In the year 2017, it is insulting that ryobi chose to use lead acid batteries instead of long lasting, safe, lithium phosphates(lifepo4).( 3 year life vs 10+ years.) I would have paid $800 more for lithium. Heck i even used lithium on my last ebike, why cant $ryobi$?

Probably flogging a dead horse, but I just did a check on a competitor to the RM480. The TroyBilt TR30 e is a LiOn powered mower that sells (pre-tarriff) for the same as the RM480e. The TR30 e has a run time of one hour as compared to the 2 hours of the RM480e. TroyBilt says the battery should last up to seven years. My study of the SLA/AGM batteries in the RM480e shows they should last 5 - 7 years (possibly longer if used and maintained properly). Here's the rub. The battery pack in the TR30 e costs $990 and requires replacement by a TroyBilt technician (don't know why, but that's what is stated). The four batteries in the RM480e cost $593 total (not the lowest price on-line) and can be replaced by the user. Imagine the cost delta if the TR30 e had large enough battery pack to run for two hours? I still think the SLA/AGM choice Ryobi made was the right one.

With nothing to synchronize the blades (separate motors) how do they overlap without hitting? Do they not overlap? If so, how does it not leave a seem of uncut grass down the middle of each pass?
Asked by: John
Baltimore, show us pictures of cut grass demonstrating your claim of gap between and net effective 19” cut? Your first picture clearly shows the blade on right (left when viewed from the seat) is several inches ahead of the other blade. Take a straight line between the rollers and drop a perpendicular line between the blades and you will demonstrate the cutting overlap. What your pictures show is exactly how every multiblade mower deck is made. Sometimes with some mowers one can turn at exactly the right/wrong radius leaving the gap you claim. If that matters then with this mower turn left, not right.

I've been using this mower for the entire summer and love it. However I have one growing concern as I prepare to put it away until the Spring: the battery power seems to be declining. When I first bought it and began to use it the batteries would indeed last the 2.5 hours for which they're advertised. Over the following months leading to now (November), the run time has slowly decreased. As I write this, I only receive about 1.5 hours of run time. I clean the mower deck before each use. Hopefully there is a simple solution to this. Please advise.

To prolong new battery life it's recommended you only drain no more than 30% for 1st (10) uses. Check out mycountryacre.com for some great advice on prolonging battery life.

I got this mower along with the bagging attachment / blades a few wees ago. I have driven this mower without the blades running for over 3 miles back and forth from the store on local sidewalks with the battery indicator dropping only a single line of the ten lines on the indicator. Every single person I have shown this mower to has loved it and multiple people are looking into purchasing one as well. In order to store the mower I got a Suncast Glidetop resin storage shed from Home Depot as well (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Suncast-Glidetop-6-ft-8-in-x-4-ft-10-in-Resin-Storage-Shed-BMS4900/203065758). The mower fits in here great with room to spare as long as the bags are removed from the back. There is even room to route to power cable under the top lid without modification. While these mowers are hard to find in the store since they are so popular, I am very happy with it and can't wait to mow lawns with tit once it warms up.

I have a new build house on one acre with sandy soil and really rough terrain. It did it all even two foot tall clumped grass/weeds. First day I did the easy part to get used to the mower. At first I hitched up my cart and went around collecting large weeds/objects from the property and after that started cutting at max height. I was impressed as for two hours it hauled, cut and handled well and only used half the battery. Next day was the hard part of the property, really thick and high grass/weeds. Had it set for max. height and went slow, the blades slowed on the thick stuff but just had to go slow. I only got stuck once in a depression half the height off the tire! The slick grass just let the tires spin, however, I was able to just back up and take a different approach. Plus the slope is about 15 degrees in that area and the second day it used just 1/4 of the battery. This mower is a beast and I now understand all the great reviews!

I've waited a while to write this review because I wanted to have enough experience using the mower. Overall, it's fabulous and I'm thrilled. Pros - Runs forever. It takes me about 2 hours to do my front and back yards (approx .75 acres) and I barely lose two bars of power. - Easy to handle and maneuver. My wife used the mower too and had same feedback. - Very effective in mulching mode. I tend to use that mode since I don't bag my grass, and it's great. Also have run over twigs and small branches and it deals with them seamlessly. Cons - The 'unpacking' was not trivial. It ships packed (very well) in a robust metal frame, on top of a pallet. Not sure if the delivery guys were supposed to leave the pallet, but they left the whole thing in the middle of my driveway and it took me about 90 minutes to undo the packaging, get the mower assembled and off the rack. - Home Depot offers no help in disposing of this very bulky packaging. Fortunately, put it up on Craigs List and found people who could use a big metal frame!

