How often does it have to recharge? Mine is set to auto and noticed that it hasn't been recharging.

Asked by Lynn May 5, 2021

Answer

The RHS32 regenerates automatically as needed, depending on your household's water usage and the hardness of the water supply. In most cases, this will be approximately once or twice per week.

We recommend using water softener pellet, nugget, or coarse solar salts with less than 1% impurities. Block salt is not recommended.

Just installed this last week. It used a 40 pound bag of salt in three days. How do I correct this ?

Asked by Pete March 25, 2021

Answer

You most likely need to adjust the hardness setting. Use a 'test strip' to determine how hard your water is then check the setting to make sure you are not over softening the water.

Does the tank come with resin in it or do you have to buy separately

Just add salt.

This Rheem 3200 grain water softener is a perfect fit for my size of family. It arrived via truck. Packed well and no damage. The directions are clear. I decided to install the equipment beside the house because of my plumbing. The connections to existing CPVC plumbing are pretty basic. I’ll build a waterproof enclosure and insulate pipes. Freezing isn’t much of a problem in Florida. I poured a concrete pad then installed water softener next day. The compact size makes it easy to find a spot that will suit your needs. It took most of the day to complete. Most of that was preparing my existing and moving the whole house filter.the set up on the control panel was a breeze. Just fallowed prompts. It took a few days to really feel the difference in the water. It’s awesome! Taking a shower and washing dishes takes way less soap. We’ve only had it up and running for a week. But, what a difference. I’m looking forward to all the other benefits as well.

The water softener has a small footprint and has a variety of features to save on energy consumption and resources. If you are not replacing an older unit and it is your first time to install a water softener, the installation is tricky. I suggest booking an installation at the time of purchase through homedepot. We are familiar with the Rheem brand and water softeners living in the North, but they are installed differently in Texas. In our experience the water softener is installed right next to the water heater which is often located in the garage or basement. This way only hot water is softened. In Texas, or where we live, water heaters are in the attic, but installing the water softener in the attic does not seem like a good idea. First, it is another possibility for leaks, and second it would be very difficult to carry hundred pounds of salt up there on a monthly basis. Therefore, we are installing it in the garage right next to the main house valve. We will enter above the main shut of valve and send the softened water into the house and hard water to external faucets (watering lawn). This will take some modifications so we will hire or consult with a plumbing service. It comes with a DIY kit, but it is more intended for an existing set up to replace an older unit rather than modifying a system to have a water softener for the first time. While installation is tricky and may include some modification, the water softener itself is full of smart features and saves on energy costs. It is intended for a household of 4 people and it is programmable to desired hardness settings. It also comes with a hardness testing strip. It has 32000 grain capacity and gives you warning about every 4 months or so to clean up the system. There is a 1 year warranty on it, but it can be extended to 5 years with regular use of Rheem water softener cleaner. There is a lid to open and place the cleaner and use the cleaning feature when the system gives you the warning "clean" on the display and blue status light flashing slowly. You will also know when it is time to add salt when the blue status light flashes slowly indicating a low salt level. Overall, the soft water feels great when you are showering and you may never want to step out. The unit is user friendly and easy to program giving you a variety of options and adapts to your needs, such as the customizable water hardness level with the blending valve.

Softener arrived in a heavy protective cardboard box. Unit is clean looking and should look good wherever installed. The opening for adding salt is large which I really appreciate. To remove the top, place fingers inside the back of the housing, pull toward you and lift up. Installed it in the mechanical room, a rather tight space with a furnace and water heater. Installation was easy as the manifold for my old unit is identical to this one eliminating plumbing modifications. Okay I was lazy, I call it conserving energy. I raised it 4 ¼ inches on a wooden platform, slid it into place and connected it to the manifold with the included clips. Set up was simple, set the clock, select type of salt, time to regenerate, salt level and water hardness. Then add salt and three gallons of water and set to regenerate now. Job done. I made a dip-stick to check the remaining tank salt in the future. Four days after installation the water is soft, wielding lots of suds in the kitchen sink and bath. At some point you may discover water is no longer soft but there's plenty of salt in the tank, one of two things can be wrong. 1: You have a salt bridge and water no longer reaches salt. You only need to break the bridge to get the salt back into the water. I've only experienced this twice in over 53 years of having a softner. 2: There is an obstruction in the nozzle venturi area. This may happen several times during the life of the unit. This procedure is a bit more complicated. First put the softener in bypass mode. Remove cover and locate the nozzle venturi housing on the left side of the head unit. Unscrew the top and remove the contents while carefully noting the order of placement. Make sure the small screens are clean. There are two small flow plugs with very small holes in the center, make sure they are open and not plugged. These being clogged has always been the problem I have had. Ensure the flow plugs are reinstalled with the concave side down. Once reassembled don't forget to put the bypass valve back in service position. Been there done that. Enjoy your softened water.

This Rheem Softener is an excellent choice and a good price. It will provide ample soft water for an average family of four. The softener is compact is size. It has a large easy to fill tank. The softener adjusts to your family's water usage which saves on salt. You have the option to adjust the settings to the hardness level. The kit came with a test strip to assist you with setting the softening level. Installation only took about 30 minutes. Looking forward to using less soap products & getting better cleaning results now that i have this softener.

We’ve had water softeners at our previous two homes and after watching mineral build-up form on every fixture in our new house, decided we wanted one here as well. But – we didn’t want to spend the $2000 - $4000 some of the local companies said it would cost so loooked for some less expensive options and found this one at Home Depot. This Rheem 32,000 grain softener has adequate capacity for our house, but they do make a larger (42,000 grain) version for larger households. It’s been “online” now for a few days although it took a couple of days to flush all the hard water out of the water heaters. And it works just like the ones that cost about 10 times more. The photos show a temporary installation – we’re going to add whole house water filtration and put everything inside a resin storage cabinet to protect it from the weather, but for now it's just the softener sitting out by the fence. You'll need an electrical outlet, a place for the discharge (salty water) to drain into, and of course access to the main water supply line to the house. There is a built in bypass valve, but you will need to buy all the pipe and fittings if you install it yourself. In / out connections are plastic 1" threaded male. The softener has several nice features, including tank light, “learning technology” to reduce salt and water usage, resin agitator, and an excellent product warranty which can be extended if you regularly use Rheem water softener cleaner. True water softeners – the ones that use salt and resin beads to remove minerals – all do the same thing and work the same way. These Rheem softeners have a small footprint, impressive features, and in many situations can be a DIY project. Bottom line is you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars for a really good water softener.

We are very pleased with the soft water this is providing. We preferred to use a plumber to install the unit for convenience, as our garage area was pretty complicated and the old connection from our previous softener was not straight for forward. We highly recommend this unit.
