Variable speeds are useful
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Purchase Ryobi Rotary Tool as replacement for another brand that overheated and burnt out. Was cutting plexiglass for a basketball backboard.

This tool is amazing!
I originally needed it to sand a few things down in the home to spruce up the doorway and another issue I had in the bathroom. I didn't realize how many adapters this tool had. It has some good weight to it and is really powerful for what I usually need it for. The lates project is i'm working on some musical instruments that need some custom jobs done and this has helped me out so much.
This is a quiet tool, suitable for light work. It is light, easy to use, with an accessory kit. The accessories are good for sanding, polishing, and buffing something very small. One accessory lets you cut and another to grind with. There is a speed wheel at the base of the tool; settings are 1-5. There is a black power button, and an important gray button that when pressed down lets you either loosen or tighten the tool's chuck to insert and use, or remove a grinding, buffing, cutting, or filing accessory. I was thinking the tool would not have enough power because my previous experience with cutting tools was not so good, more hobby-shop stuff. However, this tool performs better than I expected. Again, this is for fine (small) work where a grinding wheel can't get to. For fine work, this is your tool. Always size your tool and your project appropriately. This tool is handy. I am glad I have it. I can give it a thumbs up.
Great replacement for my old Roebuck rotary tool from my dad. That one was noisy and clunky to use, and a pain to change bits. This new one is great - it's got a good weight to it so your hand stays steady. I personally like the corded power for this rather than battery - keeps the size manageable. It comes with a good starter set of bits, and they are easy to change
I love the versatility of this Ryobi Rotary tool; it has lots of different attachments to use for different projects that you might encounter. You can use it to cut, engrave, sand, grind, sharpen, clean and polish. It has a quick-change collet that allows you to simply twist it and remove and replace the next tool that you wish to use. Quick and easy to do, which allows you to instantly change to the next tool and keep on working. The varied speed is adjusted to the work that you are doing, with cutting, or sanding it gives you a diagram of applications and speeds for each. Fairly easy to use, put the tool you want in it, and then adjust the speed to the appropriate setting and go to work. I have large hands, so it was easy for me to grip and hold, although it is corded, it wasn’t too hard to move the cord around to nearby outlets, but a few I had to get an extension cord to reach where I was working. I was using it to trim some wall trim, and nylon flooring, both easy tasks, and it worked great. I look forward to trying and hopefully mastering the engraving later. But with so many things to learn, it might take me awhile, but luckily, I have a good tool to try and have fun with.
I received the new Ryobi corded Rotary Tool. The tool itself fits into your hand with ease and the layout of the ridges, switches rotary speed selection knob all make sense. The three speeds give you more control based on the type of tool you install into the collet. The Quick change collet has 2 jaws and is 1/8 inch. The universal size gives you access to many different interchangeable tools available at Home Depot that fit the 1/8” size collet. It has a 3speed dial that changes the speed 1 is 5,000 rpm, speed 2 is 15,000, and speed 3 is 35,000 rpm. Inside the manual is an application Speed Recommendations chart to help stop overheating the tool. The tool comes with a plastic case to hold the starter set of tools and additional tools will fit what you purchase. I purchased a Husky 12 in 4 Pocket Zippered Tool Bag to hold all items shipped in a cardboard box the tool came in. The tool is backed by the RYOBI 3-Year Manufacturer's Warranty, 1.2A Corded Rotary Tool includes an operator's manual, and a plastic box full of assorted tools that go inside a plastic box.
I have a talent for losing rotary tools. I'm not sure why but I can't seem to keep track of them. I needed one and was able to find the cases of 2 others but no tools so I picked this one up. It's a great little tool! I like it more than I liked my Wen and the price is similar. I'd put it on par with the Dremel I had for a while but without that name brand price. This is a great hobby tool to have.
The Ryobi 1.2 amp corded rotary tool is a rather handy, compact, and brightly colored tool that comes ready to use. A nice, basic set of the most commonly used bits is included. There is also a collet wrench and an additional, smaller collet to complement the hand tightening, quick change one that is already on the tool. The variable speed dial has positive stops that are visibly numbered. There are endless uses for this tool but I’ll use mine most for finishing furniture. I recently refinished an antique rocking chair that had more than its share of engraving. I was able to buff sand all of them with a rotary tool and prepare the rocking chair for finishing. Turned out rather nicely as a result, I might add. This thing is light, reasonably quiet and just plain easy to use. Don’t turn your nose up because it’s corded, this tool delivers.
The motor on this seems to be fairly heavy duty and should run a lot of hours. It did come with a few basic attachments that will get you started. I would like to give it five stars, but there isn't a case to put it in. The other thing is that the speed control feels somewhat cheesy and I'm not sure how long that will last. I was really surprised there wasn't a case so you can keep everything together and protected. There is an attachment that goes on the end and a different collet, but without a case, where will they be when I need them?
The ROYBI corded rotary tool is a good basic unit. It came with an accessory package that included an assortment of sanding discs, grinding burrs and polishing wheels. The unit came with a quick-change collet. Also included was a separate collet that is not a quick-change type but is required for the lawn mower blade sharpening guide as the quick-change unit is too large in diameter to be used with the guide. The rotary tool is relatively simple to operate and has a speed control.