It takes a bit of learning: cruise control is definitely the "gear" to use, as it will hold speed for you on the level or uphill. However, if you head downhill, and it starts coasting faster, it will keep speeding up unless you put your foot on the brake. That unsets the cruise, and you must use the accelerator pedal to resume speed. I have found I like to turn on the mower blades during backup as well. One problem I have had keeps me from giving it five stars: the lever to set mowing height is super-easy to knock out of its detent, and falls to a very short mowing height. I ended up making a small tapered wood block to keep it in the setting I want to use for mowing. The fact that it wants to be left plugged to the charger is good. I just mounted the charger to the wall of my barn where I park the mower. The mower uses lead-acid batteries, which keep the price competitive with the nicer gasoline mowers. I mow half an acre, and never see the charge meter go lower than three-fourths.

I purchased this mower in May of 2018 as a gift to ease the use of an Ego 21" walk behind. I mow my own yard, as well as my 2 sister's house and occasionally my neighbors yard. Sometimes twice a week, I like to cut often to reduce lawn stress. Throughout the season from spring to late summer this mower has been flawless and I've had nothing but good things to say whenever someone stopped me to ask about it. That was until fall arrived and the temperatures began to fall. I keep the mower in my garage (non heated but insulated doors) or in my small trailer when I plan on taking it to my sister's house. I keep it charged at all times when not in use to maintain the batteries. However, and it is a big one, once I began to use the bagger system to pick up leaves, the mowing time continued to fall almost consistently with the drop in temperatures. I got rid of my 36 walk behind that I used to use to mulch/bag leaves in the fall, hoping this mower would be a great replacement. I went from an almost 2.5 hour run time (75AH) to less than 10 minutes on days below 65. I followed the manual and carefully checked each battery on the tray, including connections and making sure the area was clean and no corrosion on the connectors. Likewise, I also took the deck off and cleared off ALL the debri around the motors and deck. The battery meter would only be 1 or 2 bars below full but the mower would no longer allow the blades to run. After reaching out to ryobi, I was told it is most likely a failed battery and to take it to get diagnosed by my local repair shop, however if they do not find any issues, than the diagnostic will need to be paid out of pocket. I decided to wait a week as the temperatures were supposed to spike, and wouldn't you know. I took the mower out to pick up some leaves and 45 min later at almost 70 degrees the mower was working fine. I tried again the following week as the temperatures dropped , and the issues began to arise again. That being said, as the leaves begin to fall later and later into the season, I do not see how this mower can perform properly if the batteries do not function properly in our normal mid 50 to 60ish fall temperatures in NY. If you plan to use it to mow the lawn, I highly recommend it, however if you plan on using it to bag leaves, you may need to stick to gas until battery technology improves to cope with lower temperatures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This mower makes mowing fun again! Getting older, hated lugging gas cans around and the 24 HP twin cylinder engine sitting over the top of the front steering axle on my Craftsman lawn tractor was getting heavy, and the constant maintenance was becoming difficult for me. I bought this new Ryobi rider sight unseen, and after using it four times, ...well, let's say, I'm really impressed. I complete my almost 1/2 acre and the battery gauge still reads "full." It took a few minutes to remember this mower does not have hydrostatic braking like my previous mower, but the brakes on this unit work easily on downhill slopes. This rider has more than adequate mower and drive power, all at a quiet noise level. I haven't tried the mulching plug yet because the standard set-up seems to cut the grass in small enough particles. This new model is well built and comfortable to operate. So far, I'm happy with this purchase. I never would have predicted that I would own an all electric mower, but I now own one...and just might try using the USB outlet the next time I mow!

I purchased my Ryobi RY48111 in 2018 for two reasons: 1) easier on the environment 2) less maintenance. I sold my Kubota lawn tractor to purchase this electric Ryobi. I now have serious doubts about that decision. First of all, the cutting quality of both types of blades is not anywhere as good as the Kubota or other tractors I have used. Secondly, it is a bit awkward to smoothly change gears. Thirdly, I agree with the uncomfortable seat ride and hard seat critique by others. Fourth and perhaps my main issue with this tractor is tire slippage. Part of our property has a slight incline, but less than the 15% stipulated by Ryobi. However, on three occasions in 2018, I had to tow the tractor when the tires slipped. The grass on several occasions was damp, but not really that wet. I ended up tearing up the grass when the tires slipped. I have written to Ryobi, but there suggestion was to lower the air pressure in the tires. That was not very helpful. I never had these types of problems with Kubota, John Deere, or Lawn Boy. Ryobi's concept is great, but the actual implementation of that idea leaves a lot of room for improvement. I would seriously wait for improvements or look to another brand before buying this current model.

Outstanding little mower, sturdy, effective (I can mow light brush & even some woody-stalked plants), easy to use, quiet when not mowing. The battery lasts forever--either the indicator isn't working or I've never even come close to running it down. Plenty of safety features so itwon't take off down the hill without you or cut of your foot. I bought the Cub Cadet collapsible cart & this little guy tows it all over my yard like a champ. So easy to use I can run over to the neighbor's or down to the mailbox, kind of like with a golf cart! The cons: 1) really bumpy ride; 2) mower height handle does slip out of its slot easily & is right where your butt is when getting out of the mower; 3) you can't reverse slowly & carefully--it takes off with a jerk no matter how gentle you are stepping on the gas. But overall a great mower, I'd buy it again in a flash.
