Questions & Answers

How is a plexiglass cutter like this more advantageous then using a utility knife to cut plexiglass.

Asked by: Chris
Acrylic is much easier to cut with the pro grade cutting tool. Please see the following cutting video: https://www.homedepot.com/p/OPTIX-36-in-x-30-in-x-093-in-Acrylic-Sheet-MC-06/202038044

Is this cutter suitable for cutting .093 thickness polycarbonate? I need to make panels for outside lighting fixtures; 15 fixtures with 4 panels in each fixture. A lot of cutting. Each panel is approximately 8 inches x 10 inches.
Asked by: Don
Yes, Polycarbonate sheets can be cut using this cutter. It will take multiple scores to complete the cut but it will do the trick.

Pro Grade Cutter is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tool When Properly Used I had to cut a piece of 1/4" acrylic. I researched the best way to cut and found one of these tools would do the job. The instructions on the package say it will cut up to 1/4" acrylic and that is what I wanted to cut. You need to clamp a straight edge on top of the acrylic down to a surface with a 90 degree straight edge. The straight edge and clamping surface edge needs to span all the way across the piece you are cutting. The straight edge on top lines up with your cut line and the edge of the clamping surface under the acrylic. Once you have this set up you can begin scoring. It may take more than a few passes to score it enough. The blade is V-shaped so it will slowly strip off the acrylic and make a small v-groove into it. You must get at least half way through the acrylic before trying to snap the rest off. If everything stays clamped in place and you strip the acrylic v-groove more than half the thickness the rest will snap right off. Then you can sand the edge a bit to clean it up if you want to. I did this with this tool and it worked perfect. Great Tool !

I'm giving it 3 stars instead of lower because although my experience was quite negative, I'm not sure it's because of the quality of the tool vs. the nature of trying to cut a thick piece of acrylic by hand (and without any previous experience). I will say that if you don't substantially resemble the burly dude shown in the video, i.e. if you are more slight in physique, your experience may resemble mine. I probably spent half an hour to 45 minutes scoring and scoring on a single cut line, with great effort, per the instructions, and had still not managed to cut the requisite halfway through the thickness of my acrylic. This thing does work, but it can take a great deal of time and effort to get anywhere with it.
