Can I use this to sand my wooden front door? Does the fact that it's orbital make a difference in going against the grain? I've only used the type that uses sandpaper. What do you recommend ?
Asked by: gypsysoul
Best way is to start with a good belt sander to remove the surface finish. Then work with the orbital sander to smooth out.

Will this be able to sand a front entry way deck. About 200 s.f. Or do i need something bigger

Asked by: BrandonM
This will work, however something with a larger diameter sanding surface will get the job done faster.

I bought one of these and used it to sand some concrete, it worked for about 3 minutes and just shut off. I returned it and it did the same thing to the next one. I checked all the outlets in my house and it didnt work. Was I pressing to hard or should I not use this sander for concrete?

Where you using a shop-vac? The electronics in this unit in known to die very quickly when using a shop-vac.

5 in. Random Orbital Sander with AIRGUARD Technology is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 753.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Love/Hate relationship I've owed this sander for about 3 years and I've gone through several sanding pads when the hook and loop would no longer grip the paper, no biggie as a replacement is available in store(Ryobi part fits) and I use the sander daily. The ergonomics when used with dust collection is good and the stoke seems to be a good compromise between a general purpose and finish sander. What I really dislike and what keeps this sander from more stars is the hokey pad brake. Totally inadequate and wears out quickly and needs replacing or you get swirl marks galor. I've replaced the brake better than a half dozen times(purchased off Amazon) only to have to replace again. This last time I took the unit to an authorized repair center to have it replaced figuring maybe I was using substandard parts...not the case, two weeks later and it needs replacing again. I'm done, going to purchase a new sander and it won't be a Ridgid. If they would address the braking system with a more robust system I'd consider purchasing again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Best sander ever until it dies I really love this sander. The dust collection is beyond phenomenal and it does a great job sanding. Unfortunately after a couple weeks I went to use it and it turned on for 30 seconds and then shut off. No amount of flipping the switch got it back on. No problem, exchanged it for a new one. Fast forward a couple weeks and I needed to use new one again (I'd sanded several 2x6s after getting it initially). Turn it on, and 30 seconds later it shuts off. Cant get it back on. This time I went to Home Depot and did a straight return. Looked at other brands, but decided I really so like this one and so I bought another. I got 3rd one home and plugged it in. It turned on. Weird, didnt think power switch should be on out of the box. Oh well. Put it on my workpiece and turned it on ... and 30 seconds later it shuts off. Really? This one didnt even sand anything before going kaput. Sadly, I tried another brand and it did the job well but coated my entire garage in dust. So flaws and all I may consider getting a 4th.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dissapointed I am a Ridgid fan. All of my major woodworking tools are Ridgid and work extremely well...except for the 5" orbital sander. In fact I have purchased five of these sanders and the same problem occurs with all. If you plug in a new sander and turn it on, the pad rotates some but if you put your hand firmly on the pad it will stop rotating. Well, after a few hours of use, each of these has started to spin at an extremely high rpm and cannot be stopped. There is no longer an orbital motion, just a rotating high speed disc. I have accidently cut myself several times with this sander. Also a big problem is that the sander can gouge the wood item being sanded. I have sent these back for repair numerous times and they do not get repaired, but simply cleaned and returned and maintain the same problem. Ridgids tool repair does not understand the issue. The last sander came back two days ago and the store manager saw the problem and gave me a new one. I still have one sander in for repairs...we will see what happens.

I bought this sander about two years ago, and I don't use it professionally--just hobby stuff around the garage. I don't abuse it, and I use it as intended (flat against the surface, only the weight of the sander and the suction from the vacuum keeping it against the wood). The sander started squealing loudly on startup and intermittently during usage, so I took it to get repaired. Two months later, and $30 out of my pocket, it turned out to be a bearing, which isn't covered by the "lifetime" warranty. It's now been 6 months since that repair, and I've got the same issue as well as intermittent power issues where the sander will be operating at full speed and suddenly drop to about half power for a few seconds before ramping back up to full speed. Again, I was told that "wear items" are not covered under the warranty. I've had sanders that have gone for years without bearings acting up, and I can't seem to get much more than 6 months out of this one. Just buy a different brand.

I almost didn't need a dust mask. The sander does an excellent job in a very short amount of time. I'm actually looking forward to the next time I'll be using it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Has done the job for 5+ years and counting I was looking to buy a 6 inch Rigid Sander and was discouraged by the bad reviews that it received... and a little confused. I have owned the 5 inch sander for almost 6 years and I thought I would look at it's reviews for comparison. This sander gets bad reviews so now I'm really confused because I already own this one and I know it's a good sander, it's my go-to sander. I've been woodworking for 30 years and bought this one to replace a Craftsman PSA sander and I have nothing but good things to say about it. It does everything that I expect it do and I've only replaced the pad once... I bought a new one and used the old one for cleaning rust w a piece of Scotch-Brite. The pads get kind of grimy w WD-40 when you do this and you don't want to sand a nice piece of wood with it. I would give this sander 5-stars if it fetched me a Beer but it only gets 4 stars because it does what I bought it for. I don't believe in giving a tool 5 stars for doing what it's supposed to do. Bottom line.... this guy has been a very good shop tool and I expect it to keep chugging along.
