This is a nice heavy duty socket. I use these in lamps that I make because they have a heavy duty covering that protects and insulates the shell socket inside the lamps that I make. The 6 inch sealed leads give me plenty of wire to work with when connecting to my feed wires or a switch. The wire leads are molded into the socket but they are not designed for use in weather or water. They do a nice job of insulating the socket from contact with metal in the types of lamps I build.

Bare socket with some weather resistance great for temporary install This socket is a great solution if you're looking for wiring up a temporary bulb somewhere, perhaps while you're working on a project. The socket itself is thoroughly encased in rubber and looks like it would resist damp situations fairly well. Of course you can't have this entirely exposed to rain as there's no protection between the bulb and the socket to keep water out. If that's what you're looking for you'll need to track down a truly waterproof light rather than just a socket. Who is this for: Someone looking for a temporary (or perhaps permanent) lighting in a place like a construction project or maybe a barn. They should be handy enough to wire this in as it needs to be hard wired to a circuit. Who isn't this for: This isn't for someone who is replacing a socket in an existing fixture. There's no mechanism (ring, tabs, etc.) for connecting the socket to a light fixture. Conclusion: I would have given this five stars if it had had some sort of retainer ring or other attachment point. As it is it really just dangles from wherever you hard wire it into a circuit. There's no easy way to secure it.

I needed to shave a bit of rubber off the exterior of this light socket so it would work for my purposes. Just goes to show it's a solid, semi-stiff rubber and there's plenty of it - not just some cheap, thin rubber. Leads are long enough to screw up any splicing jobs a time or two (ahem). I used this socket in a lamp I made from an old car knuckle joint and an Edison bulb.

The smell was overpowering
The socket works good. It should only be used in an outdoor situation. The smell, when used indoors, makes people ill.

Inexpensive- temporary lights.
Exactly what I needed to get some light up into my attic. Bought an extension cord - cut the cord where I needed the light and installed the “pig tails” - Done.
