Something everyone needs in their work bag. I would say this is perfect for hanging pictures as well as shelving. Very lightweight and easy to travel with. Would be good if it had a small traveling bag. I like the bracket that it comes with. You can use a small pin in the wall and then hang this up there to get your line. I like that you can have a dot or a vertical or horizontal line. Comes with the batteries.

(What's this)
The PLTL320 Torpedo Laser Level and Pointer by PowerSmith is a handy device that performs exactly as advertised. Initial setup and use is straightforward. The unit comes with two AAA Duracell batteries which is a nice touch to enable operation immediately. It includes two projection modes, one for a laser dot and the other for a laser line. The projection distance for both modes is long enough to cover the few use cases I’ve tested thus far, including hanging a picture or simulating a stairway railing installation. The level has magnets allowing for easy connection to the included mount; however, the magnets aren't strong enough to hold the level to a wall, via drywall screws, like a stud-finder. The user manual recommends a couple different methods to secure the level to a wall such as painters tape, push pins, or removable adhesive strips, though none of these items are included with the level. All in all, I’m happy with the level and think it will make some household projects much easier!

(What's this)
This laser is very easy to use, it comes with the 2 AAA batteries, the switch on the side has 3 positions, dot, off, line, The line and dot are very easy to seen indoors and good for about 15 ft outdoors. The mount has a place to hang it from a screw or nail (must have a head) on the wall, or you can use the threaded hole on the base to use it on a tripod. There are horizontal and vertical bubble levels on the side and top of the level. The base also has a adjustment knob for fine tuning. The Level is held to the base via magnets on the level, which works well on the base but if you want to use the magnets on a piece of steel they are not strong enough to hold the level. It should have had bigger or stronger magnets.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
The PowerSmith Laser Level & Pointer is a great addition to any toolkit. It's a compact tool with multiple uses though it is most robust in its application as a laser level. For best results when using the unit as a laser level (and not merely as a laser pointer or conventional level), you should use the included mount. It is possible to use the laser level without the mount, but it's a bit challenging to hold the unit with your hand in such a way that you can read the level bubbles AND adjust the position of the laser line. The included mount has magnets which engage the metal surfaces of the laser level unit. The mount has a threaded hole for attaching to a tripod. The mount can also be hung on a wall with a screw or two push pins. Make sure the push pins are long enough to engage the wall or the combined weight of the mount and laser might cause it to fall. The instructions also suggest tape or adhesive putty, which I did not try. Don’t bother trying to hang the mount from a single picture nail - it doesn’t hang flat against the wall (note that the instructions do not recommend this). The direction in which you mount the unit determines whether the laser projects a vertical or horizontal line. To use the laser as a plumb line, position the unit vertically. To hang a row of pictures on a wall or trace straight lines across a floor to lay out tile or wood flooring, position the unit horizontally. Use a combination of directions to make carpentry/framing easier. Once in the mount, the laser’s “ON” switch operates two different modes: if you slide the switch forward, the laser projects as a line. If you slide the switch backward, the laser projects as a single dot for use as a pointer. To turn the unit off, slide the switch to the center position. I used the laser level to hang 9 picture frames along an 18’ stretch of wall - you can see this in the attached pics. The line is very bright on perpendicular surfaces (at the end of the hallway, over 25’ away), but a little faint along the wall to which it’s attached. But not bad, as you can still see the red line in the close up pic of the farthest picture frame. Dimming the lights in the room helps. In summary, the PowerSmith Laser Level & Pointer is a useful, affordable, small, sturdy laser level that performs a variety of functions. The laser level unit on its own (without the mount) is relatively light, and at only 6.5” long and ⅞” wide it’s small enough to put in your pocket. In "dot mode" you can use the laser as a pointer for presentations. And of course, you can use the unit sans laser as a conventional level - although the downside of the small size is that the "windows" for the level bubbles are small and hard to read. It’s worth reading the instructions. While it’s relatively easy to use without them, they offer good tips on adjusting the laser line, hanging, and mounting, along with important safety advice. A nice touch is that the laser level comes with two AAA Duracell batteries - so it's ready to use out of the box! Note: We received this item free from Home Depot’s “Seeds” program. Home Depot only asked that we provide an honest review.

(What's this)
Just used this to help lining up a stair rail installation. Came in very handy and helped line everything up exact, not an easy thing to do using just a tape measure on carpeted steps. Was very easy to put together and figure out without using the instructions. Mounted easily to the wall with one pushpin and shot a clearly visible line down the staircase at the exact height I needed. I had already measured and x'd where I thought the banister would line up, and i wasn't too far off, but I would never have been as precise without the laser line. This accuracy wouldn't have been as important had i been installing to wood studs, but behind this wall is a cement foundation wall so I needed my drilling to be exact. Also the beam was very clearly clearly visible in a well lit staircase. Near the bottom it was slightly fainter, but not an issue. All in all very happy, and it doesn't break the bank either.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
This review is for the PowerSmith Laser Level model PLTL320 which I was given a chance to check out. The tool is both a laser level and a laser pointer, and is designed for indoor use. It’s a “torpedo” level design, pocket sized and comes with a wall mount holder. It runs on two AAA batteries which are included in the package. Mine came with Duracell batteries, which is a nice touch – a lot of smaller tools come with “no name” batteries which tend to be unreliable. The level is equipped with magnets, and will hang onto the included wall mount (see photos) so that you can get “hands free” while working with the laser line. My first project was to hang a multi-photo frame and the problem that I ran into was getting the wall mount where I wanted it on the wall. There is no suction cup or other type of built in way to hold the wall mount in place. You can hang it on a nail, hold it with push pins, use “Velcro” type strips to secure it, or use gaffer or painter’s tape to hold it in place. My wife had drawn a pencil mark where she wanted the top of the frame to be and after putting the wall mount for the laser in place (I used tape) I consistently found that I had to reposition the mount after I put the laser on “level” to have the laser line go through the pencil mark. I ended up turning the laser on, holding it as level as I could so the line went through the pencil mark, and then taping the mount in place. It helps if you have torn off a couple of tape strips so that you can tape with one hand while holding the laser and wall mount with the other. That method worked quite well but there was a bit of a learning curve in getting there. I don’t think that the issues I experienced were the fault of the tool design, rather it was my unfamiliarity with the type of tool that was at fault. Once I had the laser line in place I only had to measure the two distances from the pencil mark along the red line to drill the mounting screws and the job was done. I verified that the frame was indeed level by putting the level on top of the frame (not in the wall mount). See the photo. Worked right the first time – no fine tuning needed. The mount also offers a threaded hole for mounting the level on a tripod (tripod not included in the box), and has two level bubbles for horizontal/vertical leveling. That’s helpful when you want to mount things at the same height on adjacent or opposite walls – put the level on a tripod, set the height that you need, turn on the pointer and you can swivel the tripod to point to each wall in turn and know that the pointer mark is identical throughout. There’s a switch for off/line/dot. I have several levels in my kit but this is the first laser level I’ve tried out; once I figured out the method of getting the wall mount where I wanted it the level worked perfectly. I didn’t have to try to draw straight lines on the wall or fiddle with getting the picture frame straight – I just drilled along the red laser line and the job was completed. I think this is just the gadget for hanging cupboards in my garage – rather than hang one and then base the measurements of the second by matching with the first I can just project the red line and drill all of the mounts at one time. Very nifty. Fit and finish is excellent, the design is well thought out, size and weight feel solid, and the unit comes with a two-year warranty against defects. HTH Regards, Jim
