Q:Are new replacement remotes for older ceiling fans?????
by|Mar 3, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A:Â Thank you for your question. These are universal remotes designed to work with most downrod style fans. These remotes are not designed to be replacement remotes and are not compatible with other receivers. The included receiver will need to be installed in the fan in order for the remote to communicate with the fan. This remote is not compatible with fans that have a built-in receiver or fans that have a DC motor.

Q:I can't seem to get the light to dim as much as the previous controller. 1% in the hubspace app is equivalent to about 25% from the previous receiver. Is there a way to calibrate it?

Answer This Question
A:Â Thank you for your question. There is not a way to calibrate the remote/app. We would suggest trying different dimmable bulbs to see if that improves the issue. Some Led bulbs perform differently than others due to different drivers in the bulbs.

This is a dynamite remote control. It will convert your existing indoor ceiling fan into a smart fan via your home wifi.
When I first took it and it's components out of the box I was very concerned that installation was going to be extremely complex. But the manufacturer has provided an installation video on the internet. The URL for the video is included in the literature in the box. It's a 13 minute video that makes the installation easy and very understandable, starting with removing your exisitng fan from the housing, opening the housing, detaching existing receiver wires, installing the new receiver, putting the housing back on and finally placing the fan back on the housing. The photography was clear. After watching this video I believe anyone can install this remote.
In my review I've included a picture of all the contents of the box. But basically you get, the remote, the receiver, a wall cradle and all the hardware to install.
After installation you can control the fan with the remote, or connect it to Alexa or Google Assist and control it using either of them. You can also control it through the free Hubspace app for your phone or tablet.
The remote can dim, has multiple fan speeds and even has a timer. The remote is about 1.5 " wide, about 4.75" long and about .75" thick.
A few things of caution: this can not be used with DC motor fans, fans with existing receivers or ceiling hugger fans because there isn't enough room in the housing to accomodate the receiver for this remote.
The receiver's dimensions are printed on the outside of the box, ( per my measure it is 2.25" wide. 4.75" long and 1" thick). I suggest you measure your fan's housing space and compare it to the measurements on the box to insure the receiver will fit your unit.
Once past the intimidation of installation (which the video will do for you) this is a fabulous remote.

This device is perfect if you have a ceiling fan that has only one light switch, as only one power source is needed. This comes with a bluetooth remote that can operate the fan and the light independent of each other. One feature that I especially liked, is the ability to have the fan operate at variable speeds. The manufacturer calls this "Comfort Breeze". The universal design will work with most ceiling fan brands. Installation was straight forward, but getting the receiver into the carrier was a bit tight and then getting the canopy was also a bit tight. Looking at the curve on the canopy and my other ceiling fans, I believe it would have been a bit easier if I had chosen another fan where the canopy was a bit roomier. Setting up the WifI and connecting to my home assistants was easy. At first it did not seem to respond to the voice commands, but the instructions detail the proper commands and since I started using the proper commands it works great! The WiFi antenna comes with mounting tape to stick it to the ceiling. It is hardly noticeable.

I'm bummed out - A short backstory; within the last year we got a smart fan for our daughters room - it works but the software is kinda garbage (brand rhymes with Punter) The fan in our son's room was not smart but we really like the fan so this product was supposed to be the perfect solution to bring it into the 21st Century. Installation was so darn easy - few wire nuts, tucked the unit into the base, couldn't have taken more than 10 minutes and we were in business. The remote functions worked great, no problems there. I downloaded the app, started to set things up and that's basically the end of the line. It got stuck at the "Waiting for device screen" - Ohhh noooo, ugh. I tried a few more times, un-installed, reset the power, tried two other devices (phones and tablets) and still the same outcome. This same runaround is what I originally experienced with the other brand. I don't understand how either of these two big brand fan manufactures can't get these smart functions sorted out. I'm happy we have at least a remote now but the wi-fi feature is basically useless to us and that kinda seems like the selling point here....

