      Answer This Question

We're happy to help, Thomas. Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Chain Link Fence Paint should only be applied using a high-quality brush or extra-long nap (1-1½ inch) lamb’s wool roller. We do not recommend applying by dipping the surface into the paint. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Can regular oil based paint be used to cover this product?
        ByMar 31, 2025
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

That is an interesting question! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Chain Link Fence Paint is designed to adhere to galvanized chain link fencing and provide a chip-resistant, long-lasting finish. One coat will extend the life of the fence and restore an attractive appearance. If you want to apply another oil-based paint over this coating, you can after 24 hours. If you would prefer to paint your galvanized fencing with a different oil-based paint other than the Chain Link Fence Paint, we would recommend priming the fence with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Brush On Primer and then, after 1 hour, apply your first coat of oil-based paint. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-1-Gal-White-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-2001/100398391 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

The results were so startling (in a good way) that neighbors have been stopping by to comment on my new fence. I will upload two before and two after photos. On initial application, the results are much shinier than a new fence, but I am so happy with the results it is amazing. I anticipate that this will extend the life of the fence. Couple of things to note. I did not ask them to shake it the pain; I should have. It easily too me me 10 to 20 minutes to mix each can using a paint stick. I had to be very careful while stirring the paint because the solids on the bottom were so thick and solid. Even if you have an attachment for a hand drill, use the stick first to break things up. The can recommends that you use a 1.5" wool nap roller. The largest sold by Home Depot is 1.25". I purchased the 1.5" wool nap roller. Although I did not try the smaller roller, the 1.25" will probably work but based on my usage with the 1.5", I recommend that you follow the instructions on the can. If you do go for the smaller nap, stay with wool. Use the roller first, then get the things that you missed with a brush. I started with a brush, and for the gates with the fancy stuff, perhaps that was best, but, I could have saved a large amount of time if I had used the roller first then followed up with the brush. I was not able to get the bottom part of the bar with the roller, for example. Decide how close to the ground you want to go and then be sure to clear the grass and plants out of the way. I used a pressure washer and that removed from things growing on the fence (moss maybe). You will need to roll both sides of the fence. Be careful around things such as hinges. You do not want paint in your hinges or movable things. That is bad.

                  Propane Tank
I miss used this product. In the Q&A here, the manufacturer recommends it for only chain link fences. I have a new, 120 gallon propane tank on my property. These tanks are supposed to be light in color, usually white or silver. Some states have rules. Mine came in a light gray primer, almost white, with a blue cap. It was ugly. After brushing the tank off with a broom, I gave it a quick scrub with a coarse sanding sponge to finish cleaning. I used a small 3 inch roller to handle the curves and a small touch up brush. It took very little time, and the result is beautiful. Humidity was just over 60% and the temperature was in the low 80s, so I was able to reattach the cap the next morning. I used less than a quarter of the gallon and am delighted.

Paint is very thin but covers very nicely. We used a paint mitt rather than a roller to avoid the splashing a roller does. We got compliments on the way it turned out.

Completely renewed the Old, Rusted Chain Link Fence around the pool of our new home. I used for all Posts, Gates, and any other Galvanized Steel materials. My actual fencing is Vinyl Coated (white) so I didn't have to use on actual fencing. The coverage of this stuff is amazing!!! It's very watery since it's a metallic paint, but that's perfect for dealing with the awkward corner, crevasses, and painting angles that you come across when painting a chain link fence. I def recommend this product (another great one by Rustoleum).

                    One Coat
My fence is probably 30 years old and had significant surface rust. I prepped with mineral spirits, primed with Rustoleum rusty metal primer, and then applied this paint with a 3/4" roller and 2" brushes. It took about 1.75 gallons of paint (and nearly the same amount of primer) to cover 150 linear feet of chain link fencing. This painted covered excellent in one coat, but that was probably because I prepped and primed before hand. I had a helper and it still took 8 hours to do the painting alone.

                    This is a good title
This is a good product. It covers good with a long nap roller, there are places next to the pipes that need to be touched up with a brush. I got better coverage than they said I would.
