Questions & Answers

fit any other brand router

can this unit fit any other brand router like bosh or hitachi ?
Asked by: bksj
These bits have a univesal size of 1/4", so any router that has a collet of 1/4", these should work just fine. I have three different routers. Two Ridgid and one Porter Cable, and these bits have worked in every single one.

I wouldn't recommend it. These are designed for wood.

Can you use this in any drills

Asked by: Chris
Technically, you can, if the chuck fits, but I would not use these in a drill. The bits only have two cutters and with the low speed / high torque of a drill, you will get massive tear-outs and might even hurt yourself if an edge catches and you get a blowback. They're meant for use in a higher speed router, some of the bits preferably with a router table and jig or a sturdy template. Safety first!

Can the trim bits be used to trim countertop laminate?

Can the trim bits be used to trim countertop laminate?
Asked by: energized4life
There's a single flush cut straight router bit in the set -- that's the one you would use for trimming laminate. I answered a similar question her back in June, but I'll copy that in here for convenience. First -- I'd suggest that you search out the topic on YouTube and watch a few videos to get a feel for the job, e.g., search for keywords Router, Laminate, Trim, Countertop. My answer from June: I used the router to cut / trim a Corian (solid surface) counter top. Laminate is actually easier to work with than solid surface. You'll want to be sure to use a bit that's appropriate, work slowly and let the tool to the work - don't push it so hard that the laminate fractures or the router slows down. Also - be sure that you have your work secured properly. A "flush trim" bit would be appropriate -- and you can find ones specifically made to tackle the job you have in mind. Some basics to keep in mind: Make sure the counter (I'm assuming that's what you're working on) is clean and clear of debris. Make sure the router base plate is clean as well. The router's base must move smoothly across the top of the laminate to maintain a straight edge. It's a good idea to put a single layer of masking tape on the surface of the laminate along the router's path to prevent the router's base from scratching the laminate as you trim the edge. Take the battery out of the router, and insert your flush-cut bit. It's generally recommended to use a straight bit for the bottom lip of the counter. Using a bevel bit for the top edge where the laminate pieces for the face and top join will reduce the risk of edge chipping on the finished counter top and yield a true professional result. Adjust the cutting depth on the router so the top of the bit's guide bearing is 1/16 inch below the bottom edge of the laminate surface you are trimming. As long at the counter edge itself is straight and clean, this will make it simple to get a perfectly aligned laminate edge. If at all possible, see if you can find a section to practice on, if only for a couple of short cuts. This way you'll get the feel of the tool and job set up before attacking what will become your final piece.

I was hesitant at first, especially after reading all the reviews about people snapping bits, but I have found that as long as I am not forcing the router through the wood, and I let the bits do the cutting (not the elbow grease), these bits should last me a long time. I have many different bits in addition to these, some of which are almost $100 a piece, but these are the go to bits I use for almost everything. The case is compact, durable, and easy to throw in a bag for wherever I am using my router. I have a Ridgid cordless router as well, and I keep the adjustment wrench tucked inside this case so that when I need to change a bit, the wrench is right there. Very convenient. Great price for a great assortment of router bits. Keep them clean, and take multiple passes through your workpiece, and they should last you a very long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 stars, not a problem at all I use these bits as much as i use the toilet. they are sharp, & cut through soft aswell as hardwood beautifully. i read some of the other reviews on this product & see that they're snapping bits. if your making dado cuts with the router, go 4 passes per quarter inch, take off a 16th of an inch at a time. if your looking for fast dado's, open your wallet & buy a dado stack for your tablesaw, if not, take your time & do it the right way & these bits will do exactly what they are designed to do without any problems.

Only two of the bits are really useful for decorative molding (picture frames, box edges and similar), and both of them are on the small side. The chamfer bits are fairly small too, and the generic router bits on the short side too. Overall, this is suitable for wood no thicker than 1/4"; perhaps 3/8" or 1/2" for some of the bits. Fair enough; it's just not advertised as such. I guess "For all your projects" is true if all your projects are fairly small, but don't expect this to handle tabletops or big frames or 1/2" mitres. Again, fair enough. But the main problem with this set was that the bits were not very sharp, and required sharpening out of the box. Before sharpening, they caused tearouts and ruined wood here. After sharpening, they work just fine, and there are lots of bits for the money, which is why I give as much as three stars.

As far as starter sets go, these are as very decent for the money and will get the job done. Plenty sharp, bearings aren't bad and glide well enough, and overall worth purchasing. Will they last you a lifetime? No. But by the time the ones that do wear out on you, you would've gotten way more than $4 worth on that bit. Those are the ones I'd recommend you replace with higher end ones. For those bad reviews on the bits snapping. Look guys, its 1/4" shank. You gotta make multiple passes, 1/16 to 1/8 (max) at a time. Have patience with it, take the time to set and plan..etc and they will perform well. You can snap a $30 bit just the same if you're forcing them too much, maybe will outlast these but not a whole lot longer.

Even though it does not cost much, the quality is quite good. I have used only one of the bits. It works flawlessly. The material is hard and durable. I even accidentally cut into some nails and the cutting edge was still sharp. I was very impressed. If you buy them individually you may have to pay 5 times more.

I just bought my first portable router and am learning how to properly use it. This set included a variety of bits and the price was great. I cannot comment on the quality yet since I have just started using them. I do believe that you get what you pay for, but for the money this sure seemed like a good start-up set for someone learning the ropes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great product for the price I bought this to get through a project i was working on and was very impressed with how good of a job it did. I was concerned before i bought them that they wouldn’t last through the project but they did and i have the rest of the set for the cost of one or two bits if i biught them individually.

This router bit set along with the cordless palm router are my first tools venturing into routing woodwork. So far, I have used both tools and have let me do some amateur Projects as gifts for some people. No issues with the router bit set, it seems to do what they are intended for.
