Product Overview

The flavor of Gravenstein makes it best used for cooking, baking, and cider-pressing mainly due to its low sugar content and large fruit size. It's also a great choice due to the massive number of apples produced by a single Gravenstein tree. In fact Gravenstein is 1 of the largest-growing apple trees cultivated today, giving it the status of a shade tree as well. If you're looking for the maximum number of apples grown on a single tree then Gravenstein is likely your best option.
  • Gravenstein is 1 of the best choices for homemade applesauce and cider due to its extra-large fruit and mildly sweet flavor
  • 1 of the largest cultivated apple trees
  • 1 of the heaviest-producing apple cultivars due to its massive height and spread
  • Gravenstein is 1 of the oldest apples still cultivated widely today, its use has been noted as far back as the year-1669
  • Gravenstein is an exclusive seasonal variety, typically only available while being harvested, planting your own tree gives you all the gravenstein apples you could ever wish for

No, it is not a self pollinator. Gravenstein requires another variety of apple tree for pollination.

Bare root tree was shipped quickly and was well packaged. It currently resembles a stick without branches or leaves. The rootball was wrapped in hay and burlap. I followed instructions to soak it for at least 6 hours, removed it from the burlap and then planted it in a large pot. I will transfer the tree into the ground once it warms up a bit. The ground in Houston is a bit hard with all the clay. Hoping that this tree will flourish! Sofar so good!

(What's this)
I have installed many bare root trees over the years with fairly good success. This tree looks like it stands a good chance of doing well but since it is still dormant I won't know until later this year. The roots were wrapped in straw and burlap and arrived still moist. The issues I had is to fit inside the shipping box some of the branches were damaged and all of the leaders were cut off at just under four feet. I usually do something similar to adjust structure once I get a look at the tree but now I am stuck with what was done just to fit the shipping box and it will probably take a few years to sort out the final shape I want for the tree. I picked up a Fuji at home depot that was about twice as tall with the same trunk diameter. It will be interesting to see how they compare in a few years.

Arrived moist and well packed. A hardy species known for producing lots of apples. I was pleased with how the root ball arrived packed in straw/hay and wrapped in burlap. I immediately potted it in a 2 gallon bucket with potting soil. I let it settle in a sun room for 2 weeks while awaiting a winter rain. I made a quick video showing the plant process (1 minute, below). Finally, we built a chicken-wire fence around it, 6 feet tall, to protect it the next few years. Recommended planting time is Jan/Feb/Mar and is hardy to minus 30F. Fruit bearing begins 2-3 years after planting, and matures around 12 feet high. The trees typically bloom in April, with ripening in late July. I do have nearby crabtrees, cherry, and a wild apple in the woods to help with pollination. I understand that one tree can yield 30-50 pounds of apples, and I’m looking forward to it!

I am really thrilled to get such a pretty fruit tree online. The roots were great and well established. The trunk was really strong with budding branches. It was really well packed and cushioned. The roots were moist and protected. I can't wait to see the fruit. There was no breakage at all. It has taken to soil really well. I can say this little tree will have more friends soon.

(What's this)
First, I will say I am very impressed with the shipping from Online Orchards of the nearly 4 foot tree; an excellent shipping method of this bare root fruit tree wrapping in drenched straw and burlap. I selected the Gravenstein apple tree for it's two primary features; providing a healthy flavor-full fruit and natural tree shading in our large backyard. The tree was well packed as pointed out above and ready to plant. Being it is middle January I choose to pot plant the Gravenstein for now so I can protect it better from the bitter winter temperatures. I plan to move the potting into the ground around mid-spring. No instructions were included but Home Depot has posted the planting basics from Online Orchards right on the item page. Hopefully in our area this Gravenstein will mature fast and produce savory apples soon!

(What's this)
This tree arrived packed very well for shipping with the root wrapped and protected carefully. It is January, so for now, I have planted it in a huge pot and will plant it in the ground in the Spring. I make my own apple sauce and apple pies so I chose this particular Gravenstein Apple Tree carefully. It is a very good size and sturdy enough that it should do very well. I am fascinated to know that this apple goes back 300 years! The tree looks very Hardy and strong. It does not come with growing/care istructions but I just discovered a page on the Online Orchards website titled, 'Caring for Your Tree' that tells you what you need to know. So I guess I do not have to wait until spring to put the tree in the ground; I will do it this week. You should soak the root in water first. It explains where the graft union (the bend) and soil/planting level should be in relation to eachother. Also the page says to mix the straw with the dirt, as it acts as a fertilizer. (I wish I had found the page before I put the tree in a pot!) I was pleasantly surprised to receive such a nice and perfect sized tree and am looking forward to many years of Gravenstein Apples! I do recommend this Online Orchards Apple Tree.

The tree arrived well packaged with no damage - see pictures. The limbs are green and flexible - not dried out. The roots are covered in straw with a burlap wrapping to keep the roots from drying out and for protection. I gave this product a four rather than a five because there was no information included with the tree. I was hoping for some sort of a tag that would detail planting instructions, give more information on the tree as far as height, shape, when to fertilize, etc.

(What's this)
This is decent tree bare root, they did a good job at packing the root bulb up in straw with burlap tied around it to make sure the root bulb stays moist. The cuts to the branches are clean and do not look like any infection or disease has set in. The branches that are left do contain what looks like several potential blooms. The truck of the tree is in good shape with no branch cut offs or forks in the truck base. I would say the major con to this tree bare root is that there are no instructions or guidance on planting depth or sunlight requirements or best practices when planting. I feel like that information is very important to help improve the chances that the tree takes root and grows healthy. If you are experienced with planting apple tree bare roots then I think this is a good tree to get but if you are not a green thumb I would consider looking for a different apple tree.

(What's this)
I received the Online Orchards Gravenstein Apple Tree Bare Root today. After reading that this tree can be planted in January I found a good spot on our property to plant it. The tree is about 3 ft tall and has a few branches. It should bare fruit in a few years. I am looking forward to growing my own apples. I have had this tree for one day. It is healthy and meets my expectations.
