Has Insteon fixed the flaw in their hub that causes it to burn out after a few months, making its periferals useless?

Asked by Gumby January 8, 2020

Answers

The internal capacitors on the Hub have been upgraded starting a couple years back to correct the issue. We also have a Hub Migration Program for users that have older revision 2245-222 Hubs to get their settings migrated to a new Hub in case of failure.

Will it work with X10 switches?

Asked by Dave January 3, 2019

Answer

This is not meant for X10 switches. You might look at a Vera or the ISY series controllers.

Does a person need the hub. To record and send to laptop to view ? Where can I order other needed attachment to operate

Answer

The camera was intended to be used for viewing through the Insteon app on your mobile device. The camera can work as a stand alone IP camera and record directly to your computer without the Hub. See the full user manual for details.

Is this hub compatible with Z-Wave controlled Schlage, or any other deadbolt locks?

Asked by Tpow April 29, 2018

Answer

No. Insteon and Z-wave are different protocols. You can get a controller called an ISY994i/ZW that has the ability to control both at the same time.

So far so good. We had a isy-99 that was obsolete and I didn’t feel confident being able to program a new one (we moved to this house with it already in place). I was able to easily program the hub. Still trying to figure out the multi switches we have. Scenes were easy to create.

Pretty good... until the gremlins attack. I started with Insteon because I needed to be able to control the upper and lower outlet in the same box independently, and they offered the easiest solution I could find. That was promising, so I built out a few rooms and added motion detectors for the closet lights, since my family constantly leave those lights on. So far, so good: Closet lights shut off 30 seconds after the last motion is detected, kitchen & living room set up, porch lights automated to turn on at dusk & off at dawn, and one bedroom set up to control multiple lamps and the ceiling fan. Programming via the app was a bit clunky, and definitely slow, but I was satisfied with the end result. Until things started going wrong. The started small at first, but every few weeks, we'd notice another. * When we'd turn the kitchen light switch on, not only would the kitchen lights come on, so would the dining room lights. Turning the switch off would turn off the kitchen lights, but leave the dining room lights on. * The bedroom keypad started clicking with every keypress, even though the app settings had that box unchecked. * Turning on one of the lamps in the bedroom would start the ceiling fan. * Turning off the ceiling fan (via its dedicated switch) would dim one of the lamp keypad switches while the associated lamp's state remained unchanged. * Our outdoor light timer ended up on a completely different schedule than our days/nights, and resetting the hub clock didn't change anything. And so on. Every few weeks, we'd notice another odd behavior. So I called support, and they asked if I'd been removing devices from the system without removing them from scenes first. I definitely had, since the instructions don't warn against it and the app UI allows it. Unfortunately, the back end software isn't so robust, and those old settings were ghosts in the machine, orphaned and inaccessible from the app. Support's recommendation for solving this was to factory-reset the entire system and start over. They claim to be working on a software fix, but it's at least six months out. More and more gremlins kept creeping in, so I finally did the reset and re-programming, which took five (5) hours. TL;DR: Insteon is a neat system, and worked fine for small jobs, but the clunky, slow app isn't ready for prime time--especially when the gremlins creep in, support leaves you out in the cold, and you need to start over.
