Questions & Answers

Are the measurements for the inside or outside diameter?

Are the measurements for the inside or outside diameter?
Asked by: Suds
For a reducer to work, and to be connect-able, the components that it mates to have to fit onto (or into) the duct reducer/adapter's fatter end, and the other mating part of the duct will fit over the smaller end of the reducer, so that you can make sure they actually physically connect, where they need to, with enough overlap to tolerate the usage you have in mind. So in this case, the 4-7/8" O.D. fatter end (short for Outside Diameter) end of the duct reducer will fit into the ~5" (O.D) of the mating part (the rigid duct). In some cases, for this to work, the installer (and that may be you) will have to use a "sheet metal duct crimping tool" to crease the mating duct piece at the joint zone to make the end fit and be tight enough fit to the mating part, and then seal it with a high temperature resistant tape to minimize leakage (of the smelly or dusty air) eventually to be conveyed by the duct system. If you're buying parts for a duct system, bring a tape measure to be sure. If the measurements you take don't allow for about 1/16-to 1/8" radial clearance (for eventual assembly) of the mating parts, then it will be very difficult to assemble without modifying one or both of the mating ends of each part... Good luck.

how do you attach 4 inch dryer hose?

how do you attach 4 inch dryer hose?
Asked by: bill
Best way to attach the hose is (1) with your gloved fingers manipulate the dryer hose to fit over the end of the reducer (2) pre- drill 3 small (~ 7/64 drill size) holes thru the dryer vent and the end you've fit to, (3) using short sheet metal screws attach them together, and (4) to be sure there are no air leaks, wrap the joint over the screws, with flexible high temperature resistant (it will look like shiny aluminum) adhesive tape, pulling the tape taut, covering the screws. Test the mechanical bonds by giving the assembly a light tug... if it comes apart now, it won't last in your application, and might have failed to hold while the assembly is in use, when you're not looking.

I needed this, 2 of them actually, as part of a short ductwork sub-system for my gas-electric range with down-draft ventilation capacity to be able to vent to a wall vent that penetrates the house's brickwork envelope. It would have been a better fit for the package space, if the conically shaped reducer zone been a little shorter...that it is as long as it is (the component was ~ 11 long, due to the length of the transition zone's very gradual slope) made installation more difficult than it needed to be. had it actually resembled the image above, it would have worked better. As it was, when I slid the range into its spot, I had to partially crush the 4" flexible ductwork it connects to. It could also have been better if it had been pre-drilled for (3@) #6 x 5/8" sheet-metal screws. I had to drill the requisite attachment holes, and there was not enough "elbow room" where I was working, thus making installation more difficult. As provided, this part was not an ideal size...it was too long, and no consideration was given for the assembly steps to utilize this for residential ducting.
