Not like it used to be
Haven’t used this textured paint in a few years but I remembered how well it worked on my last project. Unfortunately, this product seems to have gone downhill. This stuff is like tinted water. I can see I’m going to need several cans instead of just one. I kept shaking the can thinking it wasn’t mixed but that wasn’t the case. Last time I used this type, I could see the texture in the first coat. Not this year. This project is going to cost a lot more than originally planned.

Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this, Murphy! When applying Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Multicolor Textured Spray Paint, hold the can 10-16" from the surface and spray in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. For the best finish, we recommend applying two or more light coats a few minutes apart. Doing this should ensure coverage of 10-12 square feet per can.

Bad quality
I bought a box of 6, thinking I have enough for repainting a small table saw. One can will cover about 2sqfoot max. It's not covering bare metal very good. Using as directed, it spays uneven and sometimes clogging up the nozzle. No good.

Let's see what we can figure out. The labeled directions on our Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Textured Spray Paint has some great information on how to improve coverage on bare metal. Use of Stops Rust Primer provides added corrosion protection, superior adhesion and hiding and is especially recommended for bare wood and metal. A base coat of a similar color will aid in coverage. For best results, be sure to read the product label instructions carefully prior to applying.

Low paint volume for the price.it took 6 cans for a project that should have taken 2 cans of regular spray paint.
Great end result, goodlooking finish.

I’m not the typical use case for this item, but...
I’m not the typical use case for this item, but I figured I’d weigh in in case anyone else is like me. But to start: I did not have issues with a blocked nozzle or patchiness like others have said.
I bought this to make a faux brick wall for a Halloween prop. I tried it first on some styrofoam— the kind that’s sort of unfinished, bumpy rather than shiny and smooth. Not surprisingly, it melted the foam. I tried the same material with some acrylic paint as a barrier. Way less melting.
I tried it on cardboard next. Not a great look. The texture is pretty fine, so the coverage for a Brick look would require 4 or 5 coats I think.
Someone else mentioned, this is for the texture not color and I agree. You need a base of whatever you want underneath. Like you can’t turn a white piece of furniture bronze with this unless you’re doing a ton of coats.

Rust-Oleum multicolor textured spray paint
Used to texture cheep fender skirts. Keep a rag handy, something white/clear, builds up quickly on the spray tip then drips into your surface leaving an untextured spot. Be prepared to do 2 light costs. I then went over them with 3/4 light costs of Rust-Oleum trim and bumper to make black again. After some trial and error project turned out pretty good.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the coverage with this textured spray is less than what you'd expect, but the results are beautiful! We used it to give a little texture and dimension to a metal beam we left exposed in our basement. We started by giving the beam a couple of coats of flat black Rustoleum spray paint prior to adding the textured paint. It took 4 cans to coat the exposed parts of the beam with a nice, consistent finish. It looks a lot like the black granite we used in our bar area and coordinates nicely with the brick walls. The results are well worth the effort!
