      Answer This Question

A:  Bought mine at a Home Depot store about a year ago. I use for a stand-alone home ice machine. For my application definitely want to use a long-life filter, need to pull out machine from wall to access. Perhaps they sell on-line if not carried at store.

Easy external install and the water tastes great! Four months ago I purchased a new bottom freezer fridge with an ice maker which had no internal water filter as an option. I went to my local HD to seek external water / ice maker filter options and came across this HDX one. There were a few other options from other brands, but this HDX was the only one rated to last 5 years and was priced right at thirty bucks. I had no prior water line going to the fridge so I had to buy a few other parts to make it work. I got the JG Ice Maker Water Supply Kit and a few 1/4" Compression Coupling Adapter Fittings. I put everything together (see last pic) and saved a lot of time and money by not calling a plumber. Just make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hose/tube into the filter with or without the included adapters. The filter has two install methods. One allows the tubing to be pushed in which is what I did. While the other uses the removable adapters that have a screw-on connection. Anyways installation is easy either way, just do some research if you don’t know what you’re doing. The Water filter can be easily mounted anywhere using zip ties or pipe mount clamps. It’s been four months now of me using the filter and everything works well without any leaks. The water comes out clean and tastes great. It was recommended to discard a few batches of ice or water that first run through the filter. After that it should be good for 5 years with average use.

I purchased this product back in September of 2013. Its being 3 years it feels is asking for a replacement. I can taste the bad flavor of our tab water. I am replacing it by January of 2017. I am satisfied overall. I am changing it cause of the tab flavor water I am tasting right now. The only things is that I went yesterday to pick it at the shelf in the store and they didn't have it so I ordered online. Good stuff for the price.

          Long-lasting
This filter reduces the hassle of having to go out and buy new filters for your refrigerator every 6 months. This one will last five years. My current refrigerator did not have a water filter for the ice maker/water dispenser, so I had added a filter to the back of the refrigerator. Now with this new filter, I can change once and have it last five years and save money and time on future replacements. This particular filter will fit ANY water appliance as long as you connect it on the external water supply line. I had 2 braided stainless steel water lines with 1/4" connectors on the ends. So I just unscrewed the old filter, and screwed on the new filter. It also allows you to install the filter using 1/4" plastic water tubing. Remove the adapters and insert the tubing. Overall, good directions in the package AND on the filter. The filter is also marked with "IN" and "OUT" although it was hard to read. Be sure to write the date on your filter. There was no place to do this, so I just wrote it on the side. Also, I had to use some wire to hang my filter from the back of the fridge; it does not come with any mounting bracket. While the filter says it will last five years, it did not indicate its capacity in gallons. Some filters of this type will have a rating of 20,000 gallons; I am not sure about this one. A rating is important because the filter will really only last for a certain amount of usage which on average will be five years. Save yourself some cash; install this five year filter.

          Easy Installation and Cheaper Alternative
This is a cheaper alternative than replacing the GE filter (Model: MWF) located in the refrigerator cabinet. (The refrigerator came with a "cap" to replace the OEM filter when not used.) After Installing the 1/4-inch water supply, the valve was opened to flush the filter and purge air. Once flushed the outlet water was connected and the filter was simply mounted on a band clamp using an existing screw on the back of the refrigerator. Total installation time took roughly three minutes.

          Crystal clear ice
I was completely grossed out with how my ice looked after either doing plumbing work or the fire department flushed the hydrant out front. The ice being made would plop into the ice tray, a nice yellow color... DISGUSTING! With this exterior filter I do not need to worry about that anymore, I hope. Time will tell, but it looks good so far. The ice is looking as clear as ever. The filter is directional & has the "in" & "out" sides labeled on the filter. Installation took maybe 15 minutes at the most, 10 of which was flushing the filter for 10 minutes as the instructions stated. It has compression connections available as well as push-to-connect fittings. I used both, insane right? I installed a new shutoff & used PEX from there to the filter, then connected the filter to the already existing copper line that was connected to the freezer. I have not had any leaks from either connection. Now, along with being a snob about my filtered drinking water, I can be a snob about my filtered ice cubes! I love it!

          Exceptional
Easy install. Just one trip to my local Home Depot for parts ( 1/4in.Compression Fittings). Secured the filter to a copper pipe with 2 cable ties. The cartridge is super light even when filled with water. See photos. It never gets below freezing where I live so I did not have to worry about water freezing. Both ends of the filter are marked "IN" and "OUT". In is for the supply water and out goes to the fridge. After hook up I ran about a gallon of water through the fridge to purge the line of air and sediment. The water tastes great and there are no UFO's. I will leave my existing filter alone and when the red light comes on to change the filter I will just reset it. I put a date on the filter to remind me when to change it. We are only a family of 3 so this filter should last longer than 5 years

Saves you money on fridge filters, Lasts up to five years, Easy to install
We have an issue with a bit of sediment in our city water lines. Getting an external water filter like this is essential unless you want to replace the much more expensive filters in your refrigerator frequently. This will act as a prefilter, removing the vast majority of sediment from your lines before it gets to the icemaker/refrigerator. This filter is ready to go from the box with male 1/4" fittings on both ends. If you need to use press-in style water lines you can remove the 1/4" fittings following the directions. There are indicators of IN and OUT on the filter ends. Make sure to orient the filter in the proper direction on your line and then flush the filter with water for ten minutes per the manual. Installation on the water lines is as simple as unscrewing the water line from your supply valve and screwing this filter in between the connectors. Then secure the filter overhead if needed so that it doesn't hang on the line. I used plastic plumbing strap and it works great. Since this catches the sediment before it can clog your fridge's expensive water filter this economical filter will save you a LOT of money in the long run. I highly recommend it.

A long life external filter, installed in 5 seconds.
This long life external HDX filter can be installed in 5 seconds; just cut the 1/4 inch inline tube, and connect it on either sides of the in line filter. This filter is made to last five years and is certified by the NSF to ensure reduction of sediment as well as chlorine taste and odor. It also comes with a set of brass connectors, which can be used to connect other inline tubes for different type of refrigerators I installed it, tested it for leaks and the taste of water. No leaks, and the taste of water is excellant. The water pressure is normal as before. This is an excellent product which has 5 years of life, where as the pre-installed filter in the fridge is only about 6 months.
