A: Happy to help, Antoinette! To ensure full adhesion and lasting results with Rust-Oleum Modern Masters Metal Effects, the surface will need to be primed. We recommend Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer. Make sure any loose and flaking rust is removed. Please keep in mind, each 2 oz. kit only has a recommended coverage of 2 square feet.

A: Yes, I love this product! I used it on two plastic outdoor urns and they now look like old, rust urns that cost a fortune. I only paid $35.00 for the urns and am so satisfied.

A: Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Modern Masters Metal Effects Rust Kit is a great way to create a rust finish on surfaces. The base coat can be applied to the whole surface and then the activator is used to create the rust effect. The final appearance will be dependent on temperature, humidity, and the amount of product used. We recommend applying in a test area first to get a fell for how the effect works.

I bought two "green" kits to patina a statue. Instructions were very clear and easy to understand. When they say apply the patina spray on the second copper coat of paint while it's still wet, (I am in FL and it was August and very humid) let it dry just a little that way when you spray the patina green it will eliminate some of the running of the paint (don't over spray the patina). I had some streaks but I was able to take a tissue and dab some spots. It also says after the patina spray, let it sit for 30 to 40 minutes to see results. It can take hours to really see all of the results. I also used a coat of UV clear coat paint to protect the finish in the end. It toned done some of the copper which turned out nice. I would recommend.

I love this stuff!
I got both the rust effects and the green patina kits. The instructions are simple and it's easy to use. I did a simple test run on both of the kits using lil glass jars (so I didn't ruin my actual project) and they both came out great! If you follow the instructions you can't go wrong. There seems to be a good amount of all the materials. I will be able to finish my current projects and have plenty left over for my next project.

Over all it's a neat product. You have one shot at getting it right so you have to work quickly, there is no ability to do touch ups. Follow the instructions. The paint brushes in the kit are junk so be sure to have your own and extra as the brushes are non-washable once dried.

Rapid, satisfying effect
If used sparingly, there is enough paint included in the kit for roughly three small projects or perhaps one medium one. All necessary components are provided, including stir sticks and brushes. The end result is as promised and gives the look of years of oxidation.
The kit actually allows the patina effect to develop from copper paint. This means that you don't necessarily have to be painting a metal object. Whatever surface you are painting requires typical preparation like cleaning, removal of any pre-existing loose paint, or roughening a glossy surface. You then apply two coats of a brown-colored primer within 30 minutes of each other. Next allow at least 12 hours to dry and then apply two coats of the copper paint, again within 30 minutes of each other. Then you spray the paint with the oxidizer Immediately after the second coat while the paint is still wet. It doesn't take very much so if you want only a minor patina, limit each area to only one or two sprays. The effect begins within a few minutes. The paint cleans up with soap and water.
Final effect looks great. Different versions are also available such as a bluish patina and rust.
