Q:Will PWM controller work in 24V series mode? Instructions say 12V. What is the open circuit voltage in 24V series mode?
by|Jul 7, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Yes, the GS-PWM-20A charge controller can detect and charge 24V battery banks. The kit you purchased is designed for 12V systems only. This limitation is due to the voltage of the panel itself, which is only enough to charge 12V batteries. To achieve 24V charging, 2 panels must be connected in series, doubling the input voltage to the controller. In your case, this means that the Voc (open circuit voltage) of the 50W panel (22.9V) will double to 45.8V, providing plenty of power for charging the 24V bank. Note: Actual output of this panel when connected is 19.38V maximum, so two in series will produce about 39V under direct sun. 24V battery banks typically require at least 30V input to reach full charge.

Q:I want to install string lights in a part of my backyard with no outlet. dont like the solar lights I have found

    Answer This Question

A:  No You need a battery and a small inverter. The solar cell charges the battery and inverter changes the 12 volt dc to 120 volts ac. I have been using this for three years to power and light a small leather shop in my back yard.

A:  This kit will provide DC power while the sun is up. If you plan to use these while the sun is down, you will need a deep cycle battery. If the lights are AC electric, you will need an inverter. Reach out to support@grapesolar.com for assistance in sizing system components.

A:  This is a 12-volt system, so the string of lights would have to be 12 volt lights and a battery would be needed to store the energy from each day's sun. I've used this system to run a 12-volt pump for 30 minutes a day up to 5 days a week for about 3 years now. I use the pump to water my garden with rain water. I consider this system very reliable. For a battery I use a deep cycle Marine battery.

A:  without more info it is tough to answer your question. this is simply a solar panel and charge control unit. It will provide 12 volts dc when sun is shinning but nothing when dark / cloudy etc.. To be usable you need to add a 12 volt battery for the charge unit to charge and then use the battery to run the lights IF 12 Volt. and so forth. google solar power and read a bit . by the solar lights, much asier and cheaper in the end....

          by|Jun 14, 2022

A:  No. I say this do to the vagueness of the question. I would have to assume the lights are 12 volt and the plug is a USB. This being said, MAYBE. Since the USB only produces 5 volts, they may light but not as bright as intended or expected. Perhaps satisfactory depending on your preference.

A:  If low voltage as in 12v strings lights than you could. You need to have a battery to use lights at night.

Q:will this system run a water softener regeneration valve?

                Answer This Question

A:  This kit won't run anything by itself, you also need a deep cycle battery (30 Ah minimum) and possibly an inverter depending on the device you're powering. To properly size an off-grid system or battery backup system, we would need to know the following: 1. Your estimated daily power usage in watt (we need exact daily watt-hour numbers from customers because many standard appliances and devices have widely variable power consumptions). Energystar’s yearly kWh ratings for fridges and freezers are also helpful to have. 2. Maximum inverter wattage and voltage required – what is the most power, in watts, that the inverter will need to produce, and are you using any 220 volt appliances? 3. Location or zip code of where the panels will be mounted. 4. Months of the year that the system will be needed (winter, summer, year-round, etc.). Please note that battery-based solar requires 2 to 4 times as many panels for winter production.

                by|Feb 12, 2019

A:  How much power does your device require? There’s no way to know without more specific information.

Q:I have a mounted 100 watt panel on our travel trailer with a zamp charge controller and was thinking about adding something like this to supplement when we are parked in an area with trees. Is it possible to add this kit (or the 100 watt kit) to our existing system?

A:  Mine is stand alone with a deep marine battery and a 50 watt panel. It's great only for a back up power supply for my tv, stand fan, and light during power outage. It works great for that. I have never used it for any other purpose.

A:  Yes you can, just be sure to connect the wires on the solar panals, positve to positve and negitve to negitve before the controller.I have done it and it works.

A:  Yes you can I have a 175 and two 100 watt panels on my rv with a 40 amp charge controller with three #29 batteries and it works great Mount them on well because of wind Ken.

A:  as long as the charge controllers is designed for the load it will work.

                          by|Jan 31, 2019

A:  As long as the Zamp controller is also a PWM type controller, you should be able to run this system into your battery as a separate charging source alongside your Zamp system as noted below.

Very happy with the panel and charge controller. The output is great. My only complaint would be the wiring came without the spade lugs that are needed to connect controller to battery. Frustrating when it's a 50 mile round trip to civilization! I improvised, but it would've been easy and inexpensive for the manufacturer to have done this. I built a portable stand for mine. Am very happy. But my name is David not Andy. Review won't let me write my name! :-P

Great product! (A little room for improvement)
This was my first experience with any type of solar products, and I was skeptical, and a little overwhelmed as I jumped into it. I bought the 50w off-grid pkg to install on my small hunting shack to charge and maintain a deep cycle marine battery. I am supplying electric to the shack, from the battery, through a 500w inverter. After shopping around I found the Grape kit to have decent reviews, and I was able to pick it up at my local Home Depot. I was surprised how big this 50w panel was (24"x26") and it seemed to be made very well. Instructions were not excellent, but better than most. I only gave it 4 stars simply because there was not any mounting hardware. In my opinion, they should just make the kit $125 and include everything you need to set it up. Anyhow, after another trip back to HD, and an extra $30, I made a homemade adjustable bracket (pictured). After installing everything and setting the controller up (which was simple), I ran a small handheld vacuum to clean up the shack. My battery went from 100% down to 70% after running the vac for roughly 15m. Evening set in and the battery stayed at 70%. I checked it again first thing in the morning and the battery was at 68%, then the magic happened. The sun came up and after only 3 hours my battery was back to 100% and has been holding steady there for a week. This will be more than enough to charge and maintain a deep cycle battery for occasional electric use in my off-grid hunting shack. Also, during the install process I reached out to Grape for advice. Their customer service was top notch. Very quick response and they made several suggestions that helped me along the way. My first solar experience was a very good one and I am planning to install the same kit on my camper/trailer.

It works. Washington state Fall rain brings about 12v and 0.1amps with no sun and drizzle. The highest I've seen it was 24.3 v and 2.4amps on a sunny, clear, August day in Washington state.
