First of all, as of 11-02-2018, the picture of the Guardian Rope Positioning Device #01520 on Home Depot is not correct. I don't know what is the pictured item. The Guardian has a rope grab at one end of the yellow 18-inch webbing and a very heavy-duty safety snap hook at the other end. I needed to do some work on my metal roof which is pitched 6/12. I've been up there before both with and without a rope, but I merely held on to the rope, which was tied to a tree beyond the other side of the house. Older and wiser, for this event I decided to at least decrease my fear, if not increase my safety. I bought a padded belt with a single D-loop at the waist and got this rope grab to attach to my rope and the belt. I decided on the belt rather than a full harness because of where my rope was attached and the direction it would be coming from.
The rope grab is sized for 5/8-inch rope but worked well with my 1/2-inch rope. You have to put it on from the end of the rope as it is not the type that you can put on at any point. It grabbed tightly and easily let loose as I went up the ladder and onto the roof (you don't have to squeeze it to go up -- you just pull it along and it automatically grabs the rope again at the new position). On the way down I squeezed it to release it with every couple of steps and moved it back down the rope.
Please be advised that the way I used this device worked for me but it is not the OSHA-approved and Guardian-recommended way it is supposed to be used. The proper instructions are included with the device and you should follow them.
Home Depot's low price, free shipping and relatively quick delivery were excellent but if you want to see what it actually looks like and read more about it I recommend that you go directly to Guardian's website.
