Easy to install, easy to set up. Hears me better than my phone and sometimes even my echo. Great for turning off the lights at the night without getting out of bed. Also good for turning on the lights automatically in the morning to help me wake up with fewer alarms. Also this thing will let you dim your LED bulbs down to a barely noticeable glow if you want. Lots of other dimmers cut out once they get to a certain level. This makes it great for a media room (which is where my next one is going)

Very nice, good quality, and great for controlling your lights while also enjoying the smart home capabilities offered by Echo Dot or other Amazon Alexa devices and even better because Alexa is already embedded in the switch. It eliminates the need to have an additional Alexa smart speaker device that is closed by to control it. Additionally, you can voice control any other Alexa enabled devices around the home right from the switch. I placed this voice dimmer in the bathroom where I can control the lights while at the same time listen to music, sports, news, making calls, setting timers, reminders, appointments, sending messages, etc. and all while taking a bath. Multi-tasking at best! My kids and wife love it because of the music playing capabilities even though the volume is limited, but loud enough and with great quality given its size. Installation was fairly easy and the instructions easy to follow; however, caution must be used with the electrical wiring. If you are not knowledgeable in electrical wiring, get a professional to install it because your wiring scheme or wire colors coming from your wall plate can be different to the one presented in the instructions, especially in old constructions. Nevertheless, it should not take more than 10 minutes to install. Setting up and configurations after installation was a breeze, simply download/install the My Leviton App to your smartphone, and when you open the app, it will detect the switch where the wizard in the application will take you step by step in configuring it and connecting it to the Alexa app. It would be great if the “Wake word” for this device would be changeable to avoid conflicts with other “Alexa” speakers in the surrounding but unfortunately this option is not yet available. The problem arises when you call it and other “Alexa” speakers (i.e. Echo Dot) have the same wake word consequently they both start to execute the same command. Overall this is an excellent option to add smart home capability to your house right out of the light switch without the need for additional smart speakers.

The new technology with smart devices in your home is new to me, but my son has several of the Leviton Decora Smart wifi devices in his home so we decided to give it a try. At first glance this Leviton Decora Smart Voice Dimmer with Amazon Alexa looks similar to the standard dimmer switch and it was just as easy to install. (Note: You must have a neutral wire- some older homes do not) We placed our dimmer in the hallway where the switch was put halfway down the hall which meant that we would always have to walk through darkness to search for the switch! Now we just control the light by voice or with our smartphone. We tell Alexa to brighten, dim or turn off the light. The free MyLeviton app has many features such as connecting multiple Leviton products and automatically scheduling the time of day or night to keep the light on. These devices are so easy to use that my grandchildren easily control their lights, tv and music by talking to Alexa. So far, we are enjoying the ease of this device and will look at adding more.

I've tested just about every variety of smart dimmer and Amazon Alexa device on the market, and I'd say that the Leviton voice dimmer is an interesting alternative, but it doesn't fully replace either. The best application of it would be in a location where you wouldn't otherwise want a countertop Amazon Echo device, for example a bathroom where you want to keep things as neat as possible around the sink, or alternatively a hallway where there's nowhere to place a voice assistant. I've given the product the benefit of the doubt in my rating based on these unique situations where it offers functionality you can't otherwise get, but for other typical uses, like a kitchen, living room, or bedroom, I do not recommend this product, and here's why: (1) it's not a full Amazon Echo - the voice dimmer doesn't come up as an Echo in the Amazon Alexa app, which means it can't be "grouped" with itself or any other lights. So if you're used to walking into a room and saying "Alexa, turn on the lights" and then having all the various lights turn on, it's not going to work with this device. You have to always say "Alexa, turn on XYZ", where XYZ may be "bathroom" or "hallway" or "bedroom", etc., and just the dimmer will turn on. (2) The hardware is surprisingly limited: there is no actually physical dimmer! That means it has less hardware functionality than a traditional non-smart dimmer. If you want to walk into a room and set the dimming before you turn it on (so for example it doesn't get too bright in the middle of the night), you simply can't do it. You have to issue a voice command. The Leviton software has some limited options here, allowing you to always have the switch return to a preset (like 10% or 50%), or alternatively to whatever it was at the last time you turned it off, but neither of these is really satisfactory. I just don't like that installing a smart device makes the physical dimmer on the wall LESS functional than before. I understand that Leviton is trying to do something innovative here, but it made a big mistake removing the physical dimming switches from the dimmer. Voice is not always a good substitute for physical controls, especially if you have some users in a household who primarily use traditional hardware control. For most people who want to get into smart lighting control, buying an Amazon Echo Dot and a smart dimmer will be a far more flexible solution that ultimately offers more control and a better experience from both the Alexa device and the dimmer. And just to answer a question that people always ask: YES, you need a neutral wire to install this product!

