easy to assemble and well made
Ryobi Hobby station.
This hobby station is designed to compete with the other competitor’s version but has a few upgrades. First thing, this unit will accept a dremel tool, I have both and the Ryobi and dremel mounted no problem. The unit comes almost completely assembled; one of the pics included shows what comes in the box. The unit features a mounting bracket to hold the rotary tool and allows for vertical or horizontal mounting and various degrees in between. Once mounted, you can use the tool like a drill press or to hold the tool when polishing, grinding or cutting.
The unit has a reversible table. One side allows you to hold a piece for drilling and the other side has holes for a downdraft sanding table, there is a vacuum attachment which will help keep dust down. The mounting pole has a cord hook to keep the power cord out of the way which is pretty helpful.
There are two covered storage compartments which definitely come in handy, it keeps the bits organized and dust out of them. Although the unit is plastic, it is surprisingly sturdy and solid. My personal use has been when cleaning up small parts. I use this to hold the tool keeping both hands free to wire wheel and polish small parts. The downdraft table was helpful as the vacuum pulled down the dust, keeping the area clean.
Overall this is a nice little piece. Although it seems a bit limited for use. I was thinking if there was an X Y table attachment for this, you could use this to route small parts and designs. I think this is well suited to model makers and jewelry makers.
I have several rotary tools and got this hobby station with the intention of permanently mounting one of them on it. The heavy plastic base can be affixed to a work table using either bolts or screws in the 4 mounting slots. That is the main advantage over my other brand’s rotary tool drill press and separate router attachment. When you need to use those you have to take them out of storage. Other useful features of the Ryobi station are the router fence and the vacuum attachment for the downdraft table. As with most other rotary tool hobby stations this drill press has about 2’ of vertical press motion and can be rotated to angles from 0 to 90 degrees. That makes it easy to use for sanding, drilling or routing. The telescoping hanger helps get the cord out of the way and can be used to hang the tool when using a flex-shaft attachment. It’s a nice addition to my hobby tools for a price that comes to about the same as the drill press and router attachment mentioned above.
The Ryobi hobby station is perfect for hobby projects where exact precision is not needed, but a second set of bands would be great. I love that it also holds the rotary tool at up to 90 degrees and that a fence is included. It hooked up great to my dremel 4000 and makes that tool much more comfortable and safer to use. It does have a little play but most of it can be minimized by making sure the thumb screws and the Allen screw are tight. I was still able to get professional looking results by using a nail set and common sense. My son and I had a lot of fun drilling holes in his rock collection to make a chain of rocks.
This is a Great Item By Ryobi To Have In The Shop.
I was really glad to see how well made this was.
Its made from heavy quality plastic for the most part and heavy duty metal parts.
It is very pleasingly heavy.
The gray work plate is reversable from the fence side to a vented side and is completely removable.
On the left is a vacuum port that can be hooked up to a shop vac to help keep dust clear of the work area when using certain tools with the stand.
Several of Ryobi's rotary tools are compatible and they should be even more versatile when mounted in the station. It will easily make that rotary tool the driving force in a small drill press for you
Unfortunately the small Ryobi PRT100B Precision Craft Rotary Tool that I have is not one of them.
Oh well, I guess I just need to get one of the ones listed online that are compatible so I can get to getting things done with the Hobby Station.
Be sure and look carefully at all the pictures that you can find because there are no instructions, at least not with mine as to how to assemble.
It was relatively easy to figure out for me but some sort of diagram or assembly sheet would be helpful to less experienced folks just beginning to acquire tools or anyone really.
Another clever idea from Ryobi. I have a bench top drill press but I have always found it hard to drill very small holes in a precise location. I thought I would give this a try instead and I think it will work well. I am still waiting on the rotary tool to fully try out but am hopeful it will work well. The tool feels well built and the drill press portion is parallel to the table. The dust collection port is a nice touch as well. Although I think it will be mostly for large chips rather than small dust particles.
This is a great stand alone tool accessory set that every hobbyist needs! It will fit most small rotary tools in the press. It was easy to assemble and set up. Has a vacuum adapter included that attaches on the side. The tool tray is reversable and made for other project options [the kit has a fence that utilizes the tray]. Has two convenient bit storage trays on the base.
This table top station is super versatile. I would strongly suggest watching a YouTube video of how to setup. It will save you headache. Once setup add the drills, saws and tools easily with no wires in the way. The vac area has room for improvement. The base plate has a lot of holes so variety isn’t an issue. Lots of potential. Cleans up very well. The size is perfect for a small workspace. Overall this is a great unit.
Ryobi's New Hobby Station has an enormous amount of features for performing crafts beyond expectations. It has a 2" plunge depth which can be raised as much 13" high. It has an invertible tray for drilling, routing or sanding with an external dust port. The unit can be swiveled to as much as 90 degrees. It will accept various Ryobi rotatory tools as well as Dremel. Made of sturdy plastic with on board storage compartment and trays for your accessories. I would have given this a 5 star review except the rotary tool seems to have a small amount of play once the tool is plunged. Overall it is a great station for your small hobby needs.
