Will this generate a tone on the line if the ethernet cable is plugged into a network switch?

Asked by Justin April 21, 2021

Yes, this will generate a tone on cat5e or cat6 cable even if the cable is plugged in to a switch. You will need to purchase a probe separately as this kit does not come with one.

How far can the tone generator transmit and can other brand X probes pickup the signal?

Asked by Paulus July 20, 2020

Answers

The toning ability of any tester is dependent on the cable being transmitted on. Typical transmission of 2000 feet can be expected. Any analog probe can be used, though we recommend the Klein Tools model # VDV500-123.

No, the Klein Tools VDV Scout® Pro 3 does not test signal. It is a portable voice-data-video cable tester. It tests and troubleshoots RJ11, RJ12, RJ45, and F-connector terminated cables and provides tone generation for cable tracing. The VDV Scout® Pro 3 also measures cable length, tests for shield, performs hub blink testing, and traces up to 19 locations.

A huge timesaver!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I absolutely adore these, when I’m in a 360 unit apartment complex and there are 14 lines all tagged with the unit number I’m working in, I only need to make one trip from the comm room to the unit in order to determine which one is the correct line! Two of the huge improvements over the Scout 2 are the addition of the backlight and the built in RF port on the remote for distance measurement. I’ve had the Scout 2 for almost four years and the 3 for 6 months and they’ve both been outstanding!

Great Product!
I bought this a little over a month ago. I had many cables in my garage, that I wanted to test and see if they work working. Gives us you all the results you need telling you if the wires are lined up correctly or not. A new feature over the scout pro 2, is that you can measure cable length which the pro 2 did not have. I love the new lcd back light screen gives you easy reading. If you do network cabling full time, this is a great tool to have. You can also get this to do home projects!

Design flaw
I had purchased this device four months ago and it has a design flaw it is that the barrel on the top will break as soon as you twist something on it because there is no bracket securing it I haven’t really use this device but when I did that is how I found out I had opened it up and discovered this design flaw

Works on RG59/RG6/RG6Q & CAT 3.5,6,5e,6A
This Klein coax & CAT 5 & 6 stripper VDV110-295 is a handy little tool for stripping RG59/RG6/RG6Q & CAT 3,5,6,5e,6A. It strips the RG cables both the inner center copper wire & the shield perfectly, no cutting any strands of the shield, as well as striping CAT cables perfectly. No more trying to use a knife or wire cutters and nicking the inner wires! It's nice and light & small to carry around in your bag or pocket. Comes with good easy to follow instructions and nice pictures (see pic below) that help show you how to set up & use the tool.

So far, I’ve used this Scout Pro tester to identify the CATV ports in my house. I’m getting ready to cut the cord with cable TV and switch to over-the-air HDTV reception. I still need cable internet, however, so I need to know which of six cable runs connects to the port where my cable modem is plugged in. Before using the tester, I read the instruction manual carefully to understand how to check for continuity and port identification. Each of the seven buttons on the keypad has multiple functions, so some initial familiarity with the functions detailed in the manual was helpful. The tester is easy to use. I had no problem mapping out my cables using the included CoaxMap™ Location ID F-connectors. I verified that a couple of the cables were mislabeled, and one of them has a short. For the fun of it, I tried the length measurement function on a 125-ft run of cable that connects to my HD antenna. The tester reported a length of 128 ft, well within its ±5% accuracy specification. The VDV501-851 tester is a capable tool. Its use saved me a considerable amount of time identifying my cables.

Easy to use, Data and Coax cable tester. Does this job well. The first thing I used this for was to quickly identify the four jacks that were installed for my home network. They weren't labelled which meant any sort of troubleshooting or change was really slow. I put four remotes on the four distant ends, then quickly identified which jack was which. Very nice... This gizmo won't tell you data transmission speeds (that would be lovely - but costs a lot more $$$). It will let you test coax cables, jacks, etc., for opens, shorts, miswires, or pair faults. It also supports a probe for tone testing (sold separately - I don't have one - VDV500-123) If you are testing a hub or switch, it has a "Hub blink mode" to identify port location Comes with five (of each) little remotes for LAN and Coax for identifying different remote cables.

Well built with a very sturdy case and the ability to trace a variety of circuit types. This kit is very complete with numbered terminators to identify end points of network and cable runs. This allows one to trace a house with only one session running around the house to insert the plugs and then be able to trace them at the breakout panel. Very handy for sorting out the unusual labels for the wires in the panel. The backlit panel really helps in enclosed spaces.

Not a tool for a handyman put a valuable meter for IT, cable or phone technicians. It is light weight and it has the capabilities to measure (RJ11/12), data (RJ45) and video (F-connector) coax cables. Coax and RJ 45 cables are being used a large amount now in the industry and as all cables can develop issues over time. I have to make multiple RJ 45 cables by installing my own ends as I have COAX cables for various pieces of equipment and having a method to test before installing saves me time and most of all frustration later. I recommend this meter.
