Questions & Answers

can i mount this to a router table

Asked by: woodwirm
I just made this purchase with the Ryobi router table. It does mount to the table, but there is not enough depth adjustment and the springs are very stiff and difficult to make any adjustments. This may work ok if all you need is a straight bit, but to do a bullnose there is not enough depth unless the bit is halfway out of the collett with the router completely compressed. The Ryobi router table is very nice, but Im returning this router for another.

can I use a template kit with this router?

I just returned this unit because there is NO bushing plate available for this unit. I tried the Rockler universal and the holes are about 1/8" too narrow and modifying it was enough of a pain I decided to go with the Porter Cable unit with the 1001 base that has the bushing plate with it. This adapter would be a HUGE benefit for Ryobi but they just lost a router customer.

Thank you for asking, Warf. This router can not be used as a planer. I hope this helps and we appreciate your interest in Ryobi! -Keri

This router does not have enough depth to use with table. Can anybody recommend the router that does?

Asked by: Minter
you can use this with a table. you must compress the plunge and lock it in place then set the screws to set your depth. it is difficult for sure but can be done.

10 Amp 2 HP Plunge Base Router is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 136.

I've had this router for about a year now and have used it for routing table tops for about 15 projects. PROS: Great price. The handles are really nice and make the routing smooth. The soft-start is nice - eliminating that jerking motion hard-start motor do. It's beefy and sturdy, with plenty of power. CONS: Maybe it's my particular Ryobi router but the plunge is not smooth at all. I cannot push it down with the handles. I need to push it down from the top. The bed is really small, making it tip fairly easily at times. The plunge lock loosens frequently. I gave up on it and just the depth and lock it with the nut. Mixed thoughts about the on/off switch. I prefer a trigger type switch for safety reasons. I did drop it once while it was running and fortunately the running bit didn't drive into my foot! But it survived the drop, even while running. There is no dust port so be ready for a huge mess. If you are on a tight budget this is an okay entry level router. Just always keep safety in mind!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use for beginner This is my first router so I don't have much perspective but this is very easy to setup and use. I'm a beginner and not great at learning from reading instruction manuals so to easily setup and use for me is saying a lot. It is also really powerful! Cutting pine like butter and even moving easily through some heartwood that was breaking my jigsaw saws. Previous reviews mentioned the difficulty in replacing bits and the plunger springs sticking. I concur but it is by no means a deal-breaker and shouldn't deter anyone from buying this router. What prevented me from giving 5 stars is the difficulty in mounting to a table. I made my own router table (super simple) with 1/2 inch plywood and the bit is not long enough even with the plunge maxed out. Another reviewer was able to mount this to a table so maybe it is just an issue I'm experiencing. I have to now order a collet extension and they are not easy to find. Other than that I really like this router and recommend it. Can't be beat for the price.

I would say that it takes time and practice to really get the hang of it, but unfortunately my 1/2"-1/4" collet adapter malfunctioned after maybe a minute of use. I was testing a basic rabbet bit on a 2x4 when, after a couple of inches into the cut, the wood wouldn't go any further and the router started vibrating and screaming extremely loud. The bit was completely jammed in the adapter and took several days of on-and-off DW40 and hard tugging. Now my adapter is useless, and thus all my 1/4" bits are useless. I've contacted Ryobi about this issue, but I've gotten nothing but crickets from them so far. I would like to try this machine again with a replacement collet, but I'm not buying a replacement with more of my own money and will have to return my router if Ryobi doesn't come through.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Quality Plunge Router This is a really good quality plunge router. Measurements on it appear to be accurate so far and no major issues with it. I think a DIYer would love this thing and will save a lot of money. Good HP with this one so it should be able to handle the harder woods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it!1 I was working on a project that required production level use notching 4x4's for a handrail. I have one little BOSCH fixed base, I bought one of of these Ryobi plunge base models and borrowed an older model Rockwell fixed base. Of the three, I loved the RYOBI! The BOSCH was a little too light for the work, and the Rockwell scared the heck out of me because it was too hard to control. So I went back and bought another RYOBI RE180PLG1! I was using templates for most of the work and the RYOBI worked beautifully! It was smooth, easy to control, and the adjustment features made it a breeze to cut to the perfect depth every time. I've read some bad reviews here, but I have no complaints. You must use the appropriate speed setting for the bit otherwise you get some vibration and chattering. I did notice that one of the two units seemed a bit more "torquey" than the other, but I have not one complaint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value! I bought this router for a vanity-top shelf project mainly for flush cutting, but it has quickly blossomed into more bits and new projects. The variable speed is a great feature for adjusting for uphill and downhill cuts. Adjustable depth setting is easy to customize upon changing bits. It performed flawlessly. Only thing that would be nice to have would be a port for adding a vacuum hose for a more cleanly shop. Overall, for the value features and price, I would highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No regrets! I bought the earlier model almost identical to this one around 10 years ago. It had the blue enclosure but looks the same. One of the best power tools I have ever bought and it just keeps on going. The 2HP motor and speed control never bogs down and the plunge works every time. Really comfortable to use, too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Quality, even better price This is one of my favorite RYOBI tools. I purchased it primarily for hand carved signs and other pieces of home decor. Plenty of power for ripping through a variety of different woods, easy bit changes, and reliable depth control. This tool has it all.
