How do I wire this socket

Asked by: Reagan
like everything else electrical, power cord UNPLUGED then, work enough cord up to the socket area till you have at least 12 inches hanging free. there, the hard part is done. now its easy, clip off the old socket about 1" away from the old socket. the insulation should be soft and pliable. clip between the two wires and pull them apart about 1". carefully score the insulation one half inch from the end and bend it to separate. now twist the insulation that is to be removed in a clockwise direction, this bundles the wire strands. bend the bundled conductors into a fish hook shape. place the hook around the screw in the direction you will tighten the screw. [righty tighty, lefty loosey] ya done great !! let there be light

Can this be wired into an old wall mount vanity light

Can this be wired into an old wall mount vanity light
Asked by: Jody
It would depend on the light fixture. I bought this part for rewiring an old table lamp. My lamp had an aluminum "shade" that has a hole in the bottom of the shade, so the stem of the socket, which rotates, can be used to switch the lamp on and off. There is a threaded nut and washer that tightens against the metal shade after the socket is wired and the stem put through the existing hole. That's what keeps it in place. If your light isn't like that, and needs some sort of bracket to hold it in place then you'd need that part - not a part of this fixture.

Be aware that the manufacturer has indicated that the Leviton Bottom Turn Knob Socket should not be installed with the switch at the top (since the heat from a bulb may impact the plastic housing, I assume). With the switch at the bottom it can make it difficult to access the on/off switch depending on the appliance to which it’s connected. Keep that in mind when searching for a new socket. The price is reasonable for the product and it’s as simple to install as any other socket of this type. I can’t yet speak to the longevity of the product but the switch doesn’t feel heavy duty.

I have an older desk lamp which had a broken switch and used this one as a replacement. Very easy installation - there is one nut to hold it in place, and two screws to connect the electrical wires. Not much easier than that ! The switch rotates to turn on/off, and has a nice "click" feel. Just stating the obvious, unplug the lamp before attempting disassembly or reassembly.

Great replacement part, or perfect for wiring up your own lighting creation. I used a couple of these to make up some can lights...literally...soupcans, sprayed with black paint and equipped with these sockets and some PAR 20 LED spots to make some industrial looking spot lights to accent light student projects in my shop's display case. These are a pretty mundane item, but they are well made, reasonably priced, and simple to install. They are not obviously polarized, but if you study them a bit you can see which terminal goes to the outer shell of the bulb and that's the one that should be neutral. The convention is that the neutral wire is the WHITE wire with the WIDE prong on the plug and this is the wire that should be connected to the terminal that connects to the shell of the lamp base. The BLACK wire is the HOT wire and it goes to the switch.

It can be used only in very dry spaces and cannot be used in any kid of lamp that i o. I did use it in a temporary string of lights that I needed to light an area where I was wiring and there was no power to lights in the area. I would strongly recommend that you insulate the area of the connections for safety. The product is made of good quality material.

It was a direct replacement, as it was almost identical to the original socket, so the installation was a snap. The electrical connections were very straightforward ...just a couple of screws, like every other light socket. A quick job and an easy do it yourself project. The desk lamp works like new!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from junk I've purchased two of these in the past few months to replace on in a lamp that the original switch finally wore out in after over 20 years of use, the first replacement lasted a couple of months before it started to fail, the second one lasted a week before failed, never knew turning a lamp on and off twice a day was too much for this manufactures limits.
