I thought the same thing he/she did and kept draining my batteries every night. So here's the answer: This thing is basically a street light, or night light controller. So you can basically program the "Load" to turn on at sunset and turn off at dawn, or you can vary that by several hours before/after dawn each way. It is NOT a Load "DIVERTER", which is what "Me" describes. If your batteries are fully charged, then it WILL divert some power to the load; that's true. So at 2pm when the sun is bright, the load will be activated. But at night, it will turn the load on as well, and run your batteries down to the disconnect voltage, about 11.xV. If you want a true load DIVERTER, then you're looking at something like the Xantrex Schneider C40 series which can be used as an charge controller, OR as a Load Diverter. THIS IS the type of product that "Me" actually describes. I thought the same thing at first. The only thing I think of for an application similar to the one "Me" describes, would be to hook up a dump load, which i don't see on the HD website, to divert excess power when batteries are charged, and install a blocking diode inline with the battery connection that prevents battery discharge, but that is not how this thing is designed. Think of it as a Street Light controller, which it is good for. It will overcharge batteries if the solar panels are large enough.

Asked by: waleye
As noted below, a 100% reading does not necessarily indicate that the batteries are in float mode, but it does mean they are close. Also note that this controller does have an automatic EQ cycle that can be adjusted with the app (contact Grape Solar directly for the app download).

They know their "stuff" (I had purchased another one earlier from another place and it was too small)...It handles my 2 panels, keeps the battery charged, and a 12 volt timer makes the lighting system work effortlessly! It has been working for almost 3 months. I will add another panel and battery for another few lights etc.

The on-line manual indicates this will also work with a 48V system (four 12V panels in series), but the instructions that came with the unit have that option blacked out. Since I have a 48V system, it had to be returned. It is probably OK for 12V and 24V systems, but not for me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Using it, but not real pleased This product was advertised to manage and monitor load. Any load drawing more current than a small LED lightbulb trips the circuit. I set the over-discharge and recovery voltage per technician guidance, but no joy. Charging management works fine so far.