          Response from levitonProductExpertFeb 5, 2020
Termie, thanks for your review. The Voice Dimmer features full dimming control either physically at the device (press and hold), with your voice, or from the My Leviton app. To control from the device all you have to do is press & hold the ON button to bright, or press & hold the OFF button to dim. The Voice Dimmer is really two devices in one - you can think of it as a Leviton Wi-Fi Dimmer, and also and Amazon Alexa device. In the Alexa app the Voice Dimmer will show up as “Leviton Voice Dimmer” under your “Echo and Alexa” devices list, but can also be found in the “Lights” devices list. The My Leviton app features many parameters to enhance the dimming experience including custom fade rates, bulb type, setting min and max bright/dim to finetune performance, preset light level (return to specified brightness), auto-shutoff, and vacation mode. You can also use the My Leviton app to create schedules or group lighting devices into rooms to create custom lighting scenes and activities. As always, please reach out to DSSupport@leviton.com with any questions.

The Leviton Decor Smart voice dimmer with Amazon Alexa is all in one and so easy to use. That being said you need to have a neutral wire some older homes do not. Also make sure you buy dimmable bulbs, you can get LED's which is what I have. Have many different brands of bulbs throughout my home find the Phillips to be best. If you have installed any type of switch/outlet this is about the same in knowledge ability. So easy install for most. Download the Leviton app from the playstore/apple. Also a breeze. I like that I can control it when I'm not at home (security). Remember you do not need hub. So, you can ask Alexa for the weather or news just ask this switch to dim the lights! I understand most of these little gadgets are for fun, but this switch is like an all in one functionality and fun. No need to buy anything else like with the smart plugs. Added note I have strong wifi.

This is an awesome switch! I removed the old dimmer and this installed in its place in minutes!! It all went back together just like any other dimmer. After installing, you must download the Leviton app as the rest of the setup is in the app. You must also sign up for a Leviton account but that is free and only takes a few moments. Once inside the app you have to give the switch permissions to use your WiFi network and there are a few other setting you can adjust form there. You can operate the switch three ways: 1 like a regular dimmer, 2 voice activated and 3 through your smartphone. It also works like a regular Amazon Echo Dot and can play music, tell you the weather and anything else a Dot can do. Works great and am very happy!

I'm becoming a big fan of Leviton smart dimmers; this is the fourth one I've installed. Although the other three did not have Alexa built-in to the switch, they are Alexa compatible which means they can be controlled by your external Echo device and via the Alexa app using routines or manual controls. The Leviton app allows you to not only control the lights, but also set many preferences for each switch such as min. and max brightness, the behavior of the LEDs, type of bulbs you're using etc. Thankfully there is no need for a hub in order to use these switches, Installation is as simple as installing any other switch, but as with all such devices you need to have a white (neutral) wire in the electrical box in order to connect the switch. Also note that the back end of smart switches in general (the part inside the box) is larger than normal switches. So if the box has a lot of wires in it, you may need to spend some time better organizing them to ensure that you have room for the switch. The switch has its own microphones and speaker, and the sound quality through the tiny speaker is better than I expected, although I wouldn't want to listen to music through it. Unlike my other Leviton smart dimmers, this one emits a buzzing noise when the brightness is set to anything lower than 100%. That is a little annoying and I am awaiting a response from Leviton support about whether this is normal. It can only be heard when you are within a few feet of the switch so in some installations it may not be an issue. (And it's the only reason I didn't give this 5 stars) Overall I'm very happy with it. There are a lot of other brands of smart switches out there but I'd rather stick with an industry leader like Leviton.

I love this dimmer. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the speaker is not very powerful and lacks base. Does not get as loud as the regular Alexa dot or taller version. That being said, it's a smart dimmer and it does that part perfectly. Super easy to install and connect to the internet. I love the way it softly dims light up and down. You can also turn the light on and off the old fashioned way using your hand. Alexa plays music and talks to you. Dimmer connects to your phone on the app and can be turned on and off from anywhere-great feature. Considering the small size of this device, it is amazing that it does so much. It looks nice and blends in well with other switches. Great smart item to add to your collection of cool devices.
