Product Overview

Kidde's Battery-Operated Wire-Free Interconnectable Smoke Alarm is powered by 3AA batteries and makes it easy to expand the protective coverage of your current interconnected system. This alarm features wire-free interconnectivity with Kidde RF-SM-ACDC and other Kidde RF-SM-DC units. If one unit is triggered, all interconnected alarms will sound. The smoke alarm shall work interconnected immediately out of the box without any user programming. A maximum of 24 Kidde devices can be interconnected in a multiple station arrangement. The interconnect system must not exceed the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) limit of 18 initiation devices, of which 12 can be smoke alarms. Does Kidde have any interconnected smoke/carbon minoxide alarms that will interconnect with this ...

Yes. Kiddie sells for example the FireX KN-COSM-IBA Hardwired Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector with Battery Backup and Voice Alarm. All hardwired smoke alarms are "interconnected" and the trend is to go to combo carbon monoxide /smoke alarms nowadays so effectively this makes all hardwired carbon monoxide alarms interconnected. Now, the issue you are PROBABLY wanting to know is if there is such a thing as a BATTERY-OPERATED interconnected combo smoke/carbon monoxide alarm. I do not believe there is for several reasons. First, only a few states (such as RI) are requiring interconnected carbon monoxide alarms - and all of those are ONLY requiring them in NEW construction and new construction requires hardwired detectors. SOME states are requiring interconnected smoke alarms in older homes that do not have hardwiring for smoke alarms, when the home is used as a rental which is why Kidde even makes battery-powered interconnected alarms. Lastly, the fire code people are starting to require smoke detectors to have built-in expirations of 10 years. The Kiddle battery-operated wireless interconnected alarms claim in the manual that it will stop working after 10 years - but this seems impossible unless the detector has a computer with a realtime clock in it and how is such a clock going to keep time if the AAA batteries are removed for a change? However the Lithium-powered detectors DO have the capability of forcing expiration because the battery wears out in 10 years and since it's not user replaceable the owner cannot take apart the detector and replace it (well not easily, at any rate) The firecode people LOVE the sealed "10 year detectors" since they effectively force people to discard the detector in 10 years. The problem however is that a wireless interconnected detector uses a far higher amount of power because it must power the radio, which is why Kidde makes them with AAA batteries. All of this kind of forces the wireless interconnected detectors into a sort of dead-end. They can't be made to use lower amounts of power because of the radios, thus they cannot be made to use the 10 year lithium batteries that force them to be discarded in 10 years, and adding the carbon monoxide detector into the device would increase the power even higher and make the batteries wear out even faster. Since no jurisdictions are requiring interconnected carbon monoxide detectors in old construction, and only a few are requiring interconnected smoke detectors in old construction and only when renting, the market demand the wireless interconnected smoke detectors is coming mainly from landlords renting out houses and this group is one of the stingiest out there and absolutely will not pay for anything better than the minimum required by the law. Consider for example if a wireless interconnected carbon monoxide detector failed to go off and someone died, their survivors would sue the landlord for millions - so the landlord isn't going to WANT to deploy any interconnected carbon monoxide detector unless they are legally required to do so. Now with all of this said, if you have a hybrid home with some detectors hardwired interconnected and others wireless interconnected, you could install combo hardwired interconnected detectors and bridge them into your network of wireless interconnected detectors. But that would only give you carbon monoxide detection on the hardwired side. Lastly, the fact of the matter is carbon monoxide requires an ignition source. If the home is not plumbed for natural gas and all appliances (stove, furnace, etc.) are electric, and there is no fireplace or woodburning stove, then there are no ignition sources and carbon monoxide detection is not really needed.

How long do the 3 AA batteries typically last ?

Asked by Harry June 29, 2020

Answers

Good AA batteries will last 18 to 20 months. Cheap ones maybe 12 to 14 months. I have found it best to use good batteries and replace them at fall time change. That way, they don't wake me up in the middle of the night chirping because of low battery. Then, I keep the used ones, to use in other things, like flashlights that use AA's.

