Questions & Answers

5Questions14Answers

can the starting collars be used on ductboard

Asked by bill December 27, 2017

Not really. The fastener tabs are too short to be of much use on anything thicker than maybe an inch. I guess you just have to tape it on and hope for the best.

How long are the tabs on the 8" starter collar?

About an 1-3/4". I don't know as mine in already installed and I can't take it apart to measure. HOWEVER, it was a PAIN to install. Get the ones with the peel and stick seals on them- much easier to install and are AIRTIGHT.

Can this be used on sheetrock? like if a duct runs through the wall...

I used this collar to mount an inline duct fan to a plywood exhaust plenum - I was initially going to connect the exhaust end to this collar and support the other end of the fan with a cradle. But the collar had enough slack to allow fully inserting the duct fan into the collar - providing all the support the fan needed - the fan body was secured to the collar with pop-rivets.

I used two different types of starting rings on my furnace project. This was because I did not know better when I started my project. Now I do know better. The 8 inch Master FlowStarting collars worked much better when attaching the Master FlowFlexible ductwork than the other style starting ring that I used. Both types of rings took the same amount of skill to install in the metal part of the ductwork; however, the Master FlowStarting collars had larger tabs and wider flange rings which were more forgiving and easier to work with.

These old-fashioned bend-the-tab type of starting collars are a pain and do not seal the hole well. You have to go back and use mastic on them or some other sealant- what a waste of time and effort. Use the take offs with the peel and stick flanges- a little more $ but well worth it.
