Questions & Answers

Where is the product made?

Where is the product made?
Asked by: Buster923
I asked this question to: Razor_Back CustomerService <Razor_Back.CustomerService@ames.com> The response: I researched this and unfortunately the head is not made in the states. Everything else is, and we assemble it here, but the head itself is imported from India. We are bringing more and more heads back to our plant in Missouri but this one has not made it yet. That probably adds to the confusion but we are striving to be American made and some items are still in process.

Customer Reviews

5 lb. Cutter Mattock is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly Made Tool The head of this mattock is very poorly cast, sloppy with slag marks. It came completely dull, and painted. I needed to sharpen both blades before trying to put it to work. It took no time for those blades to get dulled when I started using it. My main purpose in getting this was to help me cut out some tree roots, and with such poor steel in the blade, it's pretty well useless for that. But worse, perhaps, than that, is the rigidity of the handle. Though it won't likely break anytime soon, it is so stiff that it slams your wrists mercilessly when you use it. A better wood handle or even fiberglass has a little flex in there that absorbs some of the blows, rather then sending them right back up to you. I'm not sure if there's anything I would recommend this for. Maybe busting up dirt, but none of the root chopping of the sort you'd really want a good cutter mattock for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid quality and nice handle A simple and effective tool. After hacking away using my tiny hand axe last time I removed a bush, the idea of this item seems attractive since I had to remove a row of 6 bushes this summer. The double sided design makes it very easy for an amateur to sharpen - simply stick one end in dirt to hold the tool still while sharpening the other end. The handle is very comfortable and feels very good quality. While you will want gloves for big jobs, the shape of the handle also fits into a bare hand pretty well for a quick job. The solid fiberglass, rather than as a layer, gives me confidence as it is not easy to bend. I alternated between the two heads attacking the bush, while similar, the axe-style end, vertical to what you are striking, was useful for doing an initial break down the middle and the other end, the horizontal end, chipped away the wood easy after the split. I also used the horizontal end to cut clean through stray roots. While specific in use, this tool is very effective for those specific uses. In store, I've held a few other cheaper mattocks and the handle wasn't as comfortable. Though using modern design and materials, the steel on this mattock handled the roots like a champ and I expect it to last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from effective digging and cutting tool This mattok is well-balanced and feels right when you swing it. Both the nose and tail of the head is sharp right off the shelf. This tool is really handy to have around when you need to cut something below the surface of the ground and is a must when taking out shrubs and bushes. Be very careful of course that you don't cut any underground pipes or wires.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from well built tool This is a well made excellent tool. It is light enough for the do it yourself user and strong and rugged to take on digging chores. I used it to break up four large stumps. Bored several deep holes and added chemical. Even after four months the chemical does not break it down totally. A dressed mattock gets through the material not effected by the chemical. All that chopping and twisting with 10 bags of debris (large wood chunks) and the shinny well tested mattock is hanging in the shed waiting for the next challenge.