Pricing doesnt make sense. If I buy 3 individually its only $83. Usually when you buy a bundle its cheaper. Whats the catch? 1 Pack = $27 3 Pack = $95

You live in an older home. I can't directly answer the question. I would purchase them and set them in the rooms you need to monitor without installing them. Press the test button and see if they work. These are really great detectors. You can always return them to Home Depot if they don't work. Buy the value pack to save money.

Answer

Hello Rob. Homedepot.com sets their own prices and you would need to contact their customer service department to get a more definite answer. However the prices our distributors charge can be affected by how much they pay for a particular sku (a single pack versus the multipack), inventory that they have, and marketing to put different skus on sale or temporarily discounted. This can sometimes result in a temporary inversion that causes the single pack to temporarily be cheaper than the multipack. Like with gasoline, prices may change at any time. Also, note that on Homedepot.com, some of the skus have a store sku number and a store SO sku number and some do not. The skus that do NOT have a store sku are online only special deals that are not available in the stores and are often cheaper. I hope this helps.

Is there a smoke, CO combination, that will work with these just smoke detector ?

Answer

Hello. There is not. This alarm does not connect with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. If you want a mix of smoke-only alarms and combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, you will want our P4010 series of alarms, the P4010DCSCO-W and the P4010DCS-W. • https://www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us/products/fire-safety/smoke-alarms/p4010dcs-w/ • • https://www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us/products/fire-safety/smoke-alarms/p4010dcsco-w/ •

Wow, this is a very creative work-around to the limit of 12 per code. It should work, but since we're dealing with life safety here, I recommend that you confirm with the manufacturer.

In my house, I have six of them interconnected together. I don't believe there is a limit on how many can be interconnected; what is important is that each wireless detector is within the range of the one detector with the transmitter that is wired.

15 months! That is all the batteries lasted for these units, with a manufacture date of October 2018. Expected better from Duracell and Kidde. Gonna have to try Energizer!

Hello BACRtc,
Thanks for reaching out. The batteries should be changed yearly. The unit, itself, has a 10 year life. The batteries need to be changed every year.

Installed these in an elderly friend's home. Having a linked/loud detector on all levels of the home feels more secure. Installed 3 smoke detectors and 2 carbon monoxide detectors in about half an hour. I have had these devices in my home for several years and had no false set offs.

Hello. This sounds very unusual and we would like to know more about this. Call us at 1-800-880-6788 and choose the option for P4010 alarms which will get you directly to tier 2. Say that there is a file in the system, first name K, last name W. We don't normally cover discoloration but this is very unusual for this alarm and we would like to get pictures and see what is going on and we can see what we can do for you.

Definitely think this is a great product. Was just had a small fire in our house and while we had smoke detectors in various locations...and they tested that they were working...none went off. I bought these immediately and have replaced all existing smoke detectors in our house. These are easy to install do not require a hard wire...wirelessly these communicate with the other detectors so if one senses smoke and its alarm sounds then all detectors go off! This a very "peace of mind" feature. Another feature is the signal lights indicating which detector sensed the smoke. I plan to buy more of these to upgrade detectors in my rental properties. FYI these have frequency settings to prevent overlap signals if they were used in an Apartment or Town House setting.

I am so excited to have found these! I just purchased a townhome that was built before it was a requirement to have smoke detectors in the bedrooms - it was noted during the home inspection, but wasn't a requirement for financing. An electrician wanted a good chunk of money to install hardwired units using the existing lines and it would require cutting through the ceilings - and taking time off from work. I then considered battery operated only units, but was concerned with the fact they wouldn't be interconnected (one goes off, all go off.) This was the perfect solution! I purchased the compatible AC base unit in store (my home is already hardwired, so it i\was necessary to replace an exiting unit with one of these to interconnect all units in the house), set the dip switches to match the base, popped in the 3 AA batteries they came with, tested them out, installed them onto the ceiling with two small screws and viola! interconnected smoke alarms for the whole house! I plan to buy a single unit for the basement as well. You cannot put a price tag on the safety of your family, but this was a super inexpensive way to protect my family's well being - and I did everything myself!

I have 2 of these currently and installed 3 more in places I am not hard wire interconnected. The setup and install was easy and it's good to have interconnectedness where I need it. However, I really feel they are over priced for what they are. We are past the point where wireless is cutting age technology and I think these things are marketed as such. Otherwise extremely great product.
