Product Overview

For 18 years, Post Protector has provided simple, slide-on 'barrier' protection for in-ground posts. It works in conjunction with the chemical preservative as an important additional layer of protection against soil-dwelling & atmospheric decay fungi & insect infestation. It's first important to understand decay. Many believe that moisture CAUSES decay. Moisture is not the cause of decay but is one of (3) conditions needed for decay to occur. The conditions: (1) Moisture, (2) Oxygen & (3) Suitable temperature. These conditions enable the soil-dwelling or atmospheric decay fungi, as well as termites & other subterranean insects, to feed on the wood fiber. So the Decay/Degradation of ground-contact wood is not CAUSED by moisture but by the action of wood destroying organisms feeding on the wood. The 'chemical preservatives' protection strategy is to 'poison' the wood fiber, rendering it an unsuitable food source for the wood destroying organisms. The downside to that approach is that all chemical preservatives eventually lose resistance to decay and insect infestation. Post Protector becomes the perfect complement to the pressure treated (or cedar) post by simply providing a physical "barrier" isolating the post so the wood-destroying organisms have NO access to the post.

Can this be installed on the post without the lag screws so that the post can be removed and reinstalled in the future?

Yes. However, they are not a thick, rigid material like a pvc pipe. If you have it at all above the ground and a vehicle drives on it, it may crack or get messed up.

Why does the 6 pack cost more per unit than purchasing individual units?

Asked by pinto April 16, 2020

Answer

I don't know about pricing. There could be shipping costs that need to be covered. I can say, I've build a lot of decks with Post-Protectors, the amount of time and money they save me--days and hundreds per deck--are worth any small price shift. -- How-To Video -- https://youtu.be/G3QEyUBR4PM

I purchased this product recently for a pole barn I'm building at my farm. I'm very pleased. I needed a shipment expedited to Home Depot for pickup, and the owner of the manufacturer, Ken, went out of his way to get it to me earlier than expected. He's a complete rock star. The sleeves fit perfectly over my 6"x 6" CCA treated Douglas fir posts. The instructions are clear and easy to understand. I'll let you know in about 30 years how long this relatively inexpensive device extends the life of my new machine shed. Home Depot pickup service was easy to use helpful.

After a drunk guy in a pickup truck went through our field fence with wood corner posts, I noticed the bottoms of the pulled out of the ground 4X4 posts had a lot of bad rot. So when I went to put in a new address post, these caught my attention and ordered one to fit the 6X6 sign post I had made. Shipped very timely, the product is simple to apply. To be sure of the application on a free standing 6X6, I called the company and visited with a very helpful, knowledgeable person on how to proceed with the Post Protector installation. I am a probably what you would call a beginner DIY and found the instruction very easy to follow. Post is in the ground and looks great! Nice to have insurance that this post will last out here!

Great product and easy to install. After learning a bit more about the 'red zone' (2" above grade and 14" below) where post typically fail, I'm confident this product will provide excellent protection.

Professional Deck Builder using Post Protectors for many years...
Not sure what complaints are about, but I assume it could be people not understanding what a barrier material needs to be. The product as is, is perfect. Lightweight, easy to install, keeps the soil from coming in contact with wood post, as well as keeping the sun's damaging U.V. rays from aiding in the rotting where the post, soil, oxygen, and sun's rays would all come together at the first few inches of grade where the post enters the ground. Before switching to Post protectors, we were using a thin rubber membrane that would be put on like a sticker/decal, just around the posts flats sides. It did not provide uplift protection though, or a nice appearance with a moisture drainage path. And trying to apply it in the cold was impossible. The product allows for better lateral bracing and support, since you are now putting the post down into grade, lowering its center of gravity, and using the back-fill as additional support, and provide the post with better uplift protection than a single lag bolt into the concrete, as is done without using the Post Protector. As far as needing to be a thicker gauge plastic, not so. We dug a few up last year, to add an addition to a deck we did 3 years ago. Even our digging bars did not do damage to them, and we were able to re-position, and leave alone. I have been using the product for years, since the company opened, and now get them through HD, since I am ordering my Simpson steel hardware through here as well. Makes it all more convenient. I recommend the product highly. And will use as standard building for as far as I can see.

Post Protector hard to install
These post protectors do not fit full 6X6 pressure treated posts. I had to use a belt sander to get the post to a 5 7/8X5 3/4 dimension so the protector would slide on fully. Otherwise it would get partially on and jam. Ruined three when they jammed on and there is no way to remove it besides cutting it. Emailed manufacturer but never got a response. I expect the protecter to extend the life of the post like they claim but be aware they are lots of work to use.
