I bought four of them for my attic. It can be installed in two ways. If your lamp holder has a collar (indentation), you just need to tighten the bottom of the cage around the collar. Very simple. Mines (Leviton's cheapest lamp holder at HD) didn't have a collar and I needed to attach adaptors (included) first using the two mounting screws in the lamp holder. This process was very awkward. In some of them, I tried to attach the adaptors to the cages first and then mounted the whole things to the lamp holders, which I found was slightly less awkward. It took more than an hour to finish all four.
Now, the real bummer came at the very end, when I put back a light bulb and closed the cage. There was a latch to secure the cage in place and it snapped (attached picture). To be fair, this happened only one of the four and the attic was very cold and the temperature probably played a role. Nevertheless, I wish it was made from a more robust material. If it didn't break, I would have given four stars.

you get what you pay for... cheap
This Leviton plastic replacement guard is a cheap piece of plastic. Other than the screws, it's plastic. The threads that you screw the screws into are plastic... They stripped because it wouldn't get tight enough... so the guard won't stay on. So I glued it shut. The latch on the guard is plastic and won't stay shut. Half the guard is always hanging down in my face or hitting me on the head. The plastic tabs that hold the guard to the light fixture won't stay clicked into the fixture slots. The short of it is save your money and get a guard that's better constructed.

QUALITY TO THE WAY SIDE !!
I HAD THESE GUARDS ( LEVITON- YELLOW COLOR ) IN MY FORMER HOME 30 YEARS AGO AND THEY WERE OF GOOD QUALITY, MUST HAVE BEEN MADE IN AMERICA THEN, I RECENTLY PURCHASED 5 OF THESE TO INSTALL ON ATTIC LIGHTING IN A NEW HOME. INSTALLING THE VERY FIRST ONE THE SNAP LOCK BROKE OFF WHEN CLOSING. ( NOT ENOUGH PLASTIC AT THE HINGE SECTION ) PROBABLY MADE IN CHINA FOR A COST SAVINGS AT THE COST OF QUALITY. I RETURNED ALL OF THEM TO HD TODAY FOR A REFUND. LEVITON, WON'T IT BE BETTER AND MORE COST EFFECTIVE TO MAKE A QUALITY PRODUCT THAT WHEN YOU SOLD IT THAT IT WASN'T RETURNED.

Not Worth a Penny
Okay Home Depot - you got me. I've been had. I was feeling good about the Husky shelving unit; got this as an impulse buy to protect the bulb in the shed I just got wired for electric. I should've just thrown $3.50 out the car window and saved time. This is a total POS. Pure garbage. The "latch" broke off with very little pressure. I had just installed and was "latching" for the very first time. Get these things out of your store and have some dignity.

This guard broke within 48 hours of installation when accidentally hit by a tennis ball. I would not recommend this product. Very cheaply made.

Great lamp protector. Easy to install if you folow directions
Most of the poor reviews are by people who don't follow directions.
If you install the adapters first, as instructed, the rest of the installation is easy. This cover provides a latch which makes it easy to replace a bulb if necessary. really nice design.
