A:Â I don?t know why you would need a self centering bit for broken bolt removal, but there is a set screw on the self centering housing that you can loosen to remove the bit it came with and replace it with any other, left handed or whatever you like.

A:Â Yes- think of it as a metal sleeve with a spring-loaded bit that comes out as you press down to make the pilot hole. The size of hole is perfect for most standard hinges (*not for small hinges/screws)

Hinge install must have. This is my first hinge drill alignment bit that I’ve owned. I have installed a ton on hinges and don’t be lazy and not pre drill the the holes . It’s risky and not the way to do it. The other option is make your marks and pre drill, it takes more time and is not always a fool proof way to get the holes lined up perfect and plum. The RYOBI SELF-CENTERING HINGE BIT makes the task quick and precise. Line the hinge up and hold it and get the drill plumb in the middle hole and drill at a slow even pace it goes quickly. I love the bit is spring loaded and set to drill the the perfect depth for hinge screws. I would for sure buy another if lost. Just keep it in you bit storage box so it’s there when it’s needed. I have only positive things to say in the few weeks since receiving it.

I REALLY wanted this product to work out, as it's a really cool concept, and I drill alot of holes into wood for hinges, but on first use the hole drilled it worked perfectly, 2nd hole, it stopped working, lifted up my drill, and the drill bit fell out as it broke.. grabbed a small allen wrench to back the nut out to tighten but back up, and it didn't work, and I can't use.. I want to give it another try though & might go buy another to see it that one is successful...

Made perfect pilot holes for my bathroom door hinge screws. This Ryobi self-centering hinge bit saves me a lot of time and labor when installing doors. Before I had this Ryobi tool, I used a hinge for a pattern and a pencil and a punch to mark and pre-drill hinge screw holes. After I was finished, there always seemed to be at least one hole that would not be centered. This hinge bit eliminates that problem. The 1/8" drill bit is suitable for #8, #10 and #12 size screws. I used it for making pilot holes for #10 screws in a #2 pine 2'x4'. The drill bit is adjustable for depth and is replaceable by loosening a set screw on the bit's collar. I also noticed that Ryobi makes this tool with other drill bit sizes so I'll soon be getting another that works for piano hinges.

This Ryobi Self Centering Hinge Bit, Part A99SCHB1 is for #8, #10 & #12 Screws. It has a 1/8" drill bit and a 1/4" drive end that fits all 1/4" drive chucks. The centering shaft with countersink chamfer is spring loaded. This is pretty nice for installing hinges and getting the drill to be exactly in the center of the hole. This will keep the hinge from moving when tightening down the screws exactly where it is supposed to be.

Solid product. Accurate, robust.
The self centering hinge drill bit from ryobi is another great tool from ryobi that fits the bill. I needed to use it for shallow depth pilot holes for a cabinet project and needed the self alignment and plunge features. Worked great to hit the holes dead center on some .7 inch Thick boards At a shallow depth so I could connect them to other boards without breaking through.

Good quality drill bit... and self centering
I selected the Ryobi self-centering hinge drill bit for an upcoming project I have where I will be making a solid wood entry door. Never having done any kind of work on doors, I am not sure what to expect, or what I will need... so I tried to cover all the bases.
The drill bit arrived nicely packaged. There was no instruction manual or anything like that (come on, folks it's a drill bit... not everything needs explaining). The bit is heavy and feels well made. The bit can be disassembled for easy cleaning, which should allow for years of worry free use.
The bit uses a standard hex shift and should work with any drill/driver. The drill bit, itself, is contained in a chrome 'sleeve' . The sleeve acts like a plunger and keeps the bit centered in the hole on the hinge. The action of the plunger is smooth, with no noticeable bumps or burrs that would interfere with the drill. The sleeve has a tapered end like a cone, keeping the bit centered in pre-drilled holes, up to about 1/4", in any brand of hinge.
While this tool might be intended for hinges, this can certainly have a lot of other uses around the house.

Ryobi has been making tools for years, some tools are very well built. This is one of those well built tools. It operates smoothly and is a great help for installing hinges and fasteners. This self centering hinge bit can be used with a jig or just use the hinge itself. It helps make sure that the drill hole is straight and accurate for placement of the intended screws.

I'm really digging the Ryobi line of tools/accessories for carpentry. I added this to my collection because I wanted to be able to knock out the hinge installation on a set of doors. It makes quick work to center those hinge screws so your doors close perfectly.
It's impact-ready and it's depth adjustable with the flick of an allen wrench. Not only is this great for doors, you can use it for anything with a hinge(well I mean, of course you can). Great for woodworkers, professionals, DIY carpenters.

I used my Ryobi self-centering hinge bit today on some hinges and the door latch plate and it performed really well, all the screws are flat to the hinge plate. I have done several hinges and door latch plates by eye and all most every time I was off center a little bit and you could see the screw would be slightly off center definitely will use it on all counter sink holes I drill a pilot hole in from now on.
