Questions & Answers

can two switches be wired to one inline fan.

ive got two bathrooms totaling 247cfm id like to install the Spruce 450 CFM White Powered 8 in. Inline Duct Fan to take care of the shower steam. Q: will two switches able to work with one fan?? thanks in advance. ordering parts when i find out.
Asked by: Tops
I am not sure this question has been answered adequately. Let's take the example of two bathrooms that are exhausted by an inline fan as the original poster asked. We have two switches connected to the same fan. When either of the bathrooms is humid, the switch in that bathroom will turn on the fan. When both bathrooms are humid, both switches will turn on. Since the circuit is parallel, the same voltage will be impressed on the input terminals of the fan irrespective of the number of switches that are in on position. If you use a 3-way switch, you can manually turn on from one bathroom and turn it off from another bathroom. This particular switch is not a 3-way switch, and if there is a need to turn off the fan even when both bathrooms are humid, you have to manually turn off both the switches to turn the fan off. What am missing here?

Sometimes when you're in the bathroom you NEED a fan even when there is no humidity. Can this be turned on manually when the occasion arises?

Asked by: Nick
Yes, you can turn on the fan manually by simply pushing the button. The duration can be adjusted as required. It can be manually turned off anytime you wish.

What are the humidity dial and the sensitivity dial supposed to be set to?

No matter how I set these dials I can't get the fan to go on at the beginning of a shower and off when the bathroom is deumidified. If I get it to come on it never stops running (on and off, on and off) even though the room is dry. Very frustrated trying to adjust it for a week.
Asked by: Bill
Without more detail on your actual settings, I can only speculate on a fix. First, try resetting the humidity to a setting less than the relative humidity in your area, including any humidifier(s) you may have in your home, if any, or try 40-50% setting. Then set your fan timer to twenty minutes, and give it a try. At first I tried 60% humidity setting, and had a similar problem. Try baby steps instead of large shifts. Don’t give-up you’ll get it.

I have a double gang box in the bathroom for the light and fan switches. Would I be able to fit it in there?

I also need to have a light swith next to it. What do you recommend?
Asked by: Bruno
Yes you can, BUT you may need to add a white neutural wire and a larger wire nut to connect this unit. I did this to my installation and it all fit very easily in the 2-gang box.

5 Amp Humidity Sensor Fan Speed Control, White is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 105.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for you if you have a large bathroom I gave this 3 stars because if you are installing in a standard 5x8 bathroom then this will probably work great. I installed in my Master Bath which is 13x15 and it doesnt work. If I turn the sensitivity up it comes on randomly at all hours of the day. If I dial the sensitivity down gradually and set in the new setting it never comes on at all during a shower. This thing has been reduced to a simple timer switch. We have dialed it all the way down and just set the timer for 20 minutes. We now just use it manually. If you have a large bathroom, I would advise you to save $10 and just install a manual timer switch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly as advertised. Great Been using this now for 5 weeks in my renovated bathroom. Perfect!! Easy to install, really. Uses existing wiring on a retrofit. No modifications needed. Just as simple on a rewire. Works like a charm. Programmable to meet just about any need but I found the factory setting perfect for my application. From the package to working fan in less than 15 minutes. If your fan is working well this is all you need to make it humidity sensitive, or as a timer (both actually). If you need a new fan, this work perfectly too. Truly, this was the best value of all the reno parts I bought for the new bathroom.

As far as we can tell, these switches do NOT detect high humidity in the small bathrooms (less than 50 sq. ft.) in which we installed them paired with excellent Panasonic fans. We manually turn them on and they always turn off in 45 minutes (perhaps less). We have never seen one self-turn-on and we have set them to the most sensitive setting per the instructions. We are probably going to take them out and return them. We have had them less than one month.

It usually happens near the end. Shuts off when the extra humidity is gone. Some adjustment is necessary depending on the room. Needed a pigtail to make connection to neutral, the rest of the wires just connected from the old toggle switch.
