I've been using this mower for the entire summer and love it. However I have one growing concern as I prepare to put it away until the Spring: the battery power seems to be declining. When I first bought it and began to use it the batteries would indeed last the 2.5 hours for which they're advertised. Over the following months leading to now (November), the run time has slowly decreased. As I write this, I only receive about 1.5 hours of run time. I clean the mower deck before each use. Hopefully there is a simple solution to this. Please advise.
Asked by: Gyrene
My mower had a 100% failure after the first mow. My first mow was about 45 min and it went off with no issues. The batteries were at full charge. The second time I mowed my lawn I got 2 passes in the front lawn and the mower simply went dark, 100% electrical failure. The charger, when connected to the mower, showed a solid green indicator, so it did not appear the batteries went bad. Ryobi customer support took 3 days to troubleshoot the electric mower with no success. The customer support team from ryobi was unable to locate a service center around chicago so I called Home Depot and they told me to simply return it to a local store. Home Depot was good, but I was unfortunately very disapointed with the electric riding lawn mower by Ryobi.

Is the Home Depot 3 Year extended warranty worth it?

Is the Home Depot 3 Year extended warranty worth it?
Asked by: KPi
You forgot to mention one very important detail regarding the extended coverage. How much did it cost? In most cases if you have one claim it will pay for your coverage. If you buy five mowers and only use it once then you will most likely pay more than you gained but having the peace of mind knowing your exposure is limited is worth it to me. Many people don't buy service plans on anything and because they need to pay for any repair they sometimes take shortcuts or simply don't repair the problem. If the cost is reasonable (10-15%) of the cost then I would suggest you buy it.

Assembled easily enough, and charging for the first time was simple, and it continues to be simple. I leave the charger plugged into the machine whenever I am not using it. Cut quality is good. I like that the blade speed stays steady even when hitting taller patches of grass or doing a bit of residential brush hogging. Ride is bumpy, but the seat is very comfortable. It took some time to get used to the accelerator pedal and the controls, but now it seems as easy as any other mower I've used. Would have liked cruise control, but can't have everything. I use a leaf blower to keep the mower and deck clean and try not to get the mower wet if at all possible. Big questions I have that can't be answered after owning this mower for several months, are first the battery life, and also how well the electrical system/parts will hold up over years of use. For now, the Ryobi rider gets my thumbs up.

We used the new riding mower twice the first week we received it and we were not able to charge it after that. After several calls to Home Depot and Ryobi we had to buy a trailer so we could take it to be repaired which added to the overall expense of this purchase. We ordered the aforementioned 38 in. 100 Ah Battery Electric Rear Engine Riding Lawn Mower mower through Home Depot online which ended up creating challenges at the start. They charged our card for the full amount (as expected) and after getting approval they also added a separate charge 'authorization' on our card for the same amount. This meant twice the amount of this purchase eroded our available credit for 2 weeks since they would not remove the additional 'authorization' even after receiving approval for the transaction from our bank. So... in essence... they charged our card, bank approved it, and they still left a separate and additionally charge 'authorization' on our card for 2 weeks. We called Home Depot online support and while they understood the problem; stating this has happened before; they said there was nothing they could do and we would just have to wait. Two weeks later Home Depot online finally withdrew the additional 'authorization'.

It is relatively quiet, cuts very well, maneuvers pretty well, and has pretty good power. If you land isn't flat and smooth, there will be a few issues. My yard is almost 3 acres, has lots of bumps, and is a mix of clover, grass, weeds, etc. This mower literally rattles my bones for several hours! It could definitely use a good set of shock absorbers. Additionally, on even a slight slope, you feel like it could easily turn over AND it had no roll bar for protection in that event. Finally, they recommend that you do not clean with water, but rather compressed air--really??? Maybe the water screws up the electric motors, but my yard inevitably has some moisture in it, and that will not come off the mower deck with compressed air. So far I have no reasonable solution to keep the deck and blades clean, which is a significant problem.

Bumpy ride and narrow cut-path aside, we enjoyed it. I really loved the idea of an electric mower. Here we are in the spring of 2019 and the batteries won't charge. It's sporadic. First mow I got what appeared to be about an 80-90% charge. Second mow was a full charge. Third was like 60% and just now, for the fourth mow of the season, I unplugged the mower and turned the key and I only have like 40% charge. I leave the mower plugged in whenever I'm not using it. For example, I last mowed a week ago, so it's been sitting on the charger for a week and it's only at 40%. It's not cold. I haven't gotten the thing wet. And of course the warranty for the batteries is only one year. Feeling really really naive. I've been duped. This experience is changing my entire perspective on Ryobi. I was a HUGE fan. Now I'm ready to look elsewhere.

I was late ordering it, and my grass was a lot taller than I expected this machine to mow. it did it, even with the mulching blades. if you get in to grass nasty enough to make a belt-driven machine struggle, instead of smoking a belt, it turns the blades off. just raise the deck, back out and it usually is ready to go again. 2nd cutting far exceeded my expectations. this machine is solid, cuts nicely, and is so much quieter than the gas machines I have been using. I only use this for the "domesticated" part of my property, I still use a beast to work in the rough. I am currently mowing just over 2 acres with it, and I work my way away from the house for some reason, but I still have a green bar left on the gauge and it will still be mowing when I shut the blades off to return. best mower purchase I have ever made for residential applications! after 3 weeks of having/using it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Year 2 ownership woes This mower is amazing until you replace the FOUR batteries. Ryobi states the batteries should last 3-5 yrs. There’s a 1 yr warranty. Ours lasted for 2 years and cost over $900 to replace and it was extremely difficult to remove/replace them. We did everything Ryobi suggested in the manual but still the batteries didn’t last. Don’t buy this mower unless you want to spend $$$.

Charged the mower to 100% overnight the first day I received it. Then used the mower for only 5 minutes which used up 30% of the battery. Charged it overnight again after using 30% and the same thing happened... 30% battery used in 5 minutes. I bought this mower to mow 1 acre but at this rate I'll burn through the battery in 15 minutes. Oddly, when I received the mower off the delivery truck, it already had 38 minutes of usage on the battery meter. I charged it overnight, and have followed all of the best practices for this mower. This is beyond ridiculous.

I would not buy it again. For the second time, it has become a brick. The first time, the mother board was "fried." This time, I am not sure what is going on, but it is acting the same way - it will not power up at all. Before that, the blades were not fully engaging (they would fire up, one of the blades would weakly engage and then stop, and then both blades would stop). Additionally, one of the control arms is bent. The unit is very heavy and the structure does not adequately support the weight. Also, one of the plastic wheels on the deck has broken-off. That is not normal wear and tear, and the unit has not been abused in anyway. Really liked the idea of an all-electric riding mower, but now I wish I would have bought a gas-powered unit after all of the problems.
