A friend who works in construction recommended a splitting wedge for disassembling radiators. The wedge does not appear to be tempered, as shown in the attached picture. While radiators are admittedly not its intended use, I can't imagine it staying very sharp if used on oak. We ended up using a brick mason's chisel that retained its shape very nicely.

Fantastic piece of equipment! I would never consider using the fiber wedges. You need that reverberation and shock power that only a solid iron wedge can deliver! I ordered three of them. They will last forever. With the fiber wedges, you are the driver. With the iron wedges, they work for you, think about that next time you are considering your purchase. Side by side comparison, 1/4 the effort and splitting time. Plus, do you want to trust your expensive saw to a fiber wedge that can slip out, or be crushed when felling a heavy tree? Me neither.

Yes, I was able to split through smaller round cuts with sledge hammer. I now have wood replaced from winter use. Also, I am preparing for next winter as well as future campouts.

This is a good tool for splitting logs for the fire pit or fireplace. It is tapered properly to enter the log end and accomplish the split. Do not drop it on your toe!
