It works
This reduces the sound of the exhaust air and diffuses it so it doesn’t blow things around behind the vac. To set your expectations, connect the vac hose to the exhaust with no attachment. You should notice a significant decrease in flow noise. This is about what the diffuser will do for sound muffling. It can’t do anything for the motor noise. I have the 4 gallon vac and I don’t have a problem with accessory storage. I put the tubes on the opposite side of the caddy with the utility nozzle on one, the crevice tool in the next slot, and the dust brush under the diffuser.

    Poor Design
As another reviewer mentioned, whoever designed the shop vacuum with the pipe caddy where it is, made it so you cannot attach the muffler at utilize the caddy at the same time. Shocked that this oversight made it past the assembly line. I own a construction co. and have tried all other vacs but Rigid is my preferred vac. The muffler is a must for me, so this is no small problem. Just bought my third Rigid vac with the previous vacs lasting over 10 yrs. I guess I’m stuck now trying to modify the vac by relocating the caddie. I’m also disappointed with Rigids response to the previous review about this issue. Instead of stating the obvious that the muffler and caddie were poorly designed, they just brush it off as “well... other reviewers are happy with it”

Attachments are not universal with Rigid
I have a model WD-4070 and need a carpet attachment with rolling wheels but the one you sell is not compatible with my model. How can this be? Your accessories need to be universal.

Hello RIDGID Customer, Thanks for writing a review. We have the Carpet and Hard Floor Nozzle Accessory (VT2530). However, you will need to have an adapter to make it work with your WD4070 and that is included on the 3-piece adapter set (VT1755). You may get this through Home Depot stores or online. If you need guidane on how to connect these, you may contact our Customer Service at 1-800-474-3443 from Monday to Friday between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Central Time or send us an email at info@ridgidvacs.com and we'll be glad to assist you. Blocks Caddie Access
Incredibly poor design and product management oversight to miss this. You can’t remove center mounted attachments in the rear caddie when the optional diffuser (Ridgid model VT2525) is attached on the exhaust port. No one at Ridgid thoroughly tested the redesigned product, they left that to the customers.

Direct comparison with a Real Time Analyzer
I originally bought this to diffuse the exhaust (had one on an old “screamer” shop vac and it didnt do much for noise) and keep it from blowing dust all over the shop but after seeing in reviews here (and experiencing) different results regarding its use as a muffler I did a little testing with a Real Time Analyzer. Testing was done at hose length from the vacuum which was about 7 ft away. My vacuum is an already pretty quiet as far as shop vacs go Dewalt DXV10P with the 2 stage motor. Based on my ears only at first I definitely heard a reduction in sound but I also noticed a change in frequency which was backed up by the RTA results. Overall reduction in sound was over 4 decibels however notice the large reduction at 3.15k (a frequency our ears are sensitive to). After listening with/without the diffuser several times I realized 3.15k must have been the frequency of the exhaust port “chuffing” as that sound was pretty much eliminated with the diffuser in place. I also did a test on my Fein Turbo dust extractor and it was about 2 decibels quieter than the Dewalt with the muffler installed HOWEVER the response was fairly flat across the board without the huge peaks between 250-500hz like the Dewalt so it sounds “more pleasing ” which in turn makes it actually sound even quieter to my ears. My conclusion...this device will reduce port noise and make a “quiet vac” noticably quieter but it won’t do much for sound reduction if you have a “screaming motor” type shop vacuum.

Kool device. It does bring the noise level down. It’s simple to install. Just put in the port where it blows out air and done. I have a Rigid 4 Gal. 5.0-Peak HP Portable Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum fits no problem also has a attachment to fit the bigger Rigid Vacuums.

              Good Diffuser-Poor Muffler
Purchase 2nd 14gal Rigid vacuum ystrdy...and the Diffuser/Muffler today. Does pretty good job breaking the exhaust airstream up. As far as noise reduction it's a bust. Don't get it for that. Extremely poor design as it is angled so muffler blocks the only decent hanging bracket on the back of the vacuum. Did the designers even notice this?? That's right, the bracket can't be moved either (see photo). A total waste. What was the designer thinking? Obviously him/her and thinking don't get along. Then you wonder who approved the design? Don't bother with the muffler. M. Wright

Does what its supposed to do
As a diffuser this part does the job very well and is worth the money. I think many are not being realistic in saying that this does nothing to reduce the noise given off of these vacuums. It definitely lowers the noise created by the exhaust from the motor. It would be impossible to lower the motor noise itself without hampering the performance of the machine which I think some are mistakenly hoping this would do. IMO the noise put off by this vacuum is one of the quietest i've used. This vacuum is a beast!!! Great suction, loads of attachments to do any job and extremely well made and thought out. A great upgrade from a Shop Vac brand vacuum.

                  Muffler / Diffuser Accessory
As a muffler it does make a little difference in sound in this vacuum. With an iPhone decibel meter I had a steady reading of 84 with the Diffuser off. With Diffuser Attached I had a steady 79 decibel's. I was standing about 9' away from the Vacuum. Still noisy though. As a Diffuser it is good. When vacuuming dust in my shop or vacuuming Sheetrock dust it helps keep dust from blowing around off the floor etc. This is a very noticeable difference. I perceived no noticeable change in vacuuming performance with the diffuser attached. One thing I disliked is that the diffuser intruded into the storage space area for attachments. One thing that I found a little hard to understand in the advertisement is it says fits all rigid vacuums, however it indicates on the advertising that it is a 2-1/2" Hose accessory item. I wanted to clear this up as there are 2 connector points on the product which is not clear in the advertisement. The Red clip is a 2-1/2" connector and the Black clip is the 1-7/8" connector. You just take the 2-1/2" connector off to make it the 1-7/8" connector to your vacuum. There is no adapter required to make this connection. I like this item but only rated it a 3 because it is a functional average use product. Nothing here to write home about but if someone asked I would recommend buying it. The vacuum I am using is a Rigid WD4070. This is a great shop vacuum by the way if you want something smaller to move around with. Photo's were from my iPhone.

                  Response from RIDGIDMay 9, 2020
Hello H20andSand, While we don't know the model of your vac, this muffler diffuser reduces air noise by about 10 percent. In addition, different RIDGID vacs have different decibel rating and these ratings were obtained with the hose attached to the vac during our tests. The sound pressure (dB level) of the machine likely doesn’t change much, but the tones (low verses high) can change from hose to hose. Most of the high dB noise is created by the machine but, again, each hose and the air rushing through it may create their own separate tones. Additionally, there have been some instances where a given hose may create a “harmonic whistle.” This noise is normally very high pitched and includes a higher dB reading than the vacuum. This isn’t normal for most hose/vacuum combinations, but there’s something in the way the hose was molded, the way the hose ends are attached, the length of the hose, the diameter of the hose, the way that hose is held or is laying, the way the air is moving through the hose and at what rate that air is moving that all combine to create this “whistle”. On a different note, the use of the adapter varies depending on the model of the vac. We have vac models with 2-1/2" hose and accessories that do not require the use of the adapter with the red clip. With that being said, specifically for your WD4070, the red clip adapter is not required to be used when attaching this muffer diffuser to the exhaust port. Lastly, we appreciate your feedback and all your comments regarding this vac. If you have questions or concerns, you may call our Customer Service at 1-800-474-3443 from Monday to Friday between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Central Time and we'll be glad to assist you.
