Q:How do I open your minute key plastic magnetic key box?

Answer This Question

A:  To open the key box, you must push down and slide the door to open.

by|Dec 29, 2022

A:  Hello Cari and thank you for your inquiry. You will need to squeeze the grooves on the side, hard while sliding door down with your thumb. It is made to be difficult to open so the key does not fall out.

      Answer This Question

A:  It depends on the size of the fob. It will hold a small to med one

A:  Hi and thank you for your inquiry. We apologize we do not recommend this item holding a key fob.

      by|Apr 23, 2023

A:  Your "fob" key holder (for LARGER fobs) would work IF it were 1/4" longer. I am in desperate need of one that my fob will fit. I am leaving on a 3,000 mile trip by myself and need one that will hold my spare fob underneath the car. Of course, it needs to have a good magnet. Before getting this newer vehicle, I have used you Hillman Magnetic Key Box for 20+ years & never once had any trouble. Sometimes hard to open but would rather that be than having in fall off the vehicle. I can always figure out how to get it open. If you folks don't have my needed size and you offer me any ideas of how to find what I need. Surely there are other folks in my same boat and would like to have your box if only you could manufacture them with just a quarter inch added. The current box is plenty wide enough. It just needs that 1/4" added to the length. Thank you in advance for any information and help that you can provide to me.

A:  This particular key box is 3 and a quarter inch x an inch and 3/4... that's pretty big I get about three keys in it... car key house key and mailbox key... Selma little room left over so if you're looking for a three and a half half inch it's going to be too small...

                          Not for modern car/truck keys
This key case is not nearly large enough for a standard Ford truck key. The in-store packaging fails to list the interior dimensions but does state, "Holds most home and auto keys". The interior space is further reduced by the magnets. This isn't apparent until the package is opened and the product can no longer be returned. Refer to the image I've attached.

A Cheaply Made, Poorly Designed, and Unusable Product
This is horrible. The instructions simply state to press on the cover and slide to open. Simple enough. However, there are 3 ridges in the plastic where you’re supposed to press while sliding - try it, it’s impossible. Instead I discovered you must press in the middle of the device, as directly under the ridges is also the single nib of plastic which keeps it closed. What’s worse, even after discovering how to actually open the thing, my mother who doesn’t have great hand strength due to arthritis, STILL couldn’t open it. So, it’s useless. And to make matters worse, all our time spent trying to open the thing resulted in the cheap gold “Hillman” lettering being rubbed off - making it non-returnable. Plus after all that effort? It isn’t even particularly water resistant. Just two pieces of plastic that slot together - not even a single O ring. I’m sure the magnets are fine, and were I to use this myself personally in a very light-duty application? I’m sure it’d be decent enough. But not with the price. And for what we needed? It’s honestly hard to imagine it being worse. Overall, the design can be greatly improved and I would not recommend this at all.

Not what I was looking for.
I found it to be larger than others that I have bought before. The pin that holds in one magnet fell out which let the magnet come out of the box. I found the pin and put it bac in but it needs to either be melted to the box or else glued in.

                            Just don’t lock yourself out!
I just got locked out in a 40 degree rain while taking out the trash. Stupid me! At least I was smart enough to have a spare house key stashed in the trusty Hillman magnetic key box... or that’s what I was thinking. So I retrieve the Hillman box and knew I’d have a struggle to get the key out. Before hiding the box, I’d rehearsed the best techniques (noted in other reviews here) to open the box... it’s darn near impossible to open on a good day. And now my hands are wet and the box is wet and slippery too. I didn’t stand a chance against this key holding vault. So I’m standing on the porch freezing and wet. And I can’t get my hands or the box dry enough to muscle the thing open. After a few minutes I gave up and got the sledge hammer from the shed. Don’t waste your money on this piece of junk until Hillman figures out how to make a sliding door on this box that doesn’t require tremendous finger strength or a sledge hammer. Lesson learned!

I've never seen one that didn't have a strong magnet. I have a hobby where I've probably opened a hundred of them that lived outside in the weather. I've never damaged a container opening one. They can be a little difficult to open, but if you use Helen's procedure it is fairly easy to open. Press your thumbs on the middle of the picture of the key and push the sliding lid away from you. Try to put your thumbs one in front of the other so you put the least pressure on the edges that slide. Don't try to use the ridged grip, that will press the lid against the body and make it harder to slide. Occasionally I run into one that's little stiff, so after I get a small opening I put something in the opening and twist it to open it more. After that it usually opens easily. The feet do rust out doors and you have to replace them occasionally if your fastidious. I've never know one to stop holding, rusted or not. It would be better if I could add a video but the picture I'm adding will have to do.
