A:  Hi Lenard - We apologize for your experience. Customer satisfaction is very important to Scepter. Please contact our Customer Service team at 1-800-387-6018 or email customerservice@scepter.com so that we can resolve this for you. Similar to medication packaging, gas/diesel cans must also adhere to strict child resistance packaging laws. All fuel containers sold in the United States must come equipped with a child-safety lock and adhere to environmental regulations (EPA). Unfortunately, the dark green tab is part of the child safety lock mechanism and cannot be fixed to remain open. This product should only be used with the spout it came with at the time of purchase. Every automobile/equipment is different, so it is not a one size fits all situation. The SMARTCONTROL gas can, is designed to be used with your palm. Step 1: Vent the fuel can by slowly unscrewing the cap, allow all the pressure to escape. Once vented re-tighten cap. You may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. Step 2: Flip up dark lever on back of spout with your palm. Step 3: With the dark green lever still flipped up, push the entire light green pad forward. It will be stiff as that is part of the child resistant feature. Again, you may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. Step 4: Tilt can and pour. This can has a flow rate of 3+ gallons per minute when actuated fully. The “screen” you see in the neck of the fuel can is actually a safety device called a flame mitigation device (FMD). Its inclusion in fuel containers is part of a 2020 U.S. law to improve overall safety. It does not make it safe to mix Gas and Fire, which remains extremely dangerous, but helps to protect the consumer against situations of potential misuse. Do not ever remove or modify the FMD. We understand that filling the containers now requires the user to learn to rest the pump in the center of the FMD, on the steps, to fill at full speed. The spout has a channel for venting when pouring. You can also choose simply to take your time filling the container. We have posted both fill and pour instructions online at https://www.scepter.com/safety/instructional-videos/ which should help. We are here to help!

              Leaks
I will never buy another Scepter gas can. It has leaked since I got it. Today was the last straw as I tried to re-seat the gasket on the Smart Control spout. Terrible design and huge waste of time and to boot--gas all over.

                  Secure
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The 1 Gallon SmartControl Gasoline Container Scepter® SmartControl™ is a nice secure gas can. I like that it is secure from spills and some types of fires. It does take a little to get use to using, but once you get the hang of it, it is not a problem. I like the built in FMD (fuel mitigation device) it is nice for holding the gas pump in a steady position. Unlike the old type of cans that you have to just kind of hold it in place and hope you don’t spill it. It has a good locking cap, to keep it secure and to keep kids from opening it. It also has a cap over the spout to keep residual gas from dripping out.

You need it even if you think you don't!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I never thought I would need this 1 Gallon SmartControl Gasoline Container but I was happily proven wrong. Super easy to use. There are no worries about leaks or pouring out if I have to transport it with me

                      Perfect for small equipment
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Best little gas can money can buy. No fumes to worry about with the extra safety features. Very easy to use and no over spillage like others. Functionally the handle/pump set up is but nicer and more updated then any I've seen. If your looking for an upgrade, this is the way to go.

Easy to transport due to the size and childproof
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like how this small new gas can of mine has a child safety lock on it. My others don’t I have to store up high on a shelf outside so my young child doesn’t get into it. It can leak and noticed it desk repeatedly until I noticed I didn’t scream the cap down tight and securely then this should not leak for you. Only thing I would love for future improvements would be a longer hose due to it being difficult to get the gas into the mower.

                          Handy gallon gas can
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This gallon gas can is pretty easy to use after you learn how the vent works. It’s better for the environment and helps stops spills and leaks better than older gas cans. I like the small gallon gas cans for using in our string trimmer or atv. The gallon can is easily to handle and not to heavy. I tend to have better controls and less spills.

Gov't regulations make this difficult to use
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This complicated gas can must have been designed to comply with newer government regulations. It claims to be child-safe, which is a good thing, but it's hard for an adult to use. I had to watch the manufacturer's online video to figure out how to use it. To start the flow, you push a black lever and green block forward. It's difficult to hold when it's full and you are both pressing a tab and pushing a block forward to start the flow. A third hand would be helpful!

                              Leak, leak, leak
Bought this today. I'm pretty sure I would be able to use the trigger and handle on the can, if it would stop leaking for five seconds. Looks like there's a white gasket that isn't seated anywhere. It would really be helpful for Scepter's site to have a picture of the inside of the spout to show us what it's supposed to look like.

                                Safety First
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought the Scepter SmartControl Fuel Can about a month ago while shopping! I saw it and stopped in my tracks to check it out! It has great safety features like a lock that you have to unlock before you use it, a vent that you have to vent before you fill it with it with fuel and also a lock on the nozzle you have to unlock before you can even take the nozzle off of the can to fill it with your preferred fuel! It also is easier to pour into a gas tank like your car or lawn mower than your regular gas can is so that you do not waste any fuel what so ever, and best of all it is very child proof!Great Product! Great Company! I will be purchasing more cans in the near future!
