Q:Is this wedge durable?

Answer This Question

A:  I have just started using this wedge, but it seems to be as durable as the wedges I got it to replace. The wedges I am replacing were getting a little dinged up. I would keep using them, but they were bought buy my grandfather over 50 years ago and have sentimental value. If it weren't for that I would keep using them for another 50 years.

A:  Used for a day with a 10 lb sledge along with another wedge and has held up so far.

A:  Dear Pete, This wedge is very durable and made from Drop Forged Steel as we also made an upgrade to a much sharper edge to the product to help penetrate the log much easier.

A:  Very good and heavy steel that did my job well. Good decision to buy this wedge.

A friend who works in construction recommended a splitting wedge for disassembling radiators. The wedge does not appear to be tempered, as shown in the attached picture. While radiators are admittedly not its intended use, I can't imagine it staying very sharp if used on oak. We ended up using a brick mason's chisel that retained its shape very nicely.

Does not work for my needs
I imagine few people read wedge reviews. I did not expect to write one. This wedge does not work as a starting, continuing, or finishing wedge. It does not drive and hold. All of the older wedges I use work better in any of these capacities. The wedge has a short, flat (non-arced) cutting edge and an initial, abrupt taper. There are essentially no contours to the tool. Be it these or other factors, the bottom line is I have little use for this wedge. For informational purposes, I am currently splitting large-ish ash logs (approximately 8-30 inch diameter), 16-20 inches in length. Even on the secondary splits, this wedge was of minimal utility.

            Cheaper at HF
I returned this one when I found Harbor Freight sells a better version - the diamond shaped wedge - for half the price.

Double Bevel at tip of wedge, bad design.
The double bevel at the tip of the wedge causes the wedge to bounce out of the wood being split. I am splitting Hemlock, a soft wood. When the wedge penetrates the wood to the depth of the shoulder of the second bevel, the wedge bounces out, not too safe having a flying wedge. I purchased this wedge today and discovered the problem today. I am not sure if Home Depot will take it back, if not I will have to grind it down. Or toss it.

Just what one needs for splitting Hardwood. It even worked well with fresh maple (harder than oak, very dense hardwood). Highly recommend. Good product.

                Split it good
Had some 36” diameter slices of white maple to downsize into smaller pieces so I could actually move them. My smaller wedge was not getting the job done. With this ones help it went much smoother

Perfect but doesn't do the work itself.
Just what I needed to remove stumps.