The Hampton Bay Smart Fan Receiver and Remote Control is the product of my dreams. Literally. Over the past two years I've been on a quest to make my house smarter and gain voice control over lighting, entertainment, appliances, access, and climate control. One of the things I was convinced SHOULD exist, but couldn't find until this product, was a Wi-Fi retrofit to my existing ceiling fans. One alternative that had promise, and shares its name with a fictional British secret agent, has the shortcoming of not knowing the current status of the devices it purports to control, so "BEDROOM LIGHT ON" would mimic a button press and instead turn the lights OFF if they were on to begin with. This Hampton Bay ceiling fan control doesn't have that limitation. It wires into the ceiling fan at the canopy - in my case, replacing a wireless, but not smart, remote, so it has full control and awareness of the current state of the fan/light it's connected to. Note that this product cannot be used to control a DC fan, or one with remote control built into the fan body itself. Installation in my (non-Hampton Bay) fan took about two hours and complete disassembly and removal of my fan, but that time included some much needed cleaning as well. The available installation video showed a much simpler installation, so be aware that your mileage may vary. Once installation was complete, everything worked pretty much as it was supposed to, and as I expected it to, which is a novelty in my DIY world! The Hubspace app installed fine on my ancient Android phone, and successfully linked up with the fan using both Bluetooth and WiFi. Overall I'd give this product a B+ and recommend it. Some unforced errors keep this from earning an "A", but since this is a whole new game, a few strikes don't lead to an "out", they just keep it from being a perfect game. The remote control is considerably less durable-feeling than the wireless remote it replaced, and while it has identical configuration switches, the two are not interchangeable. The canopy-mounted unit has a WiFi antenna that lays flat against the ceiling and must protrude beyond the canopy cover -- but the wire that connects it was about 2" (6 cm) too short to work in my installation. I had to cut a notch (using a rotary tool) in the steel ceiling mount as a work-around. Skipped from the installation instructions is the need to clean the ceiling mount surface before installing supplied rubber spacers, otherwise the peel and stick adhesive will stick only to the dust. Connection of the device and the Hubspace app requires scanning a QR code specific to each individual receiver, That code is on the receiver itself and on a piece of paper supplied with the installation instructions. That paper is destined to be lost or not supplied to a subsequent homeowner, so there really needs to be another configuration alternative - perhaps a button in the battery compartment of the remote. There's also a missing branding opportunity that could be fixed with a small sticker advising that this fan has Wi-Fi, works with Hubspace and the user's favorite voice assistant -- and serves as a heads-up to subsequent homeowners. Finally, the application itself needs some tweaking: Too often, fan and light operation are lumped together, always in the scheduler, and too often in voice controlled situations. Note to manufacturer - in the scheduler, don't just offer "On" and "Off" choices, but "Unchanged" too! If I use the scheduler to keep the bedroom air stirred up while I sleep, I DO NOT want it to change the light setting -- keep it off if I'm already sleeping, and don't suddenly make it dark if I've got a late evening. Right now I don't have that option within the Hubspace app.

This product is great for converting a pull chain, or IR remote, Ceiling Fan into a modern Smart device. It needs no Hub, and comes with its own App (Hubspace [see pics]), which can be used with numerous other products and lets you control your devices from anywhere. It integrates with Alexa and Google, giving you voice control over your fan's speed and brightness. It has a feature called 'Comfort Speed', which randomly raises and lowers the fans speed, to simulate a natural breeze. It also comes with its own remote, in case you are Old School. The control unit is Solid State. So, instead of having a few light/speed settings (i.e. High, Medium, Low), you have 0 to 100. If your fan is already Smart, or has RF remote, there are possibly better options for integrating into Alexa/Google, but for pull chain AC fans (does not work with DC), this is an excellent choice. The manufacturer has an install video, that is very detailed https://tiny.one/hubspace ; with reminders to set your lights and speed to High, before installing.

Very easy to install wireless remote control option for many of the Hampton Bay (Home Depot brand) ceiling fans. Everything is provided to convert a non-remote ceiling fan over to a remotely controlled ceiling fan with all the options which includes light control, fan speed and on/off feature. Not all the Hampton Bay ceiling fans will be able to fit this adapter but for the larger ceiling fans with separate internal bracket for the motors will be a perfect candidate for this accessory. When in doubt just check to insure there is ample space to fit this remote adapter into the ceiling fan’s exterior housing cover.

The Hampton Bay universal smart WI-FI 4-speed ceiling fan remote control, works with Google Assistant, Alexa and an App called Hubspace that you use on your smart phone. The installation is not too hard but can a bit tricky on some fan models. It cannot be used on flush mount ceiling fans. I installed it for a Hampton Bay ceiling fan that was not mounted like the one in the instructions but I was able to get it to fit. They provide you a link for a video that is quite helpful in the installation. I did have a little trouble setting it up at first, but then realized I had not added it to the network. I named the fan "FAN" and the light named itself "Ceiling Light". Anyway, it works great and all I have to do is say "Alexa, turn on the fan."

A nice remote control unit to give virtually any ceiling fan remote control capabilities. It was super easy to wire to my fan. The challenging part was getting it to fit inside the canopy along with all of the wire connections. It takes up a lot of space. Once that was done the remote worked fine. One thing I don't like about the remote is that the light control is the 3rd button down so if I just want to turn on the light I have to fumble in the dark to find the right button. The top button will turn on the light but also turns on the fan at full speed whether the fan was on or off at your last use. I wish it had a memory function for your last setting. Also, after several attempts I could not get it to connect to my WIFI no matter what I did. I have the proper network and my signal strength is excellent in the room where the fan is, so I don't know what the problem is. The app is redundant anyway, since the remote is sufficient. However, I would have liked to use Alexa to control it, which I can't.

Once you have some smart devices in your home you want all smart devices, and I’ve been wanting a smart ceiling fan for quite some time. Little did I know you can make any ceiling fan smart, except flush mount, using an optional remote. Cue this Hampton Bay smart receiver and remote control. First I had to wire it to my fan, which I was wish was an unnecessary step. I then mounted the remote cradle to my wall. You’ll also have to install the Hubspace app, another step I wish was unnecessary. You only have so much phone space. With Hubspace you can control your fan with Alexa and Hey Google. There is an online installation video to install the receiver in your existing fan. Register on the Hubspace app then add the remote. Now set up voice assistant. After setting this up you can control the fan using Alexa, Google home or voice assistant devices. The remote has on/off, 4 fan speeds, lights on/off, comfort breeze, and an 8 hour timer. This is a remote like any ceiling fan remote. The difference is this kit gives your fan a WiFi antenna, thereby giving you the ability to also control it with your voice as well as with an app. I do wish, however, that it didn’t entail rewiring the existing fan, which is easy enough, just tedious. Includes the receiver and antenna, wall cradle, hardware and illustrated instructions.
