This machine replaces an 8 yr old Kenmore that I looks like it was also built by Singer. Neither machine requires lubrication (sealed bearings ?) but will eventually slow down and seize and require a repairman that will cost more than a new machine so throw out the old and bring on the new. My wife really likes everything about this Singer and it has so far worked perfectly. I strongly recommend this model especially since it has a more powerful motor. ...Read More Read Less

Customer Reviews

23-Stitch Sewing Machine is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 158.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from 4423 Heavy Duty I replaced an old Touch and Sew with this machine. I sew tents, dog harnesses, collars, leashes, chest packs, and other outdoor equipment and also do modifications on existing hiking/backpacking products. I am about to start a major new tent project and have been working on smaller projects to get a hand on using the machine before I run a bunch of fabric through it. So far seems like a great little machine. It is racing car fast and the stitches of its straight stitch line up perfectly. I tried using the button foot to mend a couple of shirts missing buttons and had a bit of difficulty. The thread on the bobbin side kept bunching up making huge thread clumps. This is the same manifestation that caused me to get rid of my old machine. Obviously it is something I am doing. But I don't know what. If you read this review and know the answer please see if you can respond. I would really appreciate it. In the mean time I will ask customer service then I can write a review on their response.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love at First Stitch I've only had this machine three days and I am absolutely in love with it! After testing it out and seeing what it could do, I brought my blanket to it and attached Velcro where a snap had fallen off. This was a rather thick blanket and with a size 18 needle, the blanket present no problem for the machine. Not even the slightest hesitation. I went on to construct two very lightweight knit bicycle pants (used a size 12 needle this time) and zip! they were done. This machine is quiet and fast. It handles both extremes in fabric thicknesses and handled very stretchy knits quite well, no snagging and no pulling or drawing it down into the needle plate. I'm an experienced sewist and quite familiar with fabric handling techniques, even so, some of the thinner, more stretchy fabrics will sometimes pull or snag even with my best efforts at control. I have some canvas shorts and bags to sew up soon and I am looking forward to how it handles those fabrics. But, right now I absolutely love the machine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from To oil of not to oil? To oil or not to oil? That seems to be the question - which nobody answers. Why not write replies to the reviews? Would that not be of more value than just publishing reviews? Yes, the machine is rather noisy, which is okay if one doesn't worry about it and keep wondering if it should not be oiled? Like so many reviewers I myself also have a 60/70 year old Singer, still in working order and would like to beat that record. So, if it needs oiling, like sewing machines usually do, I would like to know about it. Also wish there were a thing-y with which the empty bobbin can be lifted from the bobbin case when it is time to change the bobbin. And ah! Threading the needle ... if only, if only I could manage that! But I have a notion the problem here lies with me, not with the machine, but with me not properly knowing how to do it. Love the speed, love the heavy duty, love the fancy stitches, love the machine as a whole. Especially as it was a gift from my son - I can feel the love every time I use it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Singer 4423-Best Home Machine I've Used I'm age 75 and worked in a factory sewing pants for the military. I purchased the Singer 4423 from Amazon, as it appeared to be the fastest home sewing machine I could afford to buy. I received it September 10th, but didn't get the chance to really check it out until the 13th. I used a yard of tapestry material I had in a storage box. This material was not yet stiffened and blocked. I put this machine through a rigorous test on all the stitches, running it at the fastest speed. It sewed perfectly, never slipped a stitch, never bird-nested the thread or broke the thread. EVERY feature on this machine worked just like it is advertised. After testing the stitches, I folded the fabric over and over to create 16 layers. It sewed through that thickness like it was 1 layer of light weight cotton. At my age, I really LOVE the top bobbin position AND the needle threader. Thank you Singer for these great features and a machine that most people can afford to buy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for the price I bought this when I saw the word 'Heavy Duty'. So, as soon as I got home I had to check it out. I was amazed how it took really thick layers and sewed with ease. I used thin material and tested it out too. It served my purpose really well, without any sqeek or sqeel. So far so good. Actually so far excellent. I wish singer would come up with a sturdy and convenient to use cover for its machines. Also, I have not found out how to clean this machine (especially when it gets too much lint). I owned a Kenmore for almost 40 years. It is a great machine and I can open up its sides and bottom (no screw drivers needed) to get to the moving parts and clean them occasionally. But this one I can't do it. There is also no indication if I need to oil this machine and where to pour the oil. If anyone can help me with this I appreciate it. I would like to maintain this machine for another 40 years; just like my Kenmore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great machine for little money! Couldn't be more pleased with this 4423. It's my my workhorse--handles everything. Bought it to have for the heavy jobs and also to have as a 2nd machine for when I'm sewing something which requires thread color changes often. This machines handles it all with ease and power. When I got it I took a strip of denim and folded layers in here and there to see how it would sew. This machine sewed down the strip up and over the humps like butter and without a vibration either. I was impressed as I had 14 layers in the little lumps. This would be a good starter machine for a beginner or to have as a 2nd machine for the heavy sewing. It does an equally nice job on sheer fabrics too. I am very happy with this machine! Just remember to use the correct size needle for the sewing job you're doing and you won't have any problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Singer 4423 Heavy Duty I unpacked the 4423, set it up and went right to work. The sewing is very precise, easy to thread, load the bobbin. I have other machines that are all computerized, this machine give you the sewer the ability of manually controlling all aspects of the machine. I have really enjoyed sitting and learning all the different stitches, needle positions, that this machine can do. I was looking for a non-computerized machine and this really has lived up to what it says it can do. I put 12 layers of heavy denim together and used a denim needle with yellow jean thread and it just breezed right through it no problem. I also used a VERY delicate fabric and the tenderness and ease and stitching was just as perfect as the heavy material. I really give this machine 5 stars because it is truly and fun and well built and accurate machine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy I do basic rather simple sewing. I find this machine significantly more powerful, and significantly more controllable; and that is a very good combination. I believe what they say when they it is a workhorse that will last a long time. I also enjoy the 23 stitches; and for the sewing I now do I think they will be quite adequate. I prefer handling metal bobbins and think it would be an improvement if they could design this same kind of bobbin operation, only use metal bobbins. Metal bobbins do have holes in them so you can see how much thread is left. My last sewing machine also has a strong metal case, but not as strong a motor. And this much newer machine has new generations of making sewing easier. I think it is a good investment I couldn't resist.
