Questions & Answers

Can you spray this on rock?
ByJul 31, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Thank you for the interest, Hayes! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Textured Spray Paint can be applied to metal, wood, concrete and masonry, like rocks. We recommend cleaning the surface with a degreasing detergent before applying the paint. For the best adhesion, prime the rocks first with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-Plus-13-oz-Gray-Interior-Exterior-Primer-Spray-293740/206033308 — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

    Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out, Doug. No, Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Textured Spray Paint cannot be applied to rubber surfaces. The paint will not properly adhere or cure if applied to rubber. We do not currently offer a product suitable for this kind of project. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Can this paint be used on outdoor canvas?
      ByMay 8, 2026
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Happy to clarify, Sarita. Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Textured Spray Paint cannot be used on canvas. It dries to a rigid coating and would start to crack and peel as the canvas flexed. Currently, we do not have a coating suitable for use on canvas. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Can i use this on thick plastic (like an outdoor chair)
        ByJan 21, 2026

        Answer This Question

Kris, this is a great question! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Textured Spray Paint cannot be applied directly to plastic and will not adhere correctly. Though we can recommend applying a primer to help achieve the best adhesion. The one we recommend using is Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Universal Bonding Primer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-12-oz-Universal-Bonding-Primer-Spray-6-Pack-285011/205926957 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

            Answer This Question

Thank you for your interest! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Textured Spray Paint cannot be directly applied to a molded plastic surface. You would first need a primer for plastic. To see if we have one for you, we'd like to collect some additional information about your application. Please give us a call at 800-481-4785. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Would it be ideal to use this as a base coat, after Primer, before applying Rust oleum : Bleached Stone spray paint, on High density fiber board? instructions on Stone can says for best Hiding Result “apply basecoat of a color that blends well with stone”

              Answer This Question

Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Textured Spray Paint is not an opaque coating, and we do not recommend it as a basecoat for our stone or textured sprays. We recommend using a similar color from the Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint line instead. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Painter-s-Touch-2X-12-oz-High-Gloss-White-Sand-Ultra-Cover-General-Purpose-Spray-Paint-Case-of-6-348856/326652748 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Thank you for reaching out, Luis. While Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Textured Spray Paint can be used on a variety of surfaces, it will not properly adhere to fiberglass. We recommend first priming the surface using Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Universal Bonding Primer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-12-oz-Universal-Bonding-Primer-Spray-6-Pack-285011/205926957 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Do NOT use on interior corners
The particles come out very small, more like specs of dirt, and somewhat dry, so that if you have interior corners (at the intersection of 2 semi-facing adjacent walls) that you paint, the particles seem to be attracted there (electrostatically I guess?). The result is this weird phenomenon where it's extra thick there (see attached photo), while thinner in the broad open spaces even if you focus the spray on those broad open spaces. Also it just looks like dirt. Little specks of dirt. My recommendation is to go with the "stone" product of rustoleum paint (says "Stone" in big letters) ...For example the pebble color. That product comes out of the nozzle which is a special nozzle and larger blobs and is a little more artistic and sticks to where it lands. Also if you do this either one paint your surface the general color you want it to be before you do this process. Don't rely on the spray to fill all the color in. If you do that be prepared as it will take many more cans and will be much darker than the sample on the paint can cap.

Thanks for the feedback on Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Multicolor Textured Spray Paint. It is recommended, for best results, to spray the surface with a similar color before applying the multicolor textured spray paint.

I love the textured look! The paint quality is exceptional, however the area coverage is not …. I had to buy twice as much of this textured paint as the original, satin finish.

The paint is good durable and the color is great. My only issur is that it take 3 cans of this paint to cover the same area as 1 can of primer, It is thick and buy more than you think you need
                    by
Used the product to update some resin lawn art. Liked the look and finish. The lawn art ended up looking like it was made of sandstone. I ended up top coating it with clear to give it better weather resistance. The only downside was that the coverage was much lower than expected.

Lid matched the texture but not the color.
Refinished an old folding table with metal frame and particle board top. I tried to keep the old look with color matching as close to original, as possible. For the metal frame, I used Cranberry gloss paint&primer and also sprayed the top of the particle board as well to serve as a primer - also added some leftover black paint. I then masked everything off and sprayed a can of textured Rustic Umber on the particle board and was very disappointed. I used the whole can, texture was all I got, no real color to speak of. See photos of the 2 table top panels after using the whole can. I had to go back to the store and bought a second can of Textured Rustic Umber and a can of Chestnut Brown satin to serve as a base coat and to cover up the cranberry and black paint. After laying down the brown paint first, I used a new can of Rustic Umber textured and finally got the desired results. The textured paint, at $10 a can, is not cheap. Wish I knew I needed to add color down first. Still happy, the finished table came out looking great.

                      Single stream of paint
After shaking can for a few minutes, the paint came out in a single stream not a broad spray. Kept shaking and halfway through project can clogged. Cleaned out nozzle and managed to get a single coverage. Not a perfect job but rustic is ok. Wouldn’t use this particular product again, too expensive and not easy to use.

I love the color but the stated coverage for each can (Spray paint covers up to 6 sq. ft. per can) is not accurate. It took almost 4 cans to do the top of a side table that is 22" X 25".

                        Very disappointed
Disappointing. I thought this would be a blackish paint with texture, but it's more like a clear coat with a small amt of pigmented particles. I've used spray paint for years, so I know how to use it. When I sprayed this on my table, it looked like a clear coat! I shook the can again and sprayed it on the dropcloth and then my hand--mostly clear! I was trying to cover a coat of reddish brown primer, and it took a whole can to cover a 12" round "mesh" table top, and even then, not completely.

Not like it used to be
Haven’t used this textured paint in a few years but I remembered how well it worked on my last project. Unfortunately, this product seems to have gone downhill. This stuff is like tinted water. I can see I’m going to need several cans instead of just one. I kept shaking the can thinking it wasn’t mixed but that wasn’t the case. Last time I used this type, I could see the texture in the first coat. Not this year. This project is going to cost a lot more than originally planned.

Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this, Murphy! When applying Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Multicolor Textured Spray Paint, hold the can 10-16" from the surface and spray in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. For the best finish, we recommend applying two or more light coats a few minutes apart. Doing this should ensure coverage of 10-12 square feet per can.
