Product Overview

  • In-Ground Post Decay Protection for posts in soil or concrete
  • Simple installation and Post Longevity increased by 250%
  • Pole Barn, Deck, Fence, Pergola, Mailbox, any post-foundation job
For 18 years, Post Protector has provided simple, slide-on ‘barrier’ protection for in-ground posts. It works in conjunction with the chemical preservative as an important additional layer of protection against soil-dwelling & atmospheric decay fungi & insect infestation. It’s first important to understand decay. Many believe that moisture CAUSES decay. Moisture is not the cause of decay but is one of (3) conditions needed for decay to occur. The conditions: (1) Moisture, (2) Oxygen & (3) Suitable temperature. These conditions enable the soil-dwelling or atmospheric decay fungi, as well as termites & other subterranean insects, to feed on the wood fiber. So the Decay/Degradation of ground-contact wood is not CAUSED by moisture but by the action of wood destroying organisms feeding on the wood. The ‘chemical preservatives’ protection strategy is to ‘poison’ the wood fiber, rendering it an unsuitable food source for the wood destroying organisms. The downside to that approach is that all chemical preservatives eventually lose resistance to decay and insect infestation. Post Protector becomes the perfect complement to the pressure treated (or cedar) post by simply providing a physical "barrier" isolating the post so the wood-destroying organisms have NO access to the post.
  • Simple slide-on installation
  • Perfect for both Pro and DIY
  • Speed, affordability, and strength of a direct burial post while wood destroying organism have no post access
  • HDPE lightweight, flexible and strong; 449 years of in-ground service life
  • Integral uplift protection feature with Uplift protection hardware/installation instruction pack
  • Integral drainage feature
  • Minimizes chemical leaching into the environment
  • Attractive appearance-rich clay tone color with wood grain texture
  • Easily trims to desired height above grade
  • Stronger, faster, and less expensive than concrete pier and steel bracket method
  • Weed-eater protection
  • Fits the typical 6 in. x 6 in. post with the actual dimensions of 5-½ in. x 5-½ in.
  • Can also be used to create a removable in-ground post
  • Toll free tech-line for expert product information/installation assistance
  • Item is a quantity of 1 Post Protector

When installing a post with this protective sleeve , should the bottom of the post be set in concrete or a few inches of material that will allow trapped moisture to wick from the very bottom , just below the section incase in concrete ? This is for a south Florida location, where the water level varies from 5 to 7 feet below the surface .

Rated 3 out of 5 by from "Socks" for Your PT Posts The days of 'buttering' your posts with Creosote are long-gone. And, if you want to save on concrete and those tubes, these thick-gauge socks [I measure 5.50 x 5.75" inside dimensions] will interest you. Installation goes like this: [1] dig hole about 18" diameter, down past frost line; [2] pour code-complying concrete footer, about 6-8" thick; [3] once set, drop in assembled post [see below] and backfill with stone [to provide for drainage of any moisture that enters the top of the 'sock'. Note: unless for aesthetics, there's no reason to add soil as backfill; whether you do or not, it's going to be a good idea to add some weedblock type fabric to prevent soil from washing into the stone backfill [and 'blinding it' over time.] "Assembly" of the post is straight-forward. Apply a 'sliding agent', e.g. dishwashing liquid, over the post to facilitate insertion and slide the post into the sock. Secure post to socks with provided galv lag screws and washers. Drill drainage hole[s] at bottom [instructions say they're marked, but mine weren't].

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked for Me! I had to rebuild a rotting 6x6 cedar mailbox post by scabbing on a pressure treated wood base made out of 5/4 stock onto a heavily rotted cedar post. The cedar post was very expensive to replace, After adding the pressure treated wood to the cedar that remained, I then covered the rebuilt base with this product and it worked perfectly. I dug a new hole, since the old hole still had a concrete anchor. I backfilled with a sand-gravel mix tamped around the rebuilt post and protector. The corrugations on the outside of the protector seemed to do well to anchor the post. I expect that this protector will provide many years of service and in addition, I easily trimmed the protector to stick about 8 inches above ground in order to protect the cedar post from further weathering at the ground line and to reduce damage from the lawnmower and weedeater.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from After a drunk guy in a pickup truck went through our field fence with wood corner posts, I notice... After a drunk guy in a pickup truck went through our field fence with wood corner posts, I noticed the bottoms of the pulled out of the ground 4X4 posts had a lot of bad rot. So when I went to put in a new address post, these caught my attention and ordered one to fit the 6X6 sign post I had made. Shipped very timely, the product is simple to apply. To be sure of the application on a free standing 6X6, I called the company and visited with a very helpful, knowledgeable person on how to proceed with the Post Protector installation. I am a probably what you would call a beginner DIY and found the instruction very easy to follow. Post is in the ground and looks great! Nice to have insurance that this post will last out here!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Option to Protect Posts Installed in the Ground I recently built a pole barn and was looking to add more rot and decay protection to the pressure treated posts that were set into the ground. Compared to other options, the Post Protectors are more cost effective and simple to install. Concrete pillars are expensive due to the labor required to install them. A solid buried post is also stronger than the weak joint of a post bolted to the top of the pillar. The various "wrapped" posts on the market are more expensive than the Post Protectors. The sleeves are simple to install. Just slide them on and install the lag bolts to provide uplift protection. If you're having a contractor do the work, just have them slip them on before they set the posts. Quick, simple, and economical.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Idea for Fence Durability Product arrived properly packaged (although was delivered to one of my neighbors instead of me). It is exactly as described in size, shape, and color, is lightweight and easy to install. They slip over the bottom of the fence post before you plant it into the ground. I drilled out the drain holes and put gravel in the bottom of the hole for drainage before installing the post and backfilling with concrete. I installed the lag bolts above ground level so the posts can be easily removed in the future if needed. I also caulked around the top seam to minimize water infiltration, although that was not specified in the instructions. I would assume that this protector will extend the life of the posts as advertised, and wish I had know about it before I replaced a number of rotted posts on an older fence in another part of my yard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Professional Deck Builder using Post Protectors for many years... Not sure what complaints are about, but I assume it could be people not understanding what a barrier material needs to be. The product as is, is perfect. Lightweight, easy to install, keeps the soil from coming in contact with wood post, as well as keeping the sun's damaging U.V. rays from aiding in the rotting where the post, soil, oxygen, and sun's rays would all come together at the first few inches of grade where the post enters the ground. Before switching to Post protectors, we were using a thin rubber membrane that would be put on like a sticker/decal, just around the posts flats sides. It did not provide uplift protection though, or a nice appearance with a moisture drainage path. And trying to apply it in the cold was impossible. The product allows for better lateral bracing and support, since you are now putting the post down into grade, lowering its center of gravity, and using the back-fill as additional support, and provide the post with better uplift protection than a single lag bolt into the concrete, as is done without using the Post Protector. As far as needing to be a thicker gauge plastic, not so. We dug a few up last year, to add an addition to a deck we did 3 years ago. Even our digging bars did not do damage to them, and we were able to re-position, and leave alone. I have been using the product for years, since the company opened, and now get them through HD, since I am ordering my Simpson steel hardware through here as well. Makes it all more convenient. I recommend the product highly. And will use as standard building for as far as I can see.
