I didn’t need to sand mine
"Recommend to sand with 180 grit paper prior to staining" is referring to the overall surface, but I've been a woodworker for more than 40 years, if this were my desk, I would use 220 or even finer 320 grit, 180 is way too coarse unless to are looking for a rough surface
