The RTC2Z Rigid Tie corner connector connects a 2x2, 2x3 or 2x4 vertical member to two 2x3 or greater horizontal members, forming a 90-degree corner.

Q:If I want to use the Rtz42 ties so I can have 4x4 legs will the length or width dimensions of the 2 x 4 lumber change? I?m going off a set of plans but they are designed for the 2x4 brackets.

A: Hello Charlie, this is McKenzie with Simpson Strong-Tie. The RTC42 is sized for a nominal 4x4 post (3.5") and nominal 2x joists or beams (1.5"). The link in your ask, is the RTC2Z sized for nominal 2x4 post and 2x joists.

A: If you use 5/8" plywood for shelving there shouldn't be a problem unless you are storing massive lead lined objects. This is a stout set up. Although the directions don't say it, you can place a reinforcing 2x4 under the middle of the shelves.

A: Yes, they are galvanized sheet metal. I would do a self etching primer first before finished paint

A: I recently used a primer on the metal beforeI painted with a latex paint. I will know as time goes on how durable it is.

Smart, simple solution for shelving

Easy to use for strong shelving. I used 2x2's vertical and 2x3's horizontal and works great. 2x4 probably overkill for most applications.

Piece mealed this bench together from the plans i downloaded on simpsons website. My home depot didnt have the kit in stock. About 140 bucks in materials. Very sturdy!

Good brackets

Nice brackets, though expensive. You can buy them in workbench kit of 8 with screws included, and that is what I recommend over buying them singly. It is cheaper that way. I used mine to build an aquarium stand (see picture). These are galvanized, so if you paint them you can't use most spray paint without a special primer. I used acrylic latex paint, which is supposed to work with galvinized metal. It took about 3-4 coats.
