Q:Can this be used with hardy plank adhered to the flap? Or is hardy plank too heavy for it to operate properly when it is attached to the flap?

Answer This Question
A:Â If the siding material is so heavy that it effects blower performance, Hide-a-Vent recommends using Azek instead. It can be planed down to the same thickness as other siding materials and painted to match. Azek, a wood substitute is made of a foam core PVC. Therefore it is not terribly dense or heavy. Yet is long lasting and resistant to the elements. Using Azek instead of other materials is discussed on the installation page of the Hide-a-Vent web site.

Q:Does it do a good job of keeping cold air out?

Answer This Question
A:Â This product is simply plastic so I don't think it is going to have significant insulating properties. What makes this unique is that you attach the same exterior cladding that is on the rest of the house to it; so that the vent is hidden when closed. Now if that cladding has insulating properties that is certainly going to increase the protection from cold air infiltration. In my experience when cold air gets in it is not because the vent is bad but because the vent is not completely closing or the flapper is to light and any small breeze opens it. So if this unit is properly installed with the correct cladding attached it usually works great. If hover you are in a very cold and windy area you may also elect to have an additional item called a back draft preventer installed in the duct work leading to this vent. That would act to further prevent draft from bringing cold air into the house.

Answer This Question
A:Â This product is only produced in the off white color seen in the pictures. It can be painted. However when installed properly with a piece of the siding attached, you don;t really see much of the vent to begin with.

A:Â Ours came in white so we were able to paint the small portion not covered with siding with our house color.

Q:Is there a bird screen available for this vent? Or if this comes with bird screen?
by|May 18, 2020

Answer This Question
A:Â This product does not come with a bird screen. When the door is open the air being discharged should dissuade any bird from entering. And when the fan is off the door should then prevent a bird from entering. I am aware that some inexpensive aluminum hoods have screens because over time the thin metal can distort leaving the door ajar. but this should not happen with ours.

Great way to stop an eyesore.
This worked out well on my house without too much fuss. Seems like it is designed for new construction, but I was able to make it work without removing my siding by creating a trim around it. It is prominent in the picture, but when you are walking by it in reality, one barely notices it. I used it to vent my over the range microwave. Love being able to vent my kitchen.

this should be just what i needed to install the vent but have it somewhat blend into the wall, since it is in an area where people are seated on a deck. its heavy duty for a plastic material the door is free to open with fan pressure and yet heavy enough to close when not used. im planning to use it with cement siding and hope the piece i use on the vent is not to heavy to allow the door to open enough. if so it should be easy to prep for paint to blend into the wall. much nicer than any tin vent i have come across.

This is not just a kitchen exhaust fan , it's also a camouflage to hide the vent. Your siding, flashing or block Judy fits over the vent and it blends right into your house. It is rectangular and the opening is 3 1/4 x 10 1/4". It's designed for microwave hoods, and most residential kitchen hoods. It also includes double sided tape for an optional application for siding
Worked well as replacement for old one that did not close.

It was okay. For what it cost, I expected it to be dipped in gold. It did what it needed to, but we had to modify it a lot. I wish there had been another option for us that was less expensive, but this was it.

Sheerly on looks this gets 5+ stars! It's the best looking exhaust vent for our range hood I have ever seen available on the market--I had no idea something like this was available. Installation was fine. It's a standard installation size.
Here's something I didn't realize, which makes it 10 stars!---you can cut out a trim piece of your vinyl siding (or other siding) and attach it to the vent door with the included adhesive. When you do that, it blends COMPLETELY in and makes your house look very clean.
The bad: (2 stars) The wind catches the flap and gets annoying. Flap, flap, flappity flap, all day long. The designers need to attach a small spring in the door flap, just enough to keep it closed, yet able to be pushed open when you turn on the exhaust. I mounted our's on a west wall, and we get prevailing north and northwest winds like crazy, so it's been driving us nuts. I picked up some flat strips of adhesive magnets that aren't very strong, and I'm going to solve that problem....hopefully.
