You may want to replace the other two switches which should be three way and fairly cheap @ $1.59 ea. since they are probably 36 years old too. The new 4 way I installed in my house replaced a 30 year old switch from a different mfg. You may want to compare your old switch with new to see if the connections are different. I would guess your wire pairs should go to the same color screws. My connections were rotated 90 degrees between the old and new switches. 4

This item states it is a 4 way switch. I though a 4 way would control lights form 3 locations, but the write says only 2 locations. So why buy this?

This is a 4-way switch and you are correct, a 4-way switch is used when 3 or more switch locations are desired.

I bought two of these switches and once installed I noticed that they do not have the swing movement of a normal switch. The switch in the up position is only about 75% of the way up (see attached picture). I looked online and found other people with the same issue. I called Leviton tech support and the tech explained that the the switches were engineered that way and that they are perfectly safe and good. I responded that if that is true then you must of some really bad engineers and quality assurance folks because the appearance is terrible when the switch is together with other switches. He then got smart with me so I also I asked him to put his statement "they are engineered that way" in writing.... he said that he would and took my e-mail information and I never heard back from him. I guess their customer service is of the same quality of the engineering and quality assurance team. In the end, I bought two new 4-way switches from Legrand that look good and work fine and thew away the Leviton Preferred switches.

The switch works good and was easy to wire but the pole of a switch does not go all the way up. One Direction the pole moves fully but the other direction it only goes about half way. It works all right but kind of looks funny. Fortunately I installed mine in my garage so it doesn't matter much

(What's this)
Leviton has been my go-to brand of electrical devices for over 30 years, as an electrical contractor. Their quality contractor-grade products provide years of service. This is a 4-way switch. When a circuit of lighting is switched conventionally from more than 2 locations, all switches beyond the initial 2 3-way switches are 4-ways. Wiring of such a circuit is a bit complex for the DIY'er, but replacement of a defective switch should be accomplishable following the instructions, which are printed on the inside of the box, as I've pictured. This unit can be side-wired or back-wired. Note that this switch is not rated for use with aluminum conductors, for use with copper conductors only. It is rated for both 120v and 277v applications. This unit is rated for up to 20 amps, and can be utilized in both 15 and 20 amp circuits. This unit is a spec-grade switch, made in the USA.

(What's this)
This is a 4-way switch. It is used when you want 3 or more switches controlling one light (or fan or other electrical device). Let's say you have a light switch at the top of your stairs and another at the bottom of your stairs where both switches are controlling a single light (the light can be turned "on" or "off" from either location). Then you discover that it would be very convenient to have another switch by the basement bedroom door. To do that, you would need to incorporate a 4-way switch into the mix. In that scenario, you would use two 3-way switches at either end of the loop (located at the top of the stairs and the garage door) and one 4-way switch in the middle (located at the basement bedroom door). That would give you the ability to control one light from all three locations. When using multiple switches, you will always have to use two 3-way switches at the beginning and end of the loop, but there is conceivably no limit to the number of additional 4-way switches you could add to the middle of the loop. To add more switches, you would add additional 4-ways hooked up in a series. For example, you could conceivably control one light from 12 (or more) different locations by using ten (or more) 4-way switches and two 3-way switches.

Switch doesn’t flip all the way up and down. It goes down and then half way up and stays in the middle when on. Will have to remove and replace.
