Q:How does the shock absorbing lanyard work and how is connected to the harness and safety rope?

Answer This Question

A:  The shock absorbing lanyard is connected to the dorsal D-ring of an appropriate full-body harness and a compatible anchorage connector as determined by a jobsite Competent Person. Please see the below documentation or call Guardian Customer Service for more information at 800-466-6385. https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/catsy.672/85045+Rev.+L+01220+Guardian+External+Shock+Lanyards+small.pdf https://www.guardianfall.com/images/24047-A_Guardian_Fall_Calculator.pdf

A:  See this guide on fall protection safety equipment, section on "connection devices". https://www.grainger.com/know-how/safety/working-at-heights/fall-prevention/kh-osha-fall-protection-defense-guide#:~:text=Shock%2Dabsorbing%20lanyards%20can%20be,vertical%20free%20fall%20hazard%20application.

A:  The lanyard connects to the ring on the back of a safety harness (sold separately). You are responsible for connecting the other end of the lanyard to a secure attachment, cable, rope, etc. In the event of a fall, the shock absorber works by tearing apart to decelerate your body gradually, softening the sudden stop at the end of the lanyard. If you fall and the lanyard shock absorber activates, the lanyard must be removed from service and discarded.

        Answer This Question

A:  Hello. The maximum lanyard length that can be used in combination with a vertical lifeline (VLL) in Fall Arrest applications is 3', so a 6' lanyard would not be permitted in this scenario. The 3' length is set to prevent free fall in excess of what is permitted by the system.

A:  Yes, Of course. The bottom line is: it is much better to use a lanyard secured to ANYTHING than it is to work without one. Attach the lanyard to your D-ring, then attach it to a secure point. If you have to interpose a rope between the lanyard and the secure point, so be it. The rope must be very strong. The knot(s) must be correct and well-tied. (No Granny knots!) Actually the rope should be tied to a ring and the lanyard should be attached to the ring, too. You don't want the lanyard's hook cutting the rope if you (heaven forbid) fall. The lanyard is good for one fall. When you fall with the lanyard, it stretches out and slows your fall so you don't stop falling with a jerk and injure your neck or back. Using safety equipment is good. If you are using the lanyard for work, your supervisor will have specific rules that you have to follow. Hang in there. Be safe. Falls from height are the number one killer of workers. ~0le

            A:  Yes.

            by|Oct 20, 2019

A:  yes, that will work but it will add extra weight to the line. Also doing this you ave to double check for wear and tear on each end of all lines as well as verifying clips are secure and cannot come undone!

A:  Not enough detail to give you sound advice. Not just any rope would do. It should be approved for the same maximum loading that the Lanyard is or more. I use 5/16" airline cable properly terminated and double clamped on both ends and attached with shackles. Take no shortcuts. Good Luck

A:  The instruction sheet says that the user capacity range is between 130 pounds and 310 pounds. I weigh about 175 pounds and am very confident that this lanyard will support me if needed. I haven't fallen with it yet, and with continued vigilance and a spritz of luck will never test the ability of this lanyard to support me.
